The Messsage is in part for Miyazaki's son. The main character refused to take his elderly relative's legacy, like Goro Miyazaki decided not to follow his father's tradition. The film is Hayao Miyazaki's message to his son, saying he understands and loves his son. Hayao almost insults himself, by claiming that all he does all day is rearrange blocks and that that controls imaginary worlds.

That’s my problem with the movie. I understand the meta nature of the message, but I don’t think it works well or is even explained too well without the context of Miyazaki and his son’s relationship

I loved Mahito as a character because he felt withdrawn, depressed and pushing himself towards extremes because of his trauma. I related to it since that felt like who I was at that age, and I think a lot of boys have a similar situation where they don't know how to deal with these emotions and it becomes pent up frustration and lashing out. It felt very rare to see a character like that.

I felt like the main theme wasn’t mortality but the passage of time and our inability to control it. Even at the end when Mahito tells Himi, his mom, not to enter the world where she would end up dying, he’s able to accept that it is out of his hands to save her.
It also ran as a semi-autobiography of Miyazaki’s life. My theory is that the towerkeeper/great-uncle is actually Miyazaki himself. He’s an older man who dedicated his life to creating multiple worlds, struggling to find the balance of good and bad, and is now ready to pass on this responsibility. It describes Miyazaki almost perfectly, so I would not be surprised if he did base this character, if not Mahito, on himself.

I agree that the uncle is Miyazaki but I think this movie is actually him reckoning with his legacy and relationship with the Ghibli brand, as well as him telling the next generation to live a worthy life not based on what's expected of them by previous generations.

When the Heron fricken talked the first time, his reaction was just so stupid. He just threw a pillow and in the most stoic face just said, "Ugh, get out".

I saw the film. I’m Japanese, I’m in Japan, and I’ve probably seen all Miyazaki films. Few things I’d like to mention:
1) There was ZERO advertisement for this film in Japan. There was no preview nor TV commercials, nobody knew the plot nor who the voice actors were. Obviously they are taking a different approach for the foreign market.
2) The fact that the main protagonist is a boy, must suggest that it’s about Miyazaki himself. IMHO.
3) I saw so many elements from the other films and his Nausicaa comic book which I love. I really think that this is a culmination of his work and it should be viewed as such. (But may be hMiyazaki doesn’t want you to.)
If I can, I will definitely go see it again because I’m sure I will discover new things next time.
Hearing the Nausicaa manga has echoes in this film excites me, that book is his opus.
I live in Paris, there are commercial posters everywhere in the metro. I've seen the movie two days ago, I thought it was brilliant.

The entire movie is a homage to all Ghibli movies. You find elements of all his other movies in it and even Ghibli movies he didn't work on, like Grave of the Fireflies. I agree, it is the most Miyazaki movie yet. A crazy fever dream.
Bold move by Miyazaki to introduce the Minions into his world, but it really added a lot of wacky zaniness to the movie

It took me a full day of thinking about it afterwards to even start to click with what he was going for, but the longer I've thought on it the more I've appreciated exactly why it was executed the way it was. I hate telling people "oh watch it again you just didn't get it the first time" since it feels so elitist to do so but if you have the time I would definitely recommend giving it a second go-around. I've always enjoyed Wes' films more on the rewatch

Finally watched it today. This is definitely an amalgamation of Miyazaki’s career in all the right ways. If Spirited Away was the opus, Boy and the Heron is the swan song. The ideas the movie presents might seem scattershot to some but to me, it’s the gold medal proving how legendary of a creator Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are.
To me it is a story of passing his worlds onto his audience as in the film the tower master reminds me of Miyazaki and the idea that he knows that he cant create for much longer (symbolized by him no longer being able to hold up the prices in the tower) and wanting to know someone else would be there to tend his world
I also see the parakeets as a bit of a parrelel to his almost to devoted fans who when they see him trying to hand things off panic

@@alexanderbash1272 Woah, I love the thought of parakeets being intense fans. They love their world, they want it to keep going and are afraid of what it would mean to be without it. But they are overzealous, they attack any outsiders who enter and might want to change things. And when the world is gone and they are forced out, they don't die or disappear; they are transformed and keep going. If Granduncle is Miyazaki saying he is at peace with the thought of Studio Ghibli stopping when he passes, he is also reassuring his fans that they will be ok without him. And that he def thinks they're a little weird.

