No one should own the name of artists except the artists themselves
I do get that sentiment, but he created the band, and it wouldn't exist without him. So I get him owning the group name. The artist owns what they create, lyrics, sounds, style.
The band came up with the name so they should own it.

Simon Cowell didn't made promises to Liam Payne, he intoxicated Payne's mind and boosted his ego that he was the chosen one, after 1D broke up Liam Payne was the least successful member in terms of solo career which let to his mental breakdown to the point he went to Logan Paul's podcast in a sobby state and ranted his personal opinions. Cowell is indirectly responsible for Payne's current metal state.
Louis Tomlinson had a disaster audition sure but he is one of the underrated yet had most successful solo career and this year he even became the first male solo artist to headline the home of the worldwide famous Mexican F1 Grand Prix, the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez which had approx 65K people in attendance.
Simon Cowell didn't made 1D, 1D made themselves the magical story was true Nicole created them Simon definitely would have chosen other guys...now he is trying live of their name and in their glory 🤣🤣. there story goes around they were already picked to be a boyband before that show started and the show was just a way to launch their career and get the audience interested in them. I am not sure if it's true, but I think often times things on tv are just staged just like lots of reality tv have just scripts and such and they are more like cheap fiction that should pass as real

All.of them are doing really well in their solo career. They own the songs. They wrote most of it.
in the old days songwriters and composers would write the songs and singers would simply sing the song. Basically nothing changed now except that they lie to the audience, copy older songs or just use ghostwriters and maybe the 'artist' is in the same room when a a song is name, but most are just singers basically...but this is a problem in interviews of course as it must seem the artist is super talented and special..so they act like the artist make the songs. It's basically just as much as businesss as it has alwasy been, but they figured if they lie to the public about stuff to sell more records that is the way to go forward. If Beyonce is asked about a song, she has to have a story readay about how she made it. THese days artists can not get away with 'I do not know, I did not write or compose this..i have i no idea what it's really about...I just perform and sing"

I get the backlash he is receiving, but then again he is a manager/business man. He does not see music/entertainment as an artistic form but as a business to make money. This is how unfortunately most managers/producers/companies are in the last 20+ years.
Big part of the fall off in the number of bands is the transition to streaming. It’s not as lucrative anymore, so splitting that income is far less appealing

I love Simon's honesty, nowadays.
However, I feel something is off. He reminds me of the long-term drinkers (or druggies) from down the pub, when I was younger. They knew how to handle their drink, so they didn't look wasted, but they don't look sober either.
It's the surgery. He's been open about having gone overboard with it in the past.
Maybe he just gets anxious. I am a really sociable person but still get jitters in these kinds of scenarios. Give the man a break and maybe point the finger back at yourself ❤

Simon Cowell needs to be blacklisted. He regrets not owning the ‘One Direction’ name?! Of course the band members should own it! One Direction IS the band members! It’s like saying someone other than Taylor Swift can own her name! Louis Pearlman tried to do the same thing with Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. It didn’t work for him and it won’t work for Simon Cowell. Networks and record labels need to stay clear of this plan of his for a new boy band! The saddest part of this whole thing is that people will still turn up to the auditions. Despite everything that Simon Cowell has said and done people would still allow themselves to be exploited and compromised (physically and emotionally) just for a ‘chance’ of fame and fortune.

I heard one direction were basically already casted before they went on that tv show..it was just a good place to launch them. I have teh impression this man is full of bullshit anyway and he does not come of as particularly bright or insightful otherwise. I mean, he apparent has a talent for making this work..but I would not trust much of what he says

@@hbhd308 Simon Cowell owned plenty of 'rights'. Do you think he didn't profit from One Direction? He made more money off the band than you and I or anyone else could even imagine. The fact that he actually believes he should own their band name as well just shows how greedy and self entitled this man truly is. The 1D band (and brand) would be nothing if it wasn't for the members. Naming rights belong with the artists, regardless of how they were discovered. You know what would be revolutionary? A pop band who play instruments and their sound comes from the way they play. You can still have them work with songwriters to make sure the hooks are there, but I think it’s time to bring some human feel back to pop music.
