My guinea pig is 8 years old and ive had him since he was 3 and did his first boar cleaning (will likely go back bc I probably missed some) and I couldn’t believe I’ve been neglecting this part of his care for all these years. So glad you make these videos.
Just did a boar cleaning for my 5 boys and whoo boy that smell is funky alright.
I recommend wearing a surgical mask when ya clean them for those who have sensitive noses.
One of my pigs gets SO distressed during this, I have to stop and give him snacks, pet him, give him pep talks - today I even played Beethoven for him. 🤣 It’s a whole process.

Thank you for your videos! I had no idea I had to clean out my guinea’s pouch! He had a bit of seepage that smelt really bad and when I cleaned him out that was what the smell was. I have shared your video on Facebook as I think this is not something people realise when they have a boar. It was astonishing what had built up in there! Thank you so much for everything you do for piggies! They have my heart! My boy is more like a dog! He licks, cuddles up and lies down and has the run of the house! I would never not have one! A house is not a home without a piggie! P.s he’s an indoor pig x

Thanks for your advice. Our guinea pig Biscuit wasn't too bad but our skinny pig Conker was gummed up with white goo. You're right about the smell, we needed to call a priest for that unholy stench.

This was extremely helpful. I just got done boar cleaning my year old piggy for the first time and it was disgusting. I didn't know I had to do this but do plan to boar clean regularly.

I had a guineapig named Poco who died last year, and I had no idea that this cleaning was necessary. I feel so guilty that I never did this for him.
My great aunt had a parrot named Paco.
He could talk and he spoke both English and Spanish.
Basically, he'd sit on her shoulder and call her an asshole while she was eating until she shared.
So first time I ever heard of this was last night. My guinea pigs aren't happy. The one I've had for a year was super uncomfortable and stared at me like dad, we don't do this. My newer guinea pig was absolutely freaked, once I put him back in the cage him and my other guinea pig started talking. I imagine it went like:
Ring: what the hell bro, does he always do that?
Titan: nope, first time. Don't know what's gotten into the human. Sorry you came while he's on his weirdo shi
Ring: can't we do something about this, first my nails now my private. Can we revolt, or petition
Titan: nahh just take the treat afterwards, nothing we can do. Just wait until holidays, when he dresses us like humans for entertainment 🙄

I've only had females for 11 years, and I got my first boars a few days ago (they are only 12 weeks old). I know young boars often stay pretty clean for a while but how often would you recommend checking them once they are adults?
she said every 8 weeks in the video. I had boars in the past and never even knew you had to do this. I still don't even know if I can :-/
do baby boars need cleaning too, ours are only 2 months old, and I don’t think they would be happy with that.
@@guineapigstime511 ive checked my baby guinea and they are very clean. Im going to continue checking them. They seem to clean themselves. Im sure in the wild they would do the same and not have us humans fiddling with their bits all the time.
What exactly is the pocket for? If it’s not for pooping then what?
Great question ! I think that there is scent marking going on. You will see males walk very low to the ground , sway from side to side, and make a sort of rumbling sound.This is scent marking. (and boy it is stinkie!) A healthy pocket should just contain a sticky, stinky white substance that is soft and smooth (dont touch it without gloves)! If that smegma gets exposed to the air it will discolor and become hard. and we have to apply olive oil to keep it from sticking to the soft tissue of the pocket. Popular believe calls this pocket an "Anal Sac" However it may be very close to the anus it is a complete different part of a guinea pigs anatomy. I hope this helps.

I've had only boars for over 10 years and I'm a veteran sac cleaner,stink and all,lol! I've always used a swab w/mineral oil. Is that ok as well as olive oil? All my boys have hated this,although I don't blame them. I always try to reward with a treat a nd snuggles afterwards. Thanks for teaching such a necessary part of owning boars. Your vids are great!

Can guinea pigs get ringworm if not cleaned? My ace has ring worm around the butt area ring where the butt pouch is, I didn’t know it even existed but not I’m definitely cleaning it

hiya, I just had a look at one of my piggies weaners and it may be because it didn't come out all the way and I'm doing it wrong but it looks almost shrivelled and clumpy, unlike the ones in your videos, I did take out a piece of bedding but was unable check for anything else. He is not neutered and is about 1 and a half. please help me out I'm really worried
Saskia, have you done a video on sperm rods in boars? I pulled one out of Fergus today- however, he was very ill. he is in piggy heaven now with the help of my vet.i wondered if this only happens with sick piggies.
Hi Kaye - first of all I am so so sorry to hear about you losing your little boy, so sad and hugs for you. All males can get sperm rods in the urethra regardless of health status or age but it is unusual in boys under 4 months old. I hope this helps you

Look for a guinea pig savy groomer in your area. There’s a groomer in my area who has special services for male guinea pigs
You absolutely need to clean them. It becomes less gross the more you do it. It’s like having a baby. It’s gross but rewarding. I recommend putting a dab of essential oils on a bandana around your face and wearing gloves in a well ventilated area. It’s not the bad if you keep up with it.

