    One thing I just learned from a southern CA consulate re: permanent residency visa requirements. By phone they let me know that even if I'm showing proof of solvency with savings/investments statements, I still also need to show that I am retired by showing social security benefit letters. Anyone thinking about applying for temporary residency should seriously consider applying now if they qualify, whether or not they plan on moving to Mexico soon. If most consulates still continue using MW (Daily minimum wage) the increase in Jan. 2023, given this years inflation, will be huge. Last year the MW increased 22% with 5.69% inflation in Mexico. The MW in 2016 was $73.04 mxn and with an average exchange rate of 18.69 mxn to 1 usd and it only took $1172 usd to qualify. In 2023, even if the MW is only increased 16% (likely higher) from 2022, it will take over $3000 usd to qualify.

      @@carolalex12345 For the most part, the financial solvency requirements are on auto-pilot. If the MW (Daily minimum wage in Mexico City) increases, the $ amount required to qualify also increases because most of the consulates use the standard formula.

    There’s a page on the Mexico Relocation Guide that lists various cities’ consulates, and the financial requirements for each. Strangely, although McAllen has the lowest rate for monthly income ($1700), it has one of the highest for savings/investments ($43,217) only one dollar less than Denver ($43,218)!
    I can’t post a link, as UA-cam won’t allow links in comments, but you can possibly find the list by going to Mexico Relocation Guide’s home page going from there.

    • @WiseOwl-1
      @WiseOwl-1 2 роки тому

      The standard formula for savings is 5000x the MW (daily minimum wage) of $172.87 mxn. $43,217 usd x 20 (ballpark exchange rate) = $864,340 mxn. 864,340 / 172.87 = 5,000 (rounded) days of MW required.

    • @carolalex12345
      @carolalex12345 2 роки тому +1

      @@WiseOwl-1 Yes, I know that - but that's not the point I was making. What I'm saying is that McAllen's monthly income rate is an anomaly. Paul's video gave examples of three of the lowest rates for monthly income, of which McAllen was the lowest. However, in the link I read, from the Mexico Relocation Guide, there's a discrepancy. McAllen doesn't work out as the lowest rate if you go by savings or investments. It's no different to Denver, or Las Vegas, or Saint Paul, and is actually MORE than the rate for Houston, Austin, San Diego, Los Angeles, Detroit, New Orleans and Portland.
      So, bottom line - McAllen is the lowest if you're using your income as your criteria, NOT your savings. I don't know why there's a discrepancy, but that's what's on the page I read.
      I wish I could post the link, but UA-cam doesn't allow links in comments.

    • @WiseOwl-1
      @WiseOwl-1 2 роки тому

      @@carolalex12345 Contact the consulate (by email) and ask of the consulates that I've looked at have old information. For McAllen, they seem to be using 200 x MW for monthly net income and the standard 5000 x MW for savings and investments. If I had to guess, I'd say that the requirements for savings/investments use the standard formula because those are often (in the case of 401k or equities investments) "gross" before tax amounts as opposed to the "net" after tax monthly income requirements.

    Hi Paul, just thought I would give a little info as to what happened to me using Raleigh. I live in Jupiter Fl and based on their web site I elected to use theirs since I had family up there, so I figured I would take a long weekend and visit at the same time. I'm retired military and my net pay is north of 2700, and according to the site temp residency was 1650 and permanent was 2700. I decided to try to get permanent, but the technician processing my took my pay stubs and bank statements which were in order, she went to the back room and returned telling me I didn't make enough for permanent; it turns out she broke out a calculator and used 127 peso time 300/500 and an exchange rate of 19 peso's. Long story short I did get the temp sticker, but not the permanent I hoped for. I guess the moral to the story is be ready for anything, even when they confirm to you in an email the site is current.

    **Anyone here had to deal with the BS mentioned below?
    Please comment to let others know.** :
    OK I have watched all of Paul's videos, I am canadian and have looked through all the mexican consulates available here plus the ones in USA just to get a feel of how bad they are.....
    Here there is only 3 I could go to (two which are too far from where I live, so it leaves me with one in Montreal where the reviews leaves little hope to receive any help at all, not even a simple appointment.....)
    And while I read countless bad reviews from people that got treated like utter s**t by the so-called employees ''working'' there, I kept fuming inside, wondering WHY the F the canadian/USA government won't (or can't) close these down!?
    There are SO MANY complaints, yet these consulate remain open for years and years, taking our money and ruining the view people have about mexico/mexicans.....
    Can nothing be done? It is utterly, truly upsetting to see so many people go through this, over and over.
    Can't we trust anyone at all?
    It's like the mexican bureaucratic BS and all the lies moved to USA/Canada.
    USA/Canadian citizens AND foreigners are abandoned to these corrupted consulates....
    I just want to go there myself and punch these employees in the face, they are getting paid well I assume and yet they don't do anything except warm seats and laugh in your face, never answer phone calls/emails and hung up on you.
    People try for months, every day: to get an appointment. Meanwhile their IDs expire, they waste money and time off work etc.
    This angers me so much. (I very much love your brain Paul because it mirrors my own, and I will truly need to learn to not be so bothered by lack of justice if I want to go live in mexico: because like you say, its chaotic ''laws'' are a massive pain. Their lack of logic is infuriating. WHY complicate things so much. Even dealing with spouse sponsorship here was child's play compared to what I'll face from mex.....)

