    I use aquarium tubing suction cups to anchor my house plants at the top of my aquarium. What’s nice is you can adjust the height of the plant by sliding the suction cup up or down on the aquarium wall.

    I use shower baskets with holes and suction cups. They blend in nicely, hold the plants in place and let the roots through. Also, slices cut off a pool noodle make excellent floating plant holders

    You should also thoroughly rinse all the soil off the roots and give the leaves a good rinse as well before putting plants in a fish tank. That’s to wash off any fertilizer which may be in the soil and/or insecticides on the plants which may be toxic to your aquarium inhabitants. Some people will actually put newly purchased plants in quarantine for several weeks. “Bargin bin” plants may be on sale because they’re stressed due to some insect infestation. The quarantine is to avoid introducing plant pests (thrips, mites) to an already established healthy, thriving system.

    I was having algae issues in my 10 gallon guppy tank, until I took out the silk plants & replaced them with anubias and just for fun I added a sprig of pothos. Not only did everything grow really well, but the algae cleared up!. I've added another sprig to my betta tank that's also planted, and it's starting to clear up as well!

    This just a thing I did may help some of you out. You may have some plastic hanging pots around. You can use the clip part that connects the arms to the plastic pot. I place the plants in the clip. You use it as an arm that you can cut to length you then can use a lighter to bend the plastic to make a hook that will go over the side of your tank or pond

    Great video Nick! If you want Vanilla Beans you will have to try and pollinate the flowers your self as in the wild they are pollinated by the Mexican melipona bee, there is a large variety of plants you can use such as sedges, aquatic stem plants and any other aquatic plant that grows emerged, if you have enough lighting you can even use some water loving trees if you have enough light and space, your tanks are coming along nicely and the plants add a great touch to your room and make it look so much more natural with all the roots in the tanks, the fish seem much more happier with that little bit of natural cover as well, nice job! 🙂

      @@KeepingFishSimple 🤣🤣 Let the Mexican Government know, I think they are now endangered, most of the Vanilla produced is now hand pollinated, I used to grow the Orchid as well but it never flowered, cool Orchid though it will just grow in leaf litter and climb just about anything, a cool novelty plant.

  • @drea4195

    Fascinating!
    Since you've had some success with the vanilla bean orchid, have you considered trying any other orchids? They could be an amazing addition of color and beauty to a fish tank setup. I have a few orchids that have done well for me in my bay window but the thought of trying them in a fish tank is a little bit scary for me, I don't want to kill them after all.
    Please let us know if you can do it!

      @ultimatefishkeeping8 6 місяців тому

      @aigai83 That will be cool. I hope that it works out for you. 🙂
      Did you start by having the bottom part of the seed in a glass of water for it to throw out roots?
      The reason I ask is because you want it to have only water roots so that it is a matter of just putting it straight in instead of having to transition the plant. 👍🏼🙂👍🏼❤️

    • @aigai83
      @aigai83 6 місяців тому +1

      I have one avocado, already planted in soil, it was growing a root for a month now and stem is growing slowly. I live in Atlantic Canada, so it isn't really ideally warm in the house. Still it is growing under a neon light, keeps it a bit warmer than rest of the house. I have a few seeds that are more recent, with tiny roots started to grow about a week ago, I guess I will wait for them to grow longer roots and will stem them into my 50 gallon community thank. I am planning to drill holes on a drift wood I found on a nearby beach (I boiled the wood branches) and attach the branch floating on top of the water. I will wait for my avocados to have longer roots first. I also recently planted green and purple basil seeds, dwarf tomato seeds, and parsley seeds, I might plant my basil seedlings the same way as well. I'm not sure about parsley or dwarf tomato, though. Thank you so much for asking.

      You can also grow an Avocado plant with developing water roots by growing it from seed, as you will see in this link. ua-cam.com/video/FCIBbSJiDMI/v-deo.htmlsi=LnUqvgIXpWdoU63c

    I use wooden pegs and lacky bands for my aquarium bound houseplants. They peg onto the glass perfectly and provide a tiny bit of inert media for the plant to root into. Alot of rainforest plants grow inbetween the branches of trees so are used to rooting into wood in the wild
    Also of u plant your plants inpots of leca then peg them to the rim of your tank they grow really well.

    Great job. The scope for using plant growth to reduce nitrates is immense. I had a pond in North England, about 1000litre (250 gallons), it was truly green in early summer…bought some watercress from the supermarket and chucked a handful into the pond…it went bananas and the algae growth disappeared so the nitrate fell to zero. Benefit, it’s easy to pull out if it’s gets too out of hand and in the winter it dies back to root.

    I found a sweet potato vine plant in the clearance section of Walmart garden, and decided to see if I could grow it out of a fish-tank. It worked amazingly well and the plant is HUGE now, it had a big beautiful bunch of roots that flow in the water. And it’s making its way across the top of the tank now it’s quadrupled in size since I got about 3-4 months ago. I use it in my African cichlid tank and they leave the roots alone.

The plant grew incredibly in a year. Roots are coming down the tank and shripms seem to ove to be going into the roots. I had a venus fly trap planted there as well, but that plant died very fast. apparently, they don't like either a damp or nutritious environment.

The one with the pothos was significantly clearer than the one with no plants. They really do make a significant difference in your tank.
