Kit, you're gonna be blown away by the video on Simo Häyhä. I'm not gonna spoil it, but it's FANTASTIC.

There was a famous Marine fighter pilot who was part of the Flying Tigers, Gregory "Pappy" Boyington. Boyington learned how to fight against the Japanese under Chennault while he was part of the Flying Tigers, and then when we went to war against the Axis Powers, he returned to the Corps to train Marine pilots how to fight against the Zero, the Oscar, and the Val.

I surprised that Fat Electrician forgot to mention that the Flying Tigers were the first Americans to encounter the infamous Japanese Zero! Chenault wrote to Washington about the Zero, how much of the American fighter planes had at the time were completely outmatched by the Zero's performance and Chenault even had an idea of how to counter it! But like much of Chenault's other reports, he was ignored.

He found out that the Zero had way less armor than the Warhawk, which is what gave them their incredible maneuverability. He developed a strategy when fighting against the Zero and Oscar, which was basically not to dogfight them, but brawl them.
Because Imperial Japan never put armor on the Zero or the Oscar, and hadn't developed self-sealing fuel tanks, Chennaut found that even using basic tracers, it was very easy to set fire to Japanese warplanes if you aimed for their fuel tanks.

14:03 In fairness(?), the plane that started this notion was the B-10, a peacetime bomber. When it was built and in service, it was the fastest warplane (for the US at least), even outrunning the fighters of its time. It was not _that_ unreasonable to assume that because it could outrun fighters of its time, then future bombers, seeing more-or-less all of the same future advancements that fighters would, would be able to outrun future fighters.
Mind you, I only say that it was "not _that_ unreasonable." It was still a pretty dumb and unreasonable notion, which was made quite clear in World War Two, especially during the daylight bombing raids over continental Europe.

My grandpa was among the engineers with them. I wish he was still around to confirm this story for me. Among others.

I wouldn't bash Blue sky too much.
A LOT of artists moved there when X said ANY artwork, stories, written projects posted on the platform was subject to being used by Elon's AI program.
In other words you have no copy right to you own artwork. A complete dick move.
Are there some weenies on Blue sky? sure. Are there a lot of artists there protecting their rights to their art? Absolutely.

The P-40 in spite of not being the plane America had before the start of WW2 and not being the most most powerful high performance plane of the war is still about the biggest style icon of that era. Shark face P-40s are just cool looking to any kid growing up and still are to grown adults. Wish we had that style with more power and performance back then to make it's legacy one of a much more menacing high performance threat with shark teeth than the models limitations were capable of. Either way the Flying Tiger pilots made what they could out of what the P-40 had to give and made an impressive record enough anyways. The Flying Tigers were certainly renowned for their skill in battle and for being plane style icons of their time. LOL I think adding a Shark face makes your plane perform better, I think that is just how it works.

The P40 is one of my favorite planes of all time! I love it for being a plucky fighter that held the line!

Kit, My good man. You never watched "Black sheep squadron" growing up!?! The leader of that group was Pappy Boyington who started flying against the Japanese with the FlyingTigers..
There is a movie that predates the show called Baa Baa Black sheep that covers a bit of his time in China.
Including when he got screwed out of pay, So he stole his P40 and flew it to Burma, Put it down in a field when he ran out of gas and walked the rest of the way to a friends Villa.
Did I mention he took his dog with him? lmao

Love your reactions but I just want to say I blame you for this particular video on a unit I already knew a lot about... if you didn't already know Pappy Boyington who commanded the Black Sheep Squadron was a part of the Flying Tigers.
