Nice materials love the aquamarine and moldavite . Hey I just found some awesome garnets in a creek a few days ago. I’m not sure what kind but there crystal structure is amazing. If you don’t mind I did a few videos on them. Thanks 🙏
I don't mind.
Nice finds!
Thank you very much!
Wow, you found some very nice pieces, can5 wait to see what you do with them.
I think you will like what I cut them into. Thanks!
Awesome :)
Thank you!
Thanks for putting together this video, it was very interesting. I got some great rough in Tucson this year. I got the Mt Antero aqua marine that I've been looking for, a few spessartite garnets because I've never faceted spessartite garnets before and wanted to give it a try. Also picked up a parcel of pink-red spinels which looks like fun, some pinkish/whiskey colored zircons and a parcel of rainbow colored Umba sapphires. Also had to go visit the Angry Turtle at the 22nd street show to get some super glow in the dark GAGG. The USFG symposium was really good. Lots of chances to meet everyone you only communicate with via internet. The final event on Saturday night, the hobnob, brought out all of the great facet rough dealers this year, John Garsow, Farooq and Amir Hashmi, Jeffery Hill, Dan Lynch, Mike Puerta and others.
Sounds like you had a great time this year! Let me know how your Spessartite turns out when you cut it! Best of luck!
Went there this year also. Love it as always. Meeting new people and picked up rough and emeralds. Got new contacts also.
Yes, agree. I always make a new contact or two, even this year, and I've been going for many years.
Amazing! Thank you for sharing where you go at the show for the pieces, I'd love to go one day. The last time i checked, I was overwhelmed with the sheer amount of shows and had no idea where to start!
I always find something at every show I go to, so if you have time, visit all the shows...but that's going to take days and a lot of walking 🙂 I visited many more shows than in the video, but just showed where I made purchases. Some of the shows require credentials to get in, like AGTA, GJX, G&LW Holidome and Joggs, but many are open to the public, like 22nd Street and the Pueblo shows....but again, it is possible to uncover a great buy on a super piece of rough at any show...that is what makes Tucson so much fun.
I get it. I've been a pretty impulsive rough buyer over the last few months too. I've faceted for the last 3 years on a max. monthly budget of $100 Canadian which doesn't add up to many rough stones to facet. So since I received a bit of a windfall, I've been going a bit crazy .. and I'm loving it. :)
But boy, would I love to get my hands on some of that Aqua. If you need any help with any of that rough, I'm your daisy. 😁
Sounds like we are both on a rock buying budget 🙂
Man...that deeper aquamarine is killer! 🤤
Yes, it's hit an miss, in that some years I can't find any great aquamarine, except in large lots where the dealer wants to sell it as a parcel and won't let you select. This year there was a lot of Aquamarine available. Next year, who knows. Always a great time in Tucson!
I heard you say on one of your tutorials about a factors group meeting in Franklin, NC in July. Do they still do it when in July is it th his year?
Yes, there is an annual meeting in Franklin NC by the United States Faceters Guild or USFG. The event will be in a complex called "The Fun Factory" this year. The dates are 25-27 July. Admission is free.
Lucky dawg.
Thank you.
If I wood stand up in 0400 in the morning my wife whould call me crazy
Yup, my wife thinks I'm crazy...but I think it is great to build a habit of getting up early, devoting a few hours in the morning just to cutting, with no interruptions and no distractions. But yes, it takes a bit of work to get your body used to a new system where you get up EARLY each day.
I was able to purchase a few deep red /clear red opals.
I USED to have quite a bit of Red Mexican Opal...lol...but before I started worked on reducing my inventory of Peridot, I cleared our my inventory of Mexican Fire Opals, some of which I had been holding for many years. I am happy to report that I only have four pieces of Mexican Opal at the moment...no Reds, but some wonderful orange...I hope I do not ever grow an inventory of Mexican Opals as large as I previously had., as I really am trying hard to cut more than I buy 🙂 I hope to put a dent in my inventory of rough this year...probably just a small dent. 🙂
but I understand you perfectly MIchael. I have the same disease as you have about cutting beautifull gems ))))
:-) Yes... I really enjoy cutting gemstones!!!
What is a good machine for beginners?
If you are in the USA then the Ultra Tec V5, or the Facetron, or the Gem Master II or III. If you are in another country, then it depends on what they use as it may be easier to maintain. Another good machine would be one that is used by your local gem cutting club...if they have a machine and 'tutors' you might go with that. Best of luck.
Those Fire Opals are so big and juicy/gemmy lookin........ That I wonder if they might be perfect as they are, and presented as focal pieces on a necklace, surrounded in yellow gold thats been roughly finished, and festooned with dozens of those Peridot you cut while at the show, and maybe a hand full of smaller accent diamonds ranging from F-M color, because nobody is gonna really care about the diamonds anyway..... So they can be sprinkled here and there.
That would be a very unique necklace! I like it!
