The people in the end credits and those who participated are Hawaiian activists/advocates who helped us retain/rediscover our identity as Hawaiians after our culture and language was banned following the overthrow and "annexation". They probably would not appreciate being called American. The whole thing about Hawaiʻi is that it's not legitimately apart of America and America knows this (Public Law 103-150). The annexation ballot was invalid bc it did not give Native Hawaiians the choice for sovereignty, AND Americans, Europeans, and the immigrants could vote. Therefore, Native Hawaiians never gave themselves up to America. Yet still here we are, occupied illegally, commercialized as a "luxury paradise playground". This song demonstrates the burdens of being Hawaiian following the overthrow and "annexation", the prohibition placed on our cultural practices and language, and recovering the missing pieces of ourselves. This song demonstrates the bond we have as a people, even across the islands or across the oceans, and how we will come together and support one another. Lastly, the eternal fighting spirit of Hawaiians. Our people have always been ride or die for our chiefs, we will always ride or die for our kingdom if for nothing else but to take care of our home so that it may take care of our keiki for many, many generations to come. It’s the same exact thing the Americans did in Hawaii, of non natives having more say to the land than its original inhabitants and it’s still happening till this day. The Kanaky people of New Caledonia, the Indigenous of West Papua, the Māori of Aotearoa , the Kanaka Maoli of Hawaii all scream freedom. We may be small islands, but we are the caretakers of the greatest ocean in the world. A droplet may be small, but its ripples are great. We are all small droplets of this great ocean, God willing let the power flow back to its rightful owners. Allow the Moana (ocean) to heal alongside its caretakers. Because while the rest of the world pollutes the oceans and contribute to climate change, it is our people who suffer. Mahalo and aloha to all who continues to speak up against this injustice.