Not me almost crying at the theater tonight when I noticed all the little pieces of the other movies. A lot of Howl & Spirited away. The color changing panel on the tops of doors in the tower, the room that looked so similar to sophies house/hat shop, the warawara like the soot sprites, the men they made look similar to the witch of the wastes glob men, the shooting stars. So many more. Chef’s kiss😭
I do also feel like this has to be his last film, as the vibe throughout the whole movie just gives off this sense of finality. Even if the president of Ghibli said Miyazaki is creating something new rn, he has done many short films in the past, so maybe this is just one of those. And I don’t really consider this a spoiler, but if you don’t wanna know anything then skip this comment, but the final shot of the film does feel like he’s asking us to fill this image with our own story, like he’s asking us to take the paint brush this time, and use it to create our own world, like he has done for us many times throughout the years. Very simple but effective final shot for me. Definitely one of Miyazaki’s best!
I’m pretty sure studio ghibli was just acquired by nippon tv, and miyazaki is planning to make more movies. We’ll just have to wait and see.

@@Rabaikal I don’t think he wants to retire. that’s my point, he chose to sign a new deal because he wants to continue making more films. Ever since they finished the Boy and the Heron he’s still been coming into the office writing down ideas and moving forward with his work. Some people are so enveloped in their passion they really don’t ever want to retire. Don’t confuse him being unable to retire with him not wanting to retire, ghibli is a capital generating powerhouse, he could have retired probably multiple films ago, but whenever he tries he’s always drawn back to the studio. Not sure if we will 100% get another film but staffers working for ghibli have confirmed he’s been coming into the office writing down ideas for his next film.

This movie felt like a love letter or goodbye to Miyazaki’s films. So many times I felt like I saw stuff that felt like it came from the other ghibli films, and when it ends thats the goodbye

I saw it in Japan with someone who speaks Japanese and we were talking about it after and I was surprised that I understood what the movie was about very well. It definitely helps that when you can't understand the language you focus on the visual storytelling much more

@@nggyunglydngraady I watched it yesterday with my 13 year old sister and even she thought the movie was a bit too extra at times haha, there's some scenes with blood and guts and such so I'd tell you to save this one for later if possible, maybe you can watch it first and judge for yourself 🙈 just my two cents!

I just watched it in English and the first quarter of the movie where he was mostly silent, the visuals and animation really carried to let you understand the feelings and what was going on.

I saw you at the screening and I’m glad you liked it! I’m not very fluent in Studio Ghibli nor would I say Miyazaki’s movies are a pillar of who I am as a cinephile/animation connoisseur but I enjoyed The Boy and The Heron quite a bit
Watching this movie the day it came out in japan in imax was insane.
“If your not a Miyazaki fan I don’t think you’re gonna like this movie” I felt that… I can appreciate the story but felt like I couldn’t really grasp it.
I watched this film last night and was absolutely captivated. It effortlessly secures a spot in my top three Studio Ghibli films. While it bears the unmistakable imprint of Miyazaki's genius, it manages to carve out its own unique identity. "The Boy and the Heron" unfolds like a visual symphony, where elements and motifs seamlessly weave in and out of the narrative, a testament to the mastery of storytelling. The film's emotional depth, conveyed through rich symbolism, had me teetering on the brink of tears multiple times.
I cried cried cried in the theater as the final scenes played out, from not only the breathtaking animation. I cried because this felt like a goodbye. Even if this isn't his final, this was his finale. A display of all of his work and an extended hand encouraging us as the viewer to keep it alive. It was beautiful. What an honor to be alive at the same time as this director to experience these tiny windows into his wonder filled mind.
I’m very embarrassed to call myself a fan of movies having never seen a Miyazaki film before, but I just got out of a showing for this, and I plan to watch as many of his movies as I can on the near future.
I can’t pinpoint why exactly I never have before. Probably just a lack of motivation because of how amazing and special everyone says his work is.
This movie is just so special. Being able to sit down in a theater and get a movie with so much imagination is a treat and I can’t wait until my local theater has another Ghibli marathon so I can go see them all in a theater.
If you haven't gotten around to it yet, I'd suggest starting with howl's moving castle. Miyazaki's works have a pretty wide range between weird as hell fever dreams and *almost* slice of life feeling. Howl's is on the weirder side so it's a good transition from the boy and the heron (which is, I think, pretty easily the weirdest one in his filmography)
On the more slice of life end, the first that comes to mind is The Wind Rises. No magic or anything, it's basically a biography of a guy that designs fighter planes for Mitsubishi in WWII.
Those 3 movies are all very war related, pretty heavy handed with it. If that gets tiring then I'd suggest Kiki's Delivery Service. It's my personal favorite of them all.
You know what the best part is? They're virtually all that good. Every single one hits some part of the core of the human condition and is made masterfully to boot
This, Poor Things, and The Holdovers are the 3 remaining movies this year I’m looking forward to the most.

