  • Anyone can grow this, no garden required! This superfood is SUPER easy to grow, right in your home. This is NOT Fool's Watercress, Apium nodiflorum (synonym Helosciadium nodiflorum) nor is it Garden Cress, Cress (Lepidium sativum). You can find those on other gardening channels. I'll show you how to grow true Watrecress in water! I LOVE baby watercress and I am sure you will too! It is tender, delicate and has a bit of a sweet pepper flavor when it is young. You will be able to reap the full nutritional reward of this little plant when you can grow it yourself and eat it right after harvest!

    I am using my DIY Grow System for this plant. If you are purchasing lights, then remember, wattage measures energy usage and lumens measures brightness of light. You can have a very low wattage bulb with very bright light. You will find the lowest watt/high lumens in the LED lights.

    Donna, I just love your videos! You do such a wonderful job in documenting gardening from seeding to eating. Last year you inspired me to start an indoor hydroponics system. I was successfully able to grow romaine lettuce during the winter. I love watercress and I am going to grow it using your method. Thanks Donna!

    I'm late but I want to thank you for all of this wonderful information! I've been trying to grow watercress for a couple months now and they just never really made it past the tiny sprout stage. I couldn't figure out why, but your explanations made me realize that I'm giving them too much dirt and not enough room to grow! Thankfully I still have a bunch of seeds left, and your examples look simple to set up and easy to follow. Now I know what I'm going to try next :)
    Hopefully using just water without nutrient solution is okay? I'm growing it for my bearded dragon, not necessarily for myself, so I'm leaning on the side of caution when it comes to using nutrients just in case it might upset his system.

    I grow it in my fish tank. I have one that's like 9in tall so far. finally broke the water surface today :D. they love lots of water and any natural pond, brook water will work great. i find it growing in the brook by my house in Connecticut. idk where you are but if you can find it in the wild around you dig some up but be care full not to mess up the roots and use the water its in to grow it. i think usually any pond or brook water will suffice.

      @RainbowGardens  7 років тому +5

      Thanks Chuck! How acidic is coco coir and does it change the pH? Also, the Sunleaves (rocks) are very porous so they add the air pockets I need since I am not using an air pump and do so manually.

      Coco coir has a near perfect natural pH level of 5.2-6.3 (for growing plants). Check it out for 10 bucks at Petco. In the reptile section. The 3 bricks will make a bunch of media. You will be surprised at how well it performs!
      Chuck

    • @RainbowGardens

      Hi! I tried coco coir in my square foot garden about 4 years ago and they worked great. ua-cam.com/video/v_-HvGVFY1E/v-deo.html I am sure I could not use them as the main media because I really need the porosity, but perhaps I will experiment for the starts. Thanks!

    • @FensterfarmGreenhouse
      @FensterfarmGreenhouse 7 років тому +1

      I mix the coco coir with either rice hulls or perlite for a potting mix. I add composted horse manure and biochar for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash and cantaloupe in my new wicking bucket system.

    Great video! I just started growing my own watercress by the window in my office. The growth has been slow but it's getting there. I was wondering how long do you keep your watercress around by cut and regrow before you start a new batch from seed s again? Or is it possible to start the first batch via seeds and then propagate via cutting to get an endless supply of watercress?

    • @RainbowGardens
      @RainbowGardens  7 років тому

      I divide it once the growth takes over the container. After many cuttings, the leaves get smaller and more dense, but by that time, I have usually started more (from seed) in another container. I do not really like it as much when it gets older, so I grow more form seed to keep it fresh and flavorful. It is a matter of preference if you want to plant more from seed or continue to grow from cuttings.

    • @tts80
      @tts80 7 років тому +1

      thanks for the response. I am looking to give it a go using a similar setup as yours (currently growing them in rockwool using kratsky method). I couldn't tell from the video, when propagating from a cutting, do I still need to put it in a rockwool or it's fine to leave it in the rocks directly?

  • @jinghuiniu7335
    @jinghuiniu7335 2 роки тому

    at 5:21 when you put those 4 heads to the container, do you need to make sure that there is a hole underneath each of them? Do watercress root need to go through those holes to find bigger room to develop? How much depth in general do you leave for the roots? Many thanks.

    Donna, my watercress is wonderful - really enjoying it. However, I do have quite a bit of algae growing on top of the rockwool that is now starting to go white and crusty. I am using the nutrient solution you suggested and aerating daily, but it is still growing. It doesn't seem to be affecting the plants or the water - should I be concerned? I read something about the risk of fungus gnats.

    BTW, the fumes from melting plastic are carcinogenic. So, I prefer to make holes in plastic with knife.

      They are so tiny, I honestly have no idea. I would say I put about 10 per Rockwool plug. however, if you want to grow them into big plants, you would need to thin them down to about 1 per plug. I don't mind if they are crowded and small, I like baby watercress.

      It's a very weak nutrient solution. I have tested stronger solutions, and YES, algae grows much more fast than the one I use in this video. It still grows but I noted in the video to clean the container about every other month or so. I change the water regularly.
