    Thanks, I really enjoyed seeing how you make your projects and loved how they came out. I have made a few using luan and I know they don't last but for a couple of years but they are light and easy to store. Then I change my mind about what I want to make next time and it wasn't that expensive. A lot cheaper than buying them already made. Now the luan is twice as expensive but sometimes it's just worth it to see something you made and that can be enjoyed by others too. I always take pictures so I can remember years later what I accomplished. Love seeing others talents and I learn so much from them!

    Great video’s ‼️ I’ve learned a lot about the process involved in making yard art! Just wondering what shade of paint do you use for the skin tone?

      Thanks for the kind words! Actually, I went to the paint store and picked a swatch that seemed to match my skin tone. That turned out to be too light after I painted one character. I added some brown and a touch of red to it in order to darken it up a little bit. I know that doesn't help you... but I really have no clue as to what the color is now after adding in the additional colors. It ended up being a trial and error color.

    Great videos, thank you! I've been making wood yard art and am contemplating working with plastic. You use exterior latex paint - how do you buy that (what quantities) so that you have all the colors you need? working with acrylics, i'm used to mixing my own colors using only the primaries...what's the smallest amount of exterior latex that you can buy?

      Hi Brenda... thank you for the compliment! I purchase FLAT exterior latex paint in quart sizes (I think that's the smallest size available) at the big blue box store. I have also purchased from the big orange box store as well... but the blue is closer. I ALWAYS ask for the cheapest available and have NEVER had an issue with going that route. I do the EXACT same thing as you as far as mixing paint colors. I just think that's the smartest route to go! I started out by purchasing the primary colors along with black and brown. Those colors allowed me to mix up just about any other color I might need. I'll admit... if I'm making a project that takes a LOT of a certain color... I'll just run to the store and buy a quart of that exact color rather than mixing it. I always keep my empty plastic jars (usually peanut butter jars) and use them for mixing up my paint colors. They seal tightly and you can see the color through the clear plastic. I've kept paint for several years in those containers. And you might as well get a gallon of white exterior latex primer/paint for the base coat on the Coroplast... you can also use that same white paint for the design. And the number ONE rule is MAKE SURE you clean the Coroplast with Naptha or paint thinner or some sort of de-greaser... VERY IMPORTANT!!! If I were you... I'd actually do an experiment with the coroplast and your current paint supply. Clean the Coro... give it a coat of the white primer/paint and then cut off a small piece and use your current paint to paint a bunch of different color swatches on that piece. Let it sit out in the sun and (more importantly) the rain and see how it does! It COULD be that you don't have to make a big investment in new paints... you MIGHT be able to use what you have!!!! Sure wouldn't hurt anything to give it a try and possibly save some money! Good luck with your project... I'd enjoy getting to see what you've made in the past and create in the future!

    Can we use acrylic paints?

    • @jrbryant0136

      Good morning Dee's DIYs! I've never tried using acrylic paints so I did a search to learn more about it. After reading, I don't think I'd advise using acrylic paints outdoors. My guess would be that if you're making characters to use INDOORS then acrylic paint might work. But if you plan on using them outdoors, then I'd suggest not using it.

      @@jrbryant0136 Following along the same line. The stores by me have a limited selection of Exterior Latex Flat paint unless you buy it by the gallon which would add up with the numerous colors. If you were to use Exterior, Flat, White Primer for the base would Satin sheen work for the colors as there is a much larger selection in smaller sizes?

      @@andrewc8114 Hey Andrew... good question! I think that a satin sheen finish would adhere just as well as flat. The only issue I have with NOT using a flat finish is that the floodlight you will use, to light your characters at night, will reflect the light quite a bit more with each level of "shinier" sheen you go with. I made the mistake of using glossy paint, on the first character I ever made, and when I turned the floodlight on, (the night I finished painting it) all I saw was a hot mess of light reflected back at me. So I had to purchase new paint and the repaint the entire character. I don't think that a satin finish would be too bad at all as far as reflecting light would go. I would suggest that you purchase a single pint of the satin finish (or if you already have a pint at home) and paint a piece of scrap board with it. Maybe even paint half of the board with your flat white exterior latex and the other half with the satin finish for comparison. When it gets dark, turn your floodlight on it and see how reflective the light is on the satin paint. I'd give it a test before investing in a bunch of different colors. And remember... you can create your own colors (and save money) by mixing primary colors and possibly adding white or black. Hope this helps! And... I ALWAYS enjoy seeing pictures of what people create!!!

    Do you seal the entire piece with anything, once it’s finished?

    • @makeitfunMonkey
      @makeitfunMonkey  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Kevin - No, I don't seal the piece after I've finished painting it. The paint has lasted quite well on all my pieces over the years unless I accidentally scrape it against something. The paint CAN be scratched off... but I've found that to be the case with using Masonite (hard board) as well. Just be careful with your pieces and you should be fine! BTW... if you make some characters, I'd really enjoy getting to see what you make. Thanks for watching and I hope you have fun creating!