Just saw this in IMAX. I was so much happier with it than I expected. I also had the same thought before watching this video just now: that this is the perfect final movie for him to make. So very Miyazaki. And probably his most surreal.
Watched it in Japan a few weeks back and it was such a wonderful experience. Almost understanding nothing from the dialogue and having to experience the story through the films imagery was such a beautiful experience, especially with this kind of animation ^^
I watched it yesterday... I'm a huge fan of Miyazaki and I really didn't like this movie. Sure, the worldbuilding is amazing and the animation is on another level... but I'm the kind of person that needs a good story that goes with all of that. And, to be fair, there wasn't even a story to begin with. It's just a bunch of stuff happening (yes, everything was beautiful), but it's just that. Nothing really happened and there was no moral to the story, which is weird in a Miyazaki's movie. I don't know, maybe I need a rewatch, but I just can say that I left the theatre feeling underwhelmed. Can't say for the rest of you, but I feel I won't be the only one.

I feel like this one is the kind of film that you get something new whenever you rewatch it. It's one of the films with many layers in it that a single viewing won't do it justice and the kind of film that the director does not want to impress its audience, instead he just wants to tell the story just as he wants it. Can't wait for this!

I just saw it in theater yesterday and honestly i was not really super into it. I see the whole autobiographical dimension (his childhood in rural Japan with his sick mother, the notion of legacy etc) but it felt a bit forced and over explained while others aspects felt (to me) a bit to random. I didn't quite find a balance between all the elements maybe due to the main protagonist who was not here to bring this balance and felt a bit transported from a place to another.
The visuals are stunning but not really imaginative and i felt a bit bored at some points
I plan to watch it again, but for me it's definetly not his best (and i respect your opinion if this is the case for you)

This sounds very exciting to me. I usually like the later works of many artist the most, the point when there is nothing to prove and the work feels the most like them.
It is basically Miyazaki Hayao unhinged, telling the world, this is what I have done, this is my legacy, and Goro will not take over me. There is no one in my bloodline who is worthy. (And then, he goes on to sell Studio Ghibli away to Nippon TV.)
I live in Japan, so I was very excited to see it so early. It would have been neat to see it with subtitles (since I am still years from fluent), but I went with my friend who has pretty good Japanese. All I knew going into this movie was that my other friend said “I read the book (the Japanese title comes from a book called how do you live) and the book has no birds”. I also saw it before any trailer had come out and wasn’t sure if it would be more like a whisper of the heart or like spirited away. All I can say is I have never whispered “what?!” so much during a movie in my life. It was quite the trip and I look forward to seeing it again in a year or so when my Japanese has improved (or if I can find it here with subtitles)! Definitely worth the price of a Japanese theater!
I was studying in Hokkaido when the movie came out and had been studying Japanese for 2 years beforehand, so I managed to understand almost everything in the movie, and honestly there isn't *that* much narrative meat that you don't get from just enjoying it on a basic level. It excels in its visual storytelling more than its dialogue.

Saw this yesterday and my god, is the animation absolutely gorgeous. Your review is pretty spot on and amongst the plethora of themes explored or slightly touched upon, is that sense of Miyazaki having approached it as his swan song. I'm very interested to see how the dialogue will (eventually) be translated via the English dub, as I found the subtitles a bit dry and perhaps lacking the full intent of the script. Definitely a film I will revisit numerous times in the future to indulge in that world Miyazaki built and attempt to further get my head around the messages conveyed within.
The film aside, I fully believe Miyazaki will only been retired once he's passed, and even then can we be so sure?

This excites me tremendously. I love his works that go more deep. Ponyo is the only film of his I never really connected with. The Wind Rises was really good but lacked a lot of the fantasy he always puts in his films. I'm so excited for another one where he goes deep, tackles difficult things and just makes a weird thought provoking film.

