I've met Gene twice. Very cordial guy. He knows who he is. He's confident and sure. But he's cool enough to say hi and chit chat for a sec, which is more than I can say for an awful lot of people.
I met him, he was incredibly nice to me, gracious, and humble.
I first heard Van Halen on WABX radio when Gene Simmons was guest DJ for two hours. He talked about this great new group named after two brotherswho were going to release an album soon. He played Running With The Devil demo. I thought it was great. Gene pushed and promoted the band when nobody was listening. Van Halen couldn’t get arrested with a gun for a long time. We can literally thank Gene for a big part of the bands emergence.
That was 45 years ago though. He’s run his mouth off a bit since then.

They were playing the Whiskey A Go Go on the Sunset Strip not in somebody's garage in the San Fernando Valley. Gene didn't see an up and coming band that needed a helping hand. He saw dollar signs and figured he could get his hands on some of them.

The thing that got Van Halen signed to Warner Bros wasn't the demos VH made with Gene, it was the VH LIVE PERFORMANCES because by 1977 they could draw 6 to 7 thousand people in the LA area just by word of mouth & fliers......Plus the head of Kiss' record company Casablanca heard the VH Gene Demos & wasn't interested in VH .....How stupid was he ? ....Biggest idiotic decision since that guy who turned down the Beatles.
Having said that, Gene was clearly well intentioned .
And Warner Bros, only told Gene they weren't interested because they just wanted him out of the picture. They didn't want him asking for a finder's fee. They wanted to sign Van Halen on their own. So they waited for a while to not make it look obvious, then signed Van Halen.
I read what Gene said, there's no way to squirm out of that. Roth doesn't have vocal aids, Paul Stanley does. Past his prime? My ass, Paul is just as past his prime. So now we get stuck with a painter as an opener. Nobody wants that. Nobody.
I am so happy to hear Gene say he did not mean it the way it came out. I think that was pretty big of him to apologize to David Lee.

That's not quite accurate. It was Ted Templeton that wanted to replace Roth before the 1st album. However, from what I can remember, Dave's lyrics, work ethic, and attitude finally won him over.

I have met a lot of celebrities given the nature of my job. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were two of the nicest gentlemen I have ever dealt with. It was truly a pleasure to meet them.

I have been a VH(DLR) fan since 78 and saw them in concert several times 81, 83 US Festival and in 2015. The last concert was really rather sad DLR couldn't even sing alot of the songs. In his prime DLR was the best frontman in the world!!! But those days are long since pasted. Gene was brutal in his honesty but it is the truth. The same can be said of Paul Stanley.

Gene is right about Dave. In the rock and roll world no one ever became as big as David Lee Roth in front of Van Halen. Not Plant, Mick. I sincerely hopes that this brings this matter to resolution , and that peace and good will is re-established between them. After watching DLR's retirement announcement, I can't help feeling that he sincerely believes that he is going to be joining his band mate Eddie Van Halen sooner rather than later. This scares me - people who believe that have an awful tendency to bring forward their passing - it is like the heart and will gives up, and their body and soul departs soon afterwards. As much as I and his many fans and admirers around the world sincerely do not want that to happen - none of us knows how much time we have. Life is too short to spend on petty BS. As John Edward says - make sure that you communicate with, appreciate and validate the people you love in the here and now, so that you are not needing a medium to tell someone that you love them later!.

The VH Live performances were the reason they go recognized and signed. That said, I agree that DLR and VH's best days are behind them, but so are Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and the rest of the KISS band.
According to Greg Renoff's "Van Halen Rising", what Simmons was actually interested in was Eddie and the whole demo ruse was an attempt to snag him from the band. It is stated that it's actually Eddie playing on Love Gun's "Christine Sixteen" which Simmons had him demo and it was forevermore copied by Frehley lick for lick.
