I think the oddest thing that they do is use the frames in dialogue. Where two people will be on opposite sides of the screen, which is normal, but they are looking past each other. It gives this level of disconnect between people.
Love the way this show is shot. Scenes like these with the characters so small in the frame to me feel like a visual metaphor for unseen powerful forces looming over the individual
Very well-made. The framing also serves to put the viewer in Elliot's frame of mind since the skewed perspective is very disconcerting to the average viewer and may serve to put them in a similar, paranoid, anxiety-ridden frame of mind just like Elliot's.
Saw this on Reddit, really enjoyed it mate. Please make more. Would love more in depth analysis of quadrant framing invoking different kinds of emotions. Like an episode on 'anger' and take lots of angry scenes, and how the way it's filmed, the colour, the lighting etc all culminates to that feeling of anger
I love the way it’s filmed. Not only does your eye wander to the surroundings and society instead of the characters which is the whole point of the show, but it makes me feel like I’m watching something I shouldn’t, like I’m sneaking on the characters and that just makes everything 10 times more tense
Very nice! A tip, though: try and work on your sound mixing (your voice), I put my volume up to hear you but your lower frequencies are much louder than the high frequencies I need to actually make out what you are saying, this puts the listener in a difficult decision volume-wise, especially if it is early and I can't have too much low frequency spreading around the house where I have people sleeping :)
I can't say I 100% agree with your conclusions. For example, the feeling I get watching some of these scenes isn't anxiety, but a calmness or serenity. In addition sometimes there are no anxious characters involved, for example Angela and Phillip Price having a conversation - both are very powerful and stable. There's nothing offsetting about them, and both hold their ground when challenged by each other. Inducing a feeling of unease might be one of the goals, but I don't think it explains everything about the shows camerawork choices.
They do, but we are looking at everything from the point of view of Elliot, and only Elliot. We share his anxiety, so it doesn't matter if the other characters don't feel that because Elliot does at all times.
I noticed this after I watched the entire first season and started with the second one. I was hoping to find a video about this since I found it to be unique. When I stumbled upon your video I knew this was it! Thank you very much!
Thank you for making this. I madly wanted someone to this for Mr Robot. It reminded me of the famous polish film IDA which has similar quadrant framings like this.
I am glad to see this video, I first noticed the style in the BBC show Luther. At first I found it kind of off putting, it went against the rules...but then so does the main character Luther.
Love this, I watched all of season 1 of mr robot and never really noticed this! It's crazy to see Elliot's and other similar characters personality shown through the style and format of the shot! This makes me want to rewatch the whole series with this new bit of information in mind. I guess this explains the frame always feeling alive and never feeling bored even when Elliot isn't doing much
Would've been cool if there were more examples of quadrant framing from other works and an interpretation of the moods they are supposed to represent. Informative and interesting video regardless.
This framing and the use of negative space is actually for something much bigger. The whole show operates on the basis of yin and yang. This technique helps make the isolation of the yin inside of yang and yang inside of yin more visually representable.
Could you make a video that explains how this use of "Quadrant Framing" can be ineffective? Maybe show some examples that is in poor use from either television shows or movies. Would really love to hear your thoughts.
To me, in Mr.Robot, they make the environment a ‘character’. That character is society. Another thing the framing does is put people in a bit of a ‘mind-prison’. They’re stuck in their own head. Makes the viewer feel anxious and uncomfortable.

Powerful. Exactly describes the emotion I felt when I was watching the series.
Thank you man :D

THIS VIDEO IS SO SATISFYING MAN
Proper way to display lonely Elliot! This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you James Hayes!

I really like the quick format of the video and the fact that you explained why Mr. Robot is stressful

That explains a lot, the feeling that the space is big and the characters can feel small. Thx!

I noticed right at the beginning there was something different and original about the filming, i love how this video explains it

I couldn't NOT see it. It was almost too much for me, actually.
lovely. now I'm gonna have to watch Mr Robot

Very nice, thank you! This show is surreal ❤
I found out something new. Thank you for sharing!
Awesome stuff, my friend! Was thinking similar things whilst watching it, and the unsettling feeling you get :)
EXCELLENT video & explanation,
thanks for this, subscribed :)

The intro creeped me out 🥺
The greatest television show ever made.
Very well made video!
The comet was a film to have used this framing technique before Mr robots even Ida infact used it before it.
maybe because is directed by Sam Esmail too
yeah that movie directed by same person who writed & directed mr robot.
This was a great video
Dude, rock on

Thank you! Have very pleasing voice. More of this!
Thank you very much!
You should post something that aims to replicate the style to show people how to do it with their own devices
SEASON 3 IS DIFFERENT
It's called the "Rule of Thirds" ;)
To me, in Mr.Robot, they make the environment a ‘character’. That character is society.

Nice tags, dude.
Please, try to talk clearly, I'm not native english and I can hardly understand you :(
It's only a suggestion, but good video!
7 years everyone..... anyone here 2023
Please enter subs. We are not all good to listen to English spoken and the subs would be really useful
click "options" (the gear wheel) then subtitles then English auto generated.
Is it just me or this technique is less present in season 3 and 4?