This movie sounds like The Irishman for Scorsese. A retrospective to their careers and their contributions to the genre
I can’t wait for this movie to come out alongside Godzilla Minus One.
The trailer gave me vibes of Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle, which happen to be my favorite Miyazaki movies, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this in theaters.
I just saw it and i'm still confused 😄 I often felt this way with Miyazaki san's movie and after a while it can deeply influence my own vision of my life and the world. I saw and felt many familiar things but for now it is still a bit blurry on the whole. And i like it !
I think you can see it as a story about grief and finding comfort in the past of a love one even if you didn’t pass a long time with them. Wind has a huge meaning for Miyazaki since his father was working in the war plane industry like the father of the main character of his movie. I feel like this movie may not be made to be understood by the people but only to a few persons very close to Miyazaki.

Miyazaki always has metaphors hidden is his movies and I think this film was confusing even for me. I think he intentionally did this because Miyazaki was really expressing his deepest emotions. Densetsu Media did a great video essay of this, but basically the great uncle is Miyazaki. The great uncle created this beautiful and magical world, while trying to please hungry consumers (birds) but could not find an heir. The 13 blocks represents the 13 films he created. I think Miyazaki regretted not finding an heir to take over Ghibli. He wanted his son to take over but is acknowledging that it’s ok.

i saw it at tiff and it is in fact very good and very reminiscent of his other films, kinda like elements from them all put together into a very yummy cake. it had creepiness, adorable little creatures and lots of adventure :)
I’m native Japanese speaker, my honest opinion on the movie is, really hard to understand the story but it meant to be like this. so I hate to say it but I thought the story wasn’t super inspiring, however it was a gorgeous 2 hours experience because in japan they didn’t make any promotions, trailers, TV commercials. Movie felt similar way to Shin Evangelion because obviously Miyazaki threw his elements in there that we don’t even understand what those are, but that’s okay if you watch it as seeing arts. I also think the majority of people not gonna like the movie as much as his predecessors. But again, the movie is great, one of his best work.
Great review! You give excellent insight into the movie without any major reveals. (Not easy to do!) One problem...now I really can't wait to see it! Seriously though- looking forward to beautiful animation and hopefully more stunning flying animation- a favorite of Miyazaki's and mine.
Just saw the movie and I both love it and don’t haha. Most of the movie has so much magic and the parakeets and warawara are adorable. It also explored a lot of great themes! But I feel like the ponderous pacing of the first act mean that we have hardly any time to explore the new world and especially for the main character to grapple with the reveals like ***(see bottom)***. Then, like a lot of Ghibli movies, it just ends. So yeah, a lot of magic, but the pacing really makes it so we don’t see how that magic effects the main character.
*** Himi being his mother is not addressed until they are parting, and by that point they are just like “oh yeah I know you’re my mother/son, but you have to go”… SO unsatisfying!
I cried when I found out another movie was being made, not only that but he was directing it. Just from the trailer it feels so magical and a combination of previous films he has made that you can even pick out from the trailer. Such as spirited away, howls moving castle, grave of the fireflies, wind rises, etc. Very excited to see it in december 100% going to cry like a baby during it and after.

I’m so happy this is gonna be my very first Ghibli experience in cinema. Pattinson behind the voice of the Heron is definitely a welcome surprise and Welcome back to Cristian Bale to Ghibli.
This was my first Ghibli movie, and I’ve just assumed that they were all this strange. Are they not? It was so bizarre, but unbelievably enjoyable.

The premise reminds me a lot of the game Ni no Kuni (which Ghibli were involved in!), which is one of my favourite games. And I'm very excited to see this one, you can see a LOT of Miyazaki's other films in the trailer alone!
Movie heavily reminds me of Pans Labyrinth (Labyrinth of the Faun). Just an amazing movie that shows what happens when fantasy and trauma clash together.
When this film is out, I would LOVE a updated spoiler version of this review cause I'm curious what cons you have with this movie to not give it a 5/5.

