Visions of Johanna was the best part of 7/8 for me. Possibly Drums/Space too, but those were less distinct memories and more "in the moment " and tend to melt together without having lyrics to set boundaries.

This was my first and only with Jerry. I was 15, a friend 14 and we hitchhiked from plattsburgh ny to highgate with 50 bucks n a dream. Still so surreal that this occurred over 20 yrs ago. Anyone who says this show sucked is a spoiled dead bitch or never got to see them. I am so grateful for every moment life and luck gave us through this escapade. I am foever grateful!

My first show was 7/8/90 and this was my last 7/8/95 it took me years before I realized it while looking at my ticket stubs. Saw a few in between, good music lots of fun....best memory from this show, Visions of Johanna, I think it may have been the only song Jerry got all the words correct.

That's the only tune that I clearly recall on 7/8 without looking at a setlist. I remember our larger group getting together and joking a little and renaming US Blues to US Snooze because of all the missed lyrics. I sensed death, saw something like a vortex open in St. Louis, but I didn't really notice Jerry's condition nor did I believe that he wouldn't out pace death again. I felt as though something needed another "band member" to feed it. The vortex was a few feet above the stage between Jerry and Vince and I remember "arguing" with it and trying to convince myself or whatever the reasons why it couldn't take any of the guys.

95 shows... tragic, sad, glorious, magical, disastrous, horrid, beautiful, ugly, and blissful...usually all in one song. I wouldn't have missed it for the world, but it was hard to see Jerry dying before our eyes and it makes me even sadder watching it now. Great memories though.

W Ww Also.. miss Vince. Met him several times and was the sweetest, kindest, genuine guy I have met in the business. He was truly happy to just be along for the ride. Like so many of us, he had demons and I am sad they got the best of him as well.

Tampa '95... None of knew we were that close to the end of an era. I remember hearing the news which felt like just a few days after the show and my hubby and I just stared at eachother in disbelief. "We JUST saw him. There's no way..." I'm so grateful we were able to make that show and we both still talk about it frequently, 23 years later.
Looking back at the video now, it seems apparent that he wasn't feeling 100%.

  • @LonePigsyAndCub

I'm so sick of all the critics of late era Dead. On his worst day, struggling with health problems and addiction, Jerry stood and delivered like a fucking road warrior. Yes there are a lot of mistakes but they always made mistakes. So please don't be put off by the negative know-it-alls and judge for yourself. Is it perfect? No, but it's still soulful AF, and at times still very beautiful.

    • @jerrygarcia9244
      @jerrygarcia9244 7 років тому +6

Well honest critics would admit that these performances were awful. Even the band has admitted that. Jerry should never have toured in 1995 at all. They all needed a break. And I don't go to see live bands make as you wrote, "a lot of mistakes". Since when did we lower the bar that low that you are saying acceptable?
If you look back toward the end, the Dead were having trouble selling out some shows because it got out that the shows were awful.
Don't be sick of late era Dead critics, be angry at jerry or his disease. He provided the listless, jumbled, mumbling, confused music that was 1995.

Yeah, I totally agree with you I just couldn't be bothered to argue with that troll who obviously isn't a real head. I'm a huge fan of the sound the Dead were cultivating between '93-'95. I love the entire GD and JGB history but if I had to put a desert Island collection together, this era would be well represented. This clown using words like "awful" and 'lowering the bar" just prove he has NO IDEA what he's talking about. Grateful Dead were on a level so high above all other bands and WITHOUT A NET... no one comes close in musicality and bravery!

never sad to see jerry. first show in 75 or this one in 95. the magic of jerry never shapes boundaries of sadness.
life is ever fleeting. no one gets out alive. and how many 10s of thousands of moons did Jerry give us all he had? every show every state every venue every country every album, w/the band w/ his own band, collabs w/kahn,grissman other musical geniuses...
those that write negative opins about jerry probably expected too much out of the man. and he never wanted or liked fans worshiping him.

I ground scored a 2nd row floor for this show (miracled by those who are not of this realm) my seat was a bit to the right of Garcia but of course I pulled up right in front of him for as long as I could..lasted a couple songs if my memory serves me right. The visions of Johanah was absolutely perfect with Jerry doing a full whirl with his chubby arm and a fist pump. Funny too cuz there's a gazillion lyrics to visions and he got em all or close to it but he couldn't remember the lyrics to anything else especially 1st set. Totally botched Althea but ask me if I care.....nope. I didn’t get to see enough shows(9) to complain about any of them. Plus as 17 yr old I was a deadhead to the core but I didn't yet at that time in my life realize just how much my appreciation and love for the dead and Jerry would continue to grow so much so that you just can't foresee it when your young wild and dumb.. I was always into them for the music im a guitar player who you could say was steeped in the ways of the grateful dead since I was 14 but its crazy my love for the band and there influence on me only seems to grow stronger daily. They are and always will be a permanent part of my life. They were there in my past and in my childhood and they will be with me on the day I move on to the fattest trip of them all at the great gig in the sky! You all know exactly what im saying! Its the GD affect. .not all of us are part of the gd affect but those who are know it. Its in our very being our DNA and under our fingernails! Lol long live the grateful fucking dead

I hadn't seen them since the previous October, and can remember being legit startled at how much Jerry had aged in that 8 months or so. His hair looked stone white in person that day, and you could tell he had put on some weight.
And he just didn't seem to be having his typical great time on stage. You could tell it was a struggle for him. It was an odd show, but still a hell of an experience.

