Feedback on success with 2009 SL550 r230. Firewall very securely attached with bolts and adhesive so that was not an option. The good news is the heater control valve is on the passenger side and accessible once wiper arms, cowling and air box are removed. The “flat band” clamps are the most difficult. To fully open them I had to move their orientation so I could use a medium vise grip. My success with the cable type of pliers was poor. While they fit, they were very difficult to close 100%. Once the clamp was slide from its clamping position, the hose came off easily. And the installation was rapid. Other tips, I used a windshield wiper puller to easily slide the wiper arm off of the spline shaft. The instructions in other posts covered details very well regarding the removal and replacement of other parts. Although it is still not really “heater” weather in S. CA, the Climate Control System once again functions as it should.
Tanks for u information i have 2013 s550 I had no heat problem was the heater control valve pay 60 for the part labor did my self safe lots of money tanks to u video

Hey Custom car guy, I have the exact same car. A 2008 MBenz S550 4matic. I need your help/advice. I took out the heater control valve but now I am trying to install it and forgot to mark the hoses. I am having trouble finding out which hose is the upper hose and lower hose. Can u please help me? Much appreciated. I just watched your video too but still couldn’t figure it out.
Excellent assessment to come up with such a clever alternative and avoid the $650 dealer charge. I have a 2009 SL550. My diagnosis was heater control valve. I have purchased one for approximately $65 last year. I have been putting off installing due to the fact I live in S. Ca and the hassle of removing the wiper motor etc. Your solution reenergized me. I am hoping I will be able to use your technique soon. If you have any other thoughts please let me know. I will post my hopefully successful results. Thanks much, bob
rparadow I’m not sure if the sl550 is built the same way but if it is, you should be able to replace it within a hour or so. Please let me know if you need any assistance. Also, please like and subscribe if you find the videos to be helpful. Thanks
Question my car blows hot and cold air in the front however the back blows hot in the summer and cold in the winter. I know there’s another valve on the passenger side in the the wall behind the front tire which is accessible from underneath the car so how do you determine which valve is bad. I’m not sure if the one you replaced is for the front and the other one I mentioned is for the rear. Your help will with this question will be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.
Do you think its the same on a 2013 s550, my heat wouldn't blow warm today, super cold air coming out all vents. Also, did you need to disconnect the battery first?
How much was the heater control valve, I believe I may have the exact same issue. I thought I may have needed a coolant flush and replacement of fresh coolant. My mechanics didnt think so because the hose(s) was warm basically meaning it was warming.
I am experiencing this problem right now. I will take it to my mechanic in the morning and inform him of the alternative route of installation. I think this video was very helpful.

I believe a 2013 may be different. You have a twin turbo motor so the heater control valve may be different but I’m not 100% sure.