That is a great question! You can kinda see how far the dirt went up the Q-tip and that will give you a good measure.
I have been doing that but I didn't see you put anything thing on the qtip. I always use a little mineral oil should I not?
Jillian Deollos You can use olive oil or mineral oil! We use olive oil when there’s stuff really stuck in there. :)
So sorry for this late reply Jillian. That pocket is usually pretty moist so you don't need anything though I often will use some olive oil when I finihsed cleaning it to wipe the whole area clean. Sometimes if the smegma was exposed to the air it will dry out and in that case you want to use some oil to soak and moisten the area. Mineral oil is fine, we use olive oil.

Far enough so you can just scoop out the smegma. And remember this is the perineum pocket, not the anus.
So What about wild guinea pigs? How do they deal with this issue or does it only occur in the domestic ones? (If only in the domestic ones, is the reason known?)
The wild ones have to just deal with it, at least thats my guess. But that's probably why wild guinea pigs lives are so short, among with other things
Jasmin wild pigs are much more physically active and have sex regularly. They use their parts naturally in the wild and not in captivity. sitting in a cage all day probably on your poop, especially if your owner doesn't clean well, will cause this too.
I just got my piggy from a pet store. He was not taken care of very well. And taming him has not been going well. He likes to bite! I wish he would tame down. :/

I believe there is a medicine called Lidocaine for animals, and at least it takes some of the discomfort away.

This seems gross to do this for the boys...but it seems that the females have ovarian cysts that are extremely common and are internal! Instead of a bit of boar “care” you can do externally to keep them healthy and happy. Thank you for this channel for helping me make better decisions for the “dream heard” I plan to have someday....

Do Females have sacs to clean? When I gave my first baths recently to my Females I washed Bums and Privates I noticed white sticky crusty things I pulled off. Washed well!! But I have never cleaned my Short Haired Female Piggies Ears or my 7 mos old Teddy Females Ears either. But I do rub All around and just inside with Cold Pressed Coconut Oil. Can we bath once a month? Or is that too much? I know it's weekly when treating a Fungus or Ring Worm?
If girls have crusties around their privates it may be because of urine leakage. At 7 month old the ears didn't yet get a chance to develop dry skin buildup in the ears. Max 4 times a year on the baths
Whoever , please blow your nose when you are filming, i know its so petty, but it's horrible to listen to constantly. I apologise for my pet peeve, to me it's the equivalent of nails being scrapped down a blackboard lol. I love these videos, they are so informative about the awesome little piggies, and you guys deserve to be acknowledged as true heroes, you are so much more worthy than people who use money and privilege to indulge themselves.

Younger piggies don't get too much buildup in there, but older piggies should have it done every few months. There are lots of great tutorials here on UA-cam, including this video. It's something you have to get used to, but it eventually becomes routine.
+Avery Magaña Why are they unable to clean themselves? Is it something humans bred into domestic guinea pigs? It always seems so odd when animals need such intensive procedures as a routine thing. Is it a side effect of domestication?

Not daily - I recommend taking a peek every 8 weeks or so and empty only if needed

Hi, I have a 7 month old boar I noticed he had a small impaction a few weeks ago. Now I check him daily and he has pine bedding stuck in his anal cavity. Sometimes it is sticky. I clean it out. My question is, Is this normal and should I be cleaning and checking daily or is it ok to let it be for a while. Thanks in advance for the reply and thanks for the videos they have helped me.

Do you have any tips for boars that are reluctant to stick out their penis? I've tried warm coconut oil, warm water, making my hands smell like my sows..but he will only poke it out maybe 2 times out of 10! I've never had a boar so reluctant to let me check his bits! He has issues with smegma build ups so I try to be persistent with him but some days it just seems to be impossible.
Hi!!! Well he is not going to cooperate as I am yet to meet a piggie that likes this little procedure. Don't use oil at the time you are trying to coax it out as it the task will not become easier with slippery oil. You start right above the penis and press down while pulling the skin down. Some are tougher to do than others. If you are local then come on by and we can help you with him. Saskia
Thanks! I don't have much success without the oil either to be honest haha but I'll keep trying, I'd love to bring him down but unfortunately I'm in the UK. I'm thinking of taking him down to see our vet to have a full clean and just make sure there is no physical reason it won't come out, especially as when we got him 2 years ago he came with his 'brother' ... it took 6 weeks to realise she was a sow but he never managed to get her pregnant luckily so it does make me wonder if there's actually something stopping it from popping out sometimes.

While I do understand the need to clean him, I don't understand why you use no pain killers, or even sedate him because it looks like it hurts him when you stick that Q-tip in there.