Every few years I pop on some 94 and 95 shows.... and just not happening. The flow just disappeared in the shows. When Drums n Space are the high lights of the shows, you know things arnt good. Theres some decent shows from these 2 years but overall its "Lacking in some direction". I do have to say I love from the spring 95 Knick show the H>S>F, that some out there shit and for 95 was beyond their means of the usual night. But it just makes me sad to watch. I followed Ratdog around and Phil and I occasionally would catch Billy and Mickey. Other Ones came and went and then we got the Dead and that was a quick cash grab imho. But Ratdog (2005-2009) and Phil had some great shows. Phil still has great shows and performs with some of my favorite musicians, most recently Stu Allen went out with him on East Coast tour and that made my day. But to me Dead n Co was a continuation of the bad part of 95 Grateful Dead. All of a sudden these bigger shows attracted a younger crowd and less of a good vibe all over again. I felt like an outsider the past few times I went to see Dead n Co and I walked away depressed like in 94 and 95. Because the musics quality was just not there and the tempo and energy were so far from there. I know im just suppose to be happy they are still playing. I am in one way, but id rather see them do it in another way. At least DnC is over, but Phil kept it real and hes doing something unique and with energy every night he plays. Since Jerrys passing id always followed Bobby and that changed in the past 10 years. But I love the Grateful Dead, but just like DnC is hard for me to watch/hear, so is this. Id rather remember Jerry and listen to jerry from 93 or before ;-) That will leave you with a smile on your face and I think thats what Jerry would want, not the sadness that flowed thru the crowd and stages during these final 2 years. Peace.

I noticed Jerry forgot a lot of the words the last couple years before he died and his playing suffered. But when I mentioned it to other fans, it was out of concern for his well being, not criticism. I hated It when people criticised him and he gave it his all and didn't want to let fans down. But it WAS a fact that his playing and health suffered towards the end, an objective truth I think, not subjective. I think people could have been nicer about that though, maybe more compassionate. The man was on his way to having a heart attack...no one could predicted that, of course. But he should have taken some time off. Good Lord. Long live fat man.😢😢💗💗

If reincarnation is true and we get to start our next life at any point in time in history, I want to be born in 1947 so that I am 18 in 1965. From there, I follow the Grateful Dead in various Westfalia's with a crew I meet along the way all the way through until 1995. Then eject, go back, and repeat again and again and again.

His guitar playing all through the set is very on point....
The truth that people can't seem to wrap their head around about their sound during this time is that the weak link in it is generally Bob Weir's tone and the fact that Phil's Bass tone is mixed in a much more subdued way, and it seems like his playing style is a little bit more subdued during this time as well, but I can't tell because you just don't hear him as much...
The strong points of 1995, and why I feel like overall it is a better year than 94, is Jerry's tone is better than it's been in years, and Vince is playing awesome pretty much all the time and has much better sound presets that he did when he started. Like night and day much better. Also his playing is very tasteful during this time.... also, I think the drums and the drum sets are mixed much much better during these final tours, before all you can hear is hi-hat washing around but you can hear the times and the upper parts of the symbols way better Mickey turns to percussion rather than trap more often.
Look, I understand the knee-jerk Panic oh my God I can't believe Jerry is about to die reaction that people have with this late are a dead, but honestly you just have to listen a little more and you are rewarded with all the great stuff that is going on, and you also realize that these guys were still pushing and evolving their sound just like always.

Part of what is upsetting is that I was at this show and my friend and I watched a very coherent and happy jerry walking around with his wife, not backstage, but behind the stage area at solider Field. Then forty minutes later he is listless on stage. It's a shame because you could tell what he did just before going on stage to start the first and the second sets.

It hurts to see Jerry so visibly sick and clearly not wanting to be there. I went to both of these shows and outside of Johanna on 7/8 and So Many Roads on 7/9, he bungled the lyrics on virtually everything else.
His bags were packed to leave this mortal coil. It was pretty clear.
    I still miss him though.

How you can look at Jerry and then decide that he didn't want to be there is some pretty amazing telepathic shit. Especially considering all facts point to the obvious. In other words, his personal trainers and anyone else advising him told him to watch his health and take time off, or when Phil wanted to pack his bags and quit the rest of the tour after the death threat before Deer Creek and Jerry famously said no way. All facts point to that he wanted to only be there, AND listen to his playing on Tennessee Jed and Vince, Bob and him digging in HARD on eternity, that's musical evidence right there that he definitely wanted to be there, jamming in front of his fans with his musical brothers...... I swear, people make the most laziest and stereotypical comments about 1995, and really the Vince era in general. I can tell they never really dug in past the surface knee-jerk reaction they had to a very small amount of it.... yeah yeah yeah, "but in 1990" "but in 1974"....
People who can't listen to Grateful Dead without comparing it to some version or some ideal imagined version of what they think it's SUPPOSED to sound like obviously learned nothing from the whole point of Grateful Dead music which is to be in the moment and not expect or use your ego as a filter to listen to it.

Post 91 shows were pretty bad at points and ok at others. If it's all someone saw, they probably hold those shows in pretty high standing. If you like it listen, if you don't , don't listen. Beyond that, all of the "jerry would like this" "hate this" etc etc is pure goofiness. Even if you met the guy, did you really know him? Much less know his likes and dislikes from the grave.

For those saying heroin killed Jerry, you're wrong and here's some history. He didn't kill himself with heroin. There were a number of facts shared publicly that contributed to his death, which includes finding it almost impossible to take an extended break because there were many many mouths to feed in the organization, as well as the enormous stress of trying to cope with the idea that people thought he was a god. He also had a poor diet for years - for the most part. Part of his playing problems was that he suffered from carpal tunnel. He also had a touch of nephropathy in his hands from diabetes. I'm not making this up.. It's all out there publicly. To be a lifelong smoker didn't help.
