    I remember seeing that as a kid and feeling stunned when they came upon the Constellation.
    A ship as powerful as the Enterprise but burned out and blasted beyond belief.
    It was our WTF could do that moment!?!

    I love this review as much as all of them. SFD is simply the best!! One small note ... you might want to make up your mind on whether the ship is the CONSTELLATION (it is) or the Constitution. Don't change it -- it's actually kinda funny hearing you go back and forth between the two names. It might make for a fun drinking game ...

    I think this episode very much accomplished what it set out to do. As a child in the 90s growing up with my mothers TOS VHS collection, Doomsday Machine terrified me and was the one episode my sister and I wouldn’t watch during marathon sessions.

    Another fun fact: The Planet Killer makes a reprise in the 4x game "Sword of the Stars" as one of the possible Grand Menaces- endgame juggernauts that can randomly spawn into the galaxy to wreak havoc. It drives straight through the galaxy and vaporizes every system within 5ly of its path- including the star and any warp nodes connecting the system to adjacent systems that node-drive based fleets could use.
    Thankfully, it goes down to heavy firepower, no tricks needed other than rock solid point defenses and some damn good armor and shielding. Or just massive volleys of missiles, which break the auto-resolve-combat algortihm badly.

      The original music was a modified version of the transformers theme, cutting the recognizably transformers elements from it caused it to sound janky so this helps a bit.

    This episode always got me how Spock obeyed the Admiral when no one on the Enterprise would have obeyed Commodore Decker if he ignored him. It's probably why Tuvok always followed Janeway despite logic and common sense suggesting otherwise. Strict obedience must be apart of the Vulcan lifestyle.

    Here's a nice review. Some amusing jokes and a decent analysis.

  • @slavkei
    @slavkei 5 років тому +2

    "Pure antiprotons" is actually pretty scary. It means that something not only has a way to contain antimatter, but can prevent the negatively charged core from attracting anything to neutralize the atomic charge. That takes a lot of energy to begin with for regular matter, even moreso when dealing with antimatter. Granted, it's Star Trek, so power scaling is a joke and power levels mean less than Dragon Ball, but it's still an impressive feat to be able to just casually use a stream of antiprotons to hose down enemies.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 5 років тому

      You in fact store anti-matter same way as you store any charged particles..

    • @slavkei
      @slavkei 5 років тому +1

      There's a difference between charged particles and a bottle of hydrogen nuclei. You do not want a single proton getting anywhere NEAR that mass. Eventually, the security needed to hold antimatter costs more power than the conversion engine does... unless your technology level is so high that you can get that kind of absolute protection at an incredibly low energy cost.
      Remember, the cost of storage has to be subtracted from the amount of **usable** power obtained from annihilation, so the more storage costs, the less useful the weapon or fuel becomes. That's why you don't see cars running on burning logs despite wood being so much more common and easy to obtain than refined petroleum- the energy required to store the fuel and bring it with the vehicle would be far far too high to offset the low cost of the fuel and the poor amount of usable energy extracted from it.

    This is my all time favorite TOS episode! Thank you SO MUCH, Chuck! :D BTW, there is an excellent retrospective (which was actually sort of a sizzle reel for a full blown documentary) titled _Star Trek, "The Doomsday Machine" Revealed (concept demo special edition)_ ua-cam.com/video/AAfEXDCsRmg/v-deo.html I HIGHLY recommend fans of this episode watch it! It has a lot of behind the scenes information along with several interviews with those directly involved with the episode, both in front of and behind the camera.

    I think this episode makes it clear why Starfleet abandoned the Toughlove method of therapy! This man goes through a single Trumatic event and irrevocably loses his mind, the car goes through years and years of sometimes literal torture and even death and yet seems to come out the other end unscathed psychologically speaking every time. Obviously Diana Troi is far more affective than we often give her credit for!

    Do me a favour and take note of Brian Tyler's score when you're reviewing Regeneration. It's the only thing that kept a semblance of tension up throughout an otherwise Enterprise-like episode of Enterprise. He did the music for a couple of episodes in the early seasons I think, Canamar and something else. Great composer, shame about the show.

  • @CybershamanX
    @CybershamanX 5 років тому +2

    Personally, I didn't really care for some of the remastered special effects. They didn't really convey the scale of the Doomsday Machine very well in several shots. At one point it looks like it's just a few ship lengths behind the Enterprise! And the shot of Deckard stealing the shuttlecraft looks cheesy. You know how bad CGI objects often don't have any "weight"? Yeah, that was the case with the shuttlecraft. It sort of pops up and spins around in a jerky kind of manner. In fact, throughout the remastered series, they sometimes seem to have trouble with ships in general. In _The Enterprise Incident_ , the shot with the Enterprise being surrounded by Romulan ships has a Warbird (TOS version) that swoops in, but it just moves all wrong, just like the shuttlecraft. But, other than that, overall the episode looks beautiful. :) For the most part, the new CGI planet killer is definitely an improvement over the original. It's just that I wish they would have done a little better. I don't know if the people who did it didn't have much experience or if it was a time thing, or what. But I've seen cheap CGI that looks better than what we saw here. :/

    Don´t laugh about the possibility of it being Unicron. Star Trek has had so many crossovers with other franchises in comic books that there is a good chance there is a Star Trek x Transformers one.

    • @sousedmonk7418

    • @TheRezro

      @@sousedmonk7418 Not many people remember that Marvel The Transformers comic is in fact canon part Earth-616 and yes, there is Star Trek/X-Men crossover and on top of that Hasbro and Paramount (co owners of Star Trek) work currently on Hasbro Cinematic Universe, so that is not the joke as it totally could be the case as Hasbro multiverse is still technically sub-branch of Marvel multiverse (Cybertronians are Celestials). Especially as My Little Pony (which lore was also created by Marvel) already use Phoenix Force and Infinity Stones/Elements of Harmony in G4. And I know how ludicrously insane it sound, but you don't need put much effort to in fact verify all that. It is absolutely true, and on top of irony Disney was also one who invent MLP design in Pastoral Symphony in Fantasia and Toei Universe (Super Sentai) also is part of Marvel Universe due to they cooperation in 70's confirmed as canon in Spider-Verse. Should I mention here that both Disney and now Hasbro owned Power Rangers? It is in fact absolutely fascinating multi-media octopus :D

      Only issue being Unicron wasn't created for another 30 years. The giant novel Vendaetta gives an origin story. No both sides were not wiped out. The thing was only the prototype Borg killer. Yes the builders were killed off by the Borg. The main weapon never launched. The prototype was built in hiding outside the main part of the Galaxy out in the halo. Find the novel if you want to know more.

Every other case of someone "creating" him like with Primacron, were usually about misguided attempts to repair him or pure coincidence. Such a great episode. Still, so, you've gone through the trouble of mining a collapsed star for neutroniun and turning it into a hull. You pat yourself on your back, nothing will be able to penetrate it. Then, you leave a huge hole in one end of your weapon, that leads directly to the machinery inside. You gave it a mouth, that doesn't close! So silly!