I've been in cancun for almost 2 years now but the tourist strip in PDC is more or less a long walk rather than bussing around like in the resort section / zone in cancun... Something I haven't put much thought into until now

    Hi Paul, I came to Mexico during Covid 7 months ago from Bali. I couldn’t get a Mexican visa unless I went to Jakarta first. Problem was I couldn’t get back to Bali without a 2 week isolation stay in Jakarta. I hired a visa agent last month, here in Mexico. He said he could renew my visa without me leaving Mexico. He took me to Campeche to renew.. I received a temporary paper saying the paperwork was being done. I paid the agent, in full. I never got the visa. The agent won’t return my calls. Any suggestions as to the next step? I’m 81 years old and it is difficult for me to travel at this time. To say that I’m frustrated and angry is putting it mildly. Thanks for any advise you may have for me.

    • @qroo
      @qroo  2 роки тому +1

      I am suspicious because there is not supposed to be a way to extend the tourist visa within Mexico. One option can be to apply for temporary residency as part of a type of amnesty program. Perhaps that is what the "visa agent" is doing for you. If he or she was, you would have signed several documents. Since the agent set up everything for you, there is no way for you to check online yourself. You would have to go to an INM office and have them check the status of your case.

      No, it does not count toward your investment total; however, another way to qualify for temporary residency is by owning real estate in Mexico valued at a certain amount. That amount also varies by consulate. The Houston Consulate sets the value at $258,950 or higher.

      Yes, you can go to Mexican consulates in countries other than your own. One additional requirement is that you will have to show that you are lawfully in that country. Another thing to consider is that consulates provide services in Spanish and the recognized dominant language of the country they are located in. If you go to a Latin American location, there may or may not be someone who can process your application in English.

    • @qroo

      Some consulates only process applications from people who reside in a certain geographic area; however, you should be able to go to a Mexican Consulate in the U.S. as a Canadian citizen. On several of their sites, the only reference to non-U.S. citizens applying is that they would be also be required to show that they are lawfully in the U.S. at the time of applying.

    • @carolalex12345

      @@qroo Thanks! I was prompted to ask my question, having looked at the Raleigh page, as it was one of the 'cheaper' ones you mentioned. For non-US citizens, it states: "If not a US citizen, a Green Card (officially known as a Permanent Resident Card) or other proof of legal residence (e.g. parole, extension of permit, etc.)". It seems to require actual residence in the US, which would disqualify most Canadians, so I was wondering if that was common to all consulates. I'll do more research, but thanks, anyway.

    Beware of bargains, especially while shopping online. Low numbers could mean a consulate really applies lower solvency requirements, or it could just mean that no one has bothered to update their web site in years. In Raleigh's case, the latter. Conversely, Houston and San Diego may not be higher than anyone else, just better about keeping their web site up to date.
    I went to the Raleigh consulate without an appointment on 12/29/21, because their poorly maintained site said you needed none (and in fact, couldn't get one) for residency visas. They set up an appointment for 1/30/22, and told me to come back with proof of either monthly savings / investments of 5,000 x MXN $141.70 = MXN $708,500 --> USD $34,409.907 or monthly net take home pay of 300 x MXN $141.70 = MXN $42,510 ---> USD $2,064.594 (which I had), plus bank statements for the same period to show I actually received my monthly net income (which it never would have occurred to me to bring). Both the $34,491 monthly savings and $2,064.59 net income figures were based on Mexico's minimum wage in 2021, so it was technically correct advice the day it was given to me but not for the day they were setting me up to come back. I qualify under either so I honestly don't know whether they applied 2021 or 2022 minimum wage in my case, but I'm quite sure they did NOT apply the 2019 (?) standard that would have landed at $1,650.
    One nice thing about Raleigh, though: they wouldn't take my application fee until after they had reviewed and approved it.
