    Before you use a plant check to see if it is on a noxious weed or invasive species list. Backyard pond owners have damaged large areas of wild lands by introducing weeds. If you don't think they can excapse your pond, we assure you they can ... and will. Birds are very effective and spreading plants.

    Hi and please can you advise me. Nearly 6 years ago I bought this house and it came with an extended secrete garden and half acre natural pond. It was an enchanting oasis and haven for all the local wildlife and an amazing place to retire to and tend lovingly. Then Homewood School Tenterden built a 3G rubber dust pitch next to it which in heavy rain overflowed into our small lake. The water lilies died first, then all oxygenating weed and then bank reeds started dying. A willow tree died and a big Cancian pine died

      Unlikely the surface has contaminated the pond. Drains are built in to avoid puddles and ice forming.
      I would suspect weed killer has been applied to the ground.

    I was typing just now about our poison small lake and something went wrong before I had finished. Our lake seems to have slightly recovered after 3 years. Fish were spawning yesterday and the water looks a bit clearer yet still sterile of pondlife and aquatic plants apart from about six large large carp. We need tons of pond weed and reeds. Will they grow again is our big worry or will we be wasting our money? By the way the EA refused to take up our case on grounds it was a "Localized Issue" The school simply said "Prove it". Ashford Council have left us in mid air so far. Banks have been caving in so I am using tones of rocks to save the banks and perimeter footpath. It is costing a fortune and breaking my back at age 77.

    How often do you have to clean your water of algae if you the water surface is ~50% covered with a floating plant?
    I have water hyacinth, but I have also been draining and refilling my tank everyday (using the water to water potted plants) and I want to know if I need to clean it if I stop. The water hyacinth appear to be suffering from my constant disturbance of the water, but I don't want algae forming either.

    • @khakicam5400
      @khakicam5400 4 роки тому

      The hyacinth growth rate will tend to match the nutrient levels. In my opinion you're better off to periodically thin the hyacinth as a way of removing absorbed nutrient and throw it on the garden as mulch. You should hardly ever need to change the water if you do.

    • @khakicam5400
      @khakicam5400 4 роки тому

      PS I was referring to a pond situation. I don't have experience with smaller tanks, which will be inherently less stable, but theoretically it should work the same

  • @khakicam5400
    @khakicam5400 4 роки тому +22

    Good info. I'd add that when cut and thinned periodically to remove the absorbed nutrients these plants tend to break down into fantastic humic compost for your veggie garden and fruit trees.
    PS. Careful with Typha roots around pond liner though, the rhizome tips are very sharp and they'll clog a small pond or reed bed in no time.

    • @khakicam5400

    Great information. I would add one bit of caution. Some oxygenators such as Parrots Feather & also water Hyacinths can grow aggressive root systems. So much so the fish have much less room to swim and have difficulty getting from one part of the pond to another. You need to regularly trim the length of the roots back. This has been my experience. I’ve even lost fish who died trying to jump over clumps Of plants 🌱 and got stuck out of water.

    • @lemonlime1920
      @lemonlime1920 2 роки тому

      I have a 500 gallon pond with around 12 comet and shubunkin goldfish. The pond build used the same iris in our pond as he used in a wet area of our yard to soak up some of the wetness. We have had our pond for 11 years and the fish have been fine. We have a devil of a time keeping the iris cut back every couple of years though. The rhizomes tend to want to take over. We dug them up out of the yard this past spring because of that. Last year we removed about 2/3 the iris in our pond and I can’t tell a difference in algae levels

I couldn't get any of my lettuce to multiply. I bought six plants and ended the summer with six plants. Any idea why?

    The heavy rain we’ve had destroyed my pond. good bacteria wasn’t enough to kill the string algae and my fish ended up with fin disease from falling leaves and bad water quality.
    My fish are vegan and eat most of my floating plants. I have a separate tank of duck-weed and Spangles that I drip feed into the pond.
    I’ve planted Lilly’s and removed the fish to a 30 gallon first aid tank where I am treating them. But the Owner of the property situated the pond in a sunny wind swept spot.
    While the fish are not producing waste in the pond I want to plant Callitriche Stagnalis, Salvinia auriculata, Trapa Natans.
    I’ve drained the pond and taken the sludge deposits from the bottom and filled with de-chlorinated water.
    I’m testing water quality till I can return the fish

    I just added goldfish into an outdoor pond and a week later it’s already green and cloudy. I tried algaefix yesterday but omits no difference. So I can plant any of these in the water and it will work and keep it relatively clear? I don’t want to add soil based plants

      Add pond snails to the pond and they will eat the algae

      If it's Koi, try putting small 5-10mm gravel on the base of the pond for them to suck on, a natural behaviour which can keep them entertained

      @@imgonnabefree I've only got goldfish, about 20 since they bred, but have a pond full of a wide variety of plants, so maybe you'll have to start eating some of the plant killers! Or perhaps try some vermimesh guards till the plants are established?

    Just built a 250-gallon stock tank pond with a few fancy goldfish in it and have been wondering what plants to add. Thank you for the quick and informative video!

    Can you plant water plants in terracotta pots in a pond?

      We had some in ours, replaced the old plants and those pots seemed to be very brittle and broke easily when we removed them. I would recommend plastic pond baskets if you fully submerge them.

      Davehiphop, you can buy pond plant containers from Lowes.

    Hello. Great info for this new koi pond owner!
    My koi destroy any plants I put in with them so I have to place the plants into the upper pool, above the waterfall. My thought was to place the plants into the upper pond and, when overgrown, thin them out by placing them into the main pond to eventually help cover both parts...however, the upper portion of the pond is very shaded and I've had trouble growing plants there.
    Any thoughts on aquatic plants that can tolerate lots of shade? Perhaps some of the ones mentioned in the video are shade tolerant?
    Thanks!