For me, the movie feels like a dream, the beautiful, the wackiness and the scariest, and that's what a dream does. And then at the end of the movie, you feel like you woke up from your dream, kinda like spirit away but it isn't very big, but it's quite interesting
After having just seen it for the first time last week, I have to say that my impression was ... so-so. I agree with others that it feels much less like a final film of a legendary career than The Wind Rises. I loved some of the fantasy aspects and the neat mix of creepiness and whimsy. But especially in the second half it felt like an imitation of a Ghibli movie at parts. Like that one Makoto Shinkai film where "totally not the robot from Laputa" shows up. I think I'll have to see it a few more times before I can really pinpoint what I think about it
I agree. I wonder if this is truly Miyazaki in his purest form or if producers kept pushing for more ghibli esque moments. It did feel like a greatest hits type of thing which seems odd after such a strong opening.
But he is known for first coming up with key moments and then stringing them together, maybe he just went a bit overboard with the amount.
I didnt like it, It just didnt speak to me, I understand it is a multilayered metaphor filled movie with autobiographical elements, and he is prob both the boy and the Uncle and the birds are empty consumers just parroting what they see and hear etc etc, but it just didn’t reach me emotionally
I totally agree that this is the first one since Spirited Away that has really given me that same feeling.

I saw it at TIFF this Saturday and everyone I went with agreed that it was beautifully animated, however plot wise it was a LOT lmao.

This movie is doing very well at the box office. It made 3 million while Wish has made 1 million. It has blown Disney away. Ha! Take that Disney.

Saw it in imax. First half was a bit boring and slow. 2nd half got into the fantasy and magic more but didn't feel as magical and exciting like spirited away, castle in tbe sky and howls moving castle. This one was more about the beginning, middle, and end of life being all intertwined in a world. Some parts are confusing because there's too much things going on. Probably his most comedic film, but still about the war theme and destruction. Gave it a 6.5/10.
I won’t be watching this video out of wanting to go into this movie as blind as possible. Just letting you know many people will probably do the same so don’t be discouraged if this video performs poorly :)
He is developed, he does as his names state; he is the sincere one. His actions and words can be cold and blunt but its genuine. as he slowly warms and opens up and accepts his new mother you see his sincerese is not just pain but now has accepted reality and his new life with his new family.

i love how self referential it is as film like it layers with his other works so well.
I def do not recommend to take someone with you who never seen any Miyazaki movie to see this one first. It is not going to make them a fan. As a fan, i really liked it, but my sis was super confused the full time.
If I were Miyazaki, announcing my last movie would be incredibly difficult.
1:41 YES!!! this is what i've been saying! Ghibli movies are amazing, but only few matchup to the insane fantastical hypnotic world building of spirited away or howl's moving castle. I haven't seen this movie yet, but you making this comparison makes me SOOO excited to see it, because that's my favorite thing about the ghibli movies.

Saw it this past Saturday and holy smokes i loved it
I have to be honest. I am no diehard Ghibli fan, I watched a couple and didn't particularly care for spirited away, and this movie I felt was very similar to that. Things just happen and the story takes a back seat to themes. So really it's a pretty abstract movie.
Half way through the movie I was pretty frustrated because I could not hang on for the ride and by the end I felt not much was answered...
I really hope the movie keeps the same slow pace vibe that other ghibli movies have. Like where there are entire minutes of animation dedicated to calmly looking at the scenery of the world while you process everything that just happened to the main character. Feel like too many new films are opting for two hours of non-stop action leaving little time to actually breath and process the events

I watched it with my sister. She said she was dissapointed, but i found that she was getting caught up in the details (she was most angry about the whole time paradox)

So so excited for this. I don't think it'll be his last purely because he's retired like six times now lol.
I cried when I saw the trailer. And I found out today that this is actually his story. He put so much of himself into this. I know it's a joke about him coming back evey now and again from his retirement. But this may actually be his last story. I didn't even see the whole movie but I still felt so much emotions from it
I watched it opening weekend in Japan and i think in that moment I peaked.
As someone who knew nothing about the film and my only prior knowledge of two ghibli films before...needless to say I was confused during the last half of the movie. I wish I had more context about what type of story this was supposed to be before I saw it, because after looking up more about it I can really appreciate the stuff that I didn't understand.

I found myself feeling for Mahito for the entirety of the movie. He was driven by grief and anger, but he had this goodness inside him. He was angry at the pelican for eating the warawara, but still burried the bird when it died; he, as another character said, thought he would have been better off without Natsuko, but still went to save her. I just think he was a great character, one you can respect and empathize with.
