Do you make any videos on instate applications??? All i see is nonres being explained on any of your videos... ive never applied befor and want to figure it out, any direction would be grately appreciated... do i need to join the "insider club"??? Is the info inside the group??
Good overview of a good opportunity state that definitely has good trophy potential, although mule deer 🦌 get hunted with a rifle in the rut. I bought a NR big game combo point in the 2020 off season but since I don’t have anymore committed to going to Montana with me I didn’t buy one last off season since I knew that I would lose my preference point for not applying after two years. I sadly didn’t buy any bonus points like I should have, while I wait. I also have 2-3 bonus points for pronghorn both in the archery 🏹 only 900-20 and standard pronghorn. My goal is to hunt pronghorn in every state that I can DIY public land style, no matter the weapon type that gets me a tag 🏷 the quickest. I am thinking of doing Wyoming first followed by Montana and so on. A little bummed about not having pronghorn mentioned in this video but since I am an INSIDER I will just read the strategy article when it comes out. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and knowledge there Brandon. 🏹🦌
Can you tell us when the MT elk application strategy article will release? With the 900 series archery tag going away and some boundary changes, it would be very helpful getting my app complete this month.
When you apply it gets confusing….what is unit 323-00 mean? Is that just unit 323 or 323 through whatever 00 is? Are Antelope units different from deer? I’d appreciate any and all info.
Thanks for the question! That is the specific hunt code for which hunt you may be applying for. In this case, 323 is the hunting district and the “-00” would designate the specific hunt. For example, in hunting district 300 for antelope, you have a few hunt codes. 300-20 is an either/sex antelope tag while 300-30 is a doe/fawn antelope tag. These are both only good for HD 300. When getting ready to apply for your hunt of choice you will want to consult the Montana FWP hunting regulations to double-check the exact hunt code you are applying for. Antelope units are different than the deer/elk units. Don't hesitate to reach back out for additional clarification!
It's so frustrating that government has to make something so simple so complicated. Have a wait list for all these hunts. People pay a certain small fee each year to keep om the wait list. When your name comes up pay one fee whatever they be and then do the hunt. After you do the hunt you can re up and your name falls back to the end of waitlist. Every state and every special hunt should do this. Frustrating because this isn't rocket science.
So how's it work if you're just trying to get a deer combo license and you applied last year and paid for a bonus point and did not draw? Does that mean if you do the same thing this year you have two bonus points and one preference point all going toward the same deer combo?
Hi there, so to clarify...general combo licenses are allocated on a preference point system and special limited quota permits are allocated on a bonus point system. Those are two seperate draws and there is no crossover in preference and bonus points. If you bought bonus point(s) those will be applied toward a special limited quota permit should you apply for one. If you have preference point(s) those will be applied towards the general combo license that you apply for. When you apply, you can choose to buy a preference and bonus point, those will be applied toward your applications this year when you apply. Hopefully that helps, let me know if you have follow up questions!
Thats an interesting, and probably common mindset out there. I totally agree that the residents of the state should benefit first from their hunting opportunities. However, here's the problem. Your resident Elk tag is $20, a non-res elk tag starts at $467 before all the other fees. If non-residents get shut out who is going to make up the difference?
As of 2022, preference points are now $100 each and applicants must apply every other year or the state will zero any accumulated preference points. No applicant can have more than three preference points.
Hi Ben, the limited hunts are labeled as "elk permit" or "deer permit" under the application tab in the MFWP site. You will then go through the steps and have to select the hunts you want to apply for from a drop down menu by hunt code. Hunt codes can be found in the regulations. Hope that helps some, all the best and good luck in the draw!
Does this happen AFTER the general selection? Or NOW before the March 31 deadline. And if I don’t select any limited, I’d still be able to hunt all the accessible public land, correct?
@@benpena2832 You will need to apply now, before the deadline for special limited permits. If you draw a general combo license, yes you would be able to hunt general season units. You do not have to apply for special limited quota hunts if you do not want to.
I'm discouraged with the Montana license application, in fact I dislike quite a bit, they have mastered the art of separating the out of state sportsman from their hard owned money. They keep your application money for months at zero interest and then when you do not draw, they keep 20% of the funds and send the rest back, WTF, really? I'll pass on Montana!
@@vmancity9691 Actually, Montana cares more about generating income than the residents or non residents IMO, it's uses an asinine system of send me your money, let us keep it and draw interest on it, for a chance to enter a draw raffle on a tag. And if you give them an extra $50, they will give you a preference point, though if everyone buys one, then your chances stay the same, and again they collect more $$. After hunting there on and off for nearly 20 years, I'm not impressed how so may of the residents just hunt from their trucks, get a mile off the roads and the hunters seem to get really scarce? Not saying, it is not a good place to hunt, just saying I choose to spend my money on states that don't treat on residents as a cash cow.
Thanks for making a good out of state hunter outlet. Not! Although you guys hunt multiple states alot of people can't. Don't church up mt then hunt every where else. Make your bed and sleep in it
What are you talking about? GoHunt guys, who have go hunting as part of the business model, shouldn’t hunt anywhere else because it upsets you? They shouldn’t hunt any other state because they made a vid of Montana? The videos are informational, for people who want the experience. You can hunt other states, you just just have to decide you’re willing to sacrifice the time and deal with the unknown. It would be really great if people would leave Montana alone. Out of staters are making it hard for us residents to hunt

@@logansebela9231 all the other states do the same thing.
If I apply for, and get drawn for, a big game combination license, does that mean I can get one elk and one deer? or just of the 2?
1 of each
In areas where Whitetail and Mule Deer are available, it is my understanding that the deer can be of either species.
Big Game combination is valid for one deer and one elk on general season areas. Good luck in the draw!
How and when are preference points purged?
As of 2022, preference points are now $100 each and applicants must apply every other year or the state will zero any accumulated preference points. No applicant can have more than three preference points.
I purchased the big game combo but didn’t see any options for the limited entry. Is there a second draw the limited entry hunts? If so, when?

Hi, Lance! Looks like Montana FWP is in the process of drawing. We expect results soon. Good luck!
