  • I normally wouldnt make a video like this but once I saw 3 Transistors being used to look as if they are actually being used but are not I was BLOWN AWAY! That is flat out deception. Making a circuit look as if it is doing something you advertise it to do only to not be doing at the very least part of what it is advertised to be doing.

    Can you suggest an alternative filter? I have a mobile radio with a power supply as a base station. I get a load buzzing on my radio when my HVAC blower comes on. I have connected the radio to a battery to bypass any possible AC noise and still get the buzzing.

    I’m glad you made that video because I almost clicked by now on one of these piles even though I kind of figured it may be a crock. I bought a 100 amp power max power supply and it runs my amplifiers just fine but it’s so noisy I can’t hear anything so it’s pretty much worthless. I even tried running my radio on a small Astron I can turn the power max on across the room with it not even connected to anything and the radio still picks it up so I figured it was coming through the antenna and I was going to try one of these I’m glad I didn’t. Thanks!

    Back in the days when FM Radio was still a thing respectful receivers had an option to switch between Narrow and wide if a station was to far or to close. They would put a label "Local" on top of it. This is basically it, just cap signal above a certain floor if its to loud or over-modulating. The word "Clipping" in a way refers to that. Its ideal for truckers that don't wanna mess with squelch all the time. Clipping also refers to peaks of sinus wave forms above maximum levels, sound distorted. So it is not completely bogus but has a real application to it.

    It's a noise canceling unit it cancels everything, so you don't hear anything. Thank you very much for the video I was thinking about buying one but I always look at reviews first! and caught your review Thank You.

    Through testing mine, I have found that the RF gain def cuts more signal then the device does. The diodes cut the noise very well but allows more signal through then just using the RF gain.

    This video was helpful but moreso the demo and some of the useful comments below. The device is actually useful for certain things, its just horribly misunderstood due to the misleading labels/packaging/instructions. If they labeled it more as what it honestly is and does maybe it wouldn't have such a bad rap.
    The transistors DO serve a function even without the middle leg being connected and not used in the traditional way.
    The lightbulb moment for me was when some of the comments people said "adds gain control to a radio". This is the key. If you have a nice radio that already has gain control then yes, this really doesn't do much for you. However, if you have a cheaper radio that has only squelch and no RF gain adjustment, this device is actually potentially useful.
    It also matters what your use case is. It's probably not super useful for skip/DX work, but if you are doing local comms and you are getting a lot of static that is really where this device shines.
    I did a test from my house's base station to my mobile unit in my car, which is just a President-brand Bill FCC radio and a standard 2' mag mount antenna. The ANL/NB/Hi-Cut of the P. Bill radio is better than others that don't have it but there is still a ton of static when squelch is broken or turned down, since that radio doesn't have RF gain control. Between base and mobile I could go about 4 miles before there was so much static I could not make out the person talking at my base station anymore. Then I added this "noise clipper". The device successfully eliminated a huge portion of the static, and I was able to hear my base station out to 6 miles and everywhere in-between sounded MUCH better because there was a lot less static in the background. I hate listening to static, this thing killed the static and ultimately did increase my effective range of hearing my base so I would call that a win.
    So, if you have a mid-tier or cheap radio without gain control and you are having issues with a lot of static in your car, this might actually help.
    I tried it on my base station as well and that was the same as turning the gain up and down on my radio (my base station has gain control so, not much point for this device there).
    I have a lot of cheap radios I can make more useful and more pleasant to listen to with this device. It's too spendy for what's inside but I just ordered one and then reverse-engineered it by opening it up and getting the part numbers. Should be able to build about a dozen of them for $30 worth of parts. But if you need one and can find it reasonably priced it's worth it to just buy it I'd say.
    One more note, it added maybe 0.1 to my SWR and reduced my output by maybe a quarter of a watt on barefoot stock radios. Totally worth it to hear way less static on a cheap radio. Just not helpful for long-range contacts.

      Update I bought a second one, I am so happy with the noise/static reduction this gives my President Electronics "Bill FCC" radio in my old car, and that radio already has ANL+NB+Hi-Cut but it does not have variable RF gain control, this box gives me that and was the final nail in the coffin for static in my car. I am still able to talk clearly (much more clearly) with contacts 6 miles away thanks to this device.

  • @edwinklaver
    @edwinklaver 7 років тому

    I hope you didn't pay too much for that box lol! Deceptive is the word you are looking for. Sorry you got bit by the con artist! I am grateful you made the video, it may keep others for buying one.

  • @TheTemporalAnomaly

    Its even worse than you think, because when you transmit, the tx signal is going through two back to back diodes! This will rapidly turn the diodes on and off at the tx frequency. This is a harmonic generating device! For example, if you tx at say 27.185 this box will generate harmonics (extra frequencies, not wanted), at 54.370 (2nd harmonic), 81.555 (3rd harmonic). There will also be weaker 4th 5th 6th harmonics also generated. If this device was officially inspected, it would never have been allowed to market.

  • @buckaroobonsi555
    @buckaroobonsi555 7 років тому

    I think the diodes are there to allow the transmit power to leave and to act as resistors to incoming signals. Transistors have some of the properties of a resistor, diode and capacitor depending on how much current and voltage is passing through them even when they are not turned on. We have yet to build a device that is invisible to the signal in all ways so even passively with out the bypass something is happening to every signal when ever it flows through any part even a twisted pair of wires acts like a cap. and has some resistance. That said I have no idea what those 3 transistors that can not be turned on could possible be doing to the signal that would be of any benefit at all????
    It is funny because this device is not clipping the signal like clipping diodes would than being feed into an active amplifier to boost the clipped rf signal back up. So this device is not "clipping" it is not "amplifying" either. It is attenuating the signal but it is doing it with no real selectivity. Ideally you would want to take the raw rf and process it it by clipping it boosting it transforming it with a 455Mhz crystal into audio band pass filtering audio compressing it passing through a 455Mhz crystal filter and such to transform it back into RF and send it into the radio where the would be treated just as if it had come in from the antenna raw and be processed and sent to audio/pa stage and then to your speaker. You would need a ic's, lots of film caps some a crystal filter and a few common parts and most important some power! LOL Just some rough thoughts though....It would be exactly like doing speech processing for transmitt but in reverse. If the board was designed right and implemented correctly it could be used on TX and RX both and would switch with the PTT just like incoming audio turns on and off with TX via the PTT.
    You would have to figure out which spot in a radio to best pick up the audio and inject the audio for the best fiedelity as in which stage of the audio chain you wanted to use. I ams ure someone smarter than me could figure out how to use the stock AGC too so you would not be fussing with gain and compression levels and such when switching between tx and rx so you would never be distorted.

  • @Jimmy6ification
    @Jimmy6ification 7 років тому

    I was actually building attenuators, built on the same principal 20 years ago. Some called these filters, and I disagree. Somebody showed me one, but it was encased in epoxy, and I was unable to acquire one tear it apart. I played with different tuned coils, capacitors, and circuit designs to figure out the best way to build, and have them reproducible. This should be classified as a passive circuit, although, it is active on transmit. Basically, the activity is just the diodes allowing the transmitted power to bypass. As we know, no part is perfect. There is no such thing as a perfect diode, they have a small amount of capacitance. This is what I believe would allow the RX signal to pass even though the diodes didn't have enough voltage to forward conduct. This parasitic capacitance could be reduced even further, by hooking two sets of diodes in series. Hence, even weaker RX. The other circuit path, should be to allow even more RX through. Just instead of using the pure stray capacitance, they use 3 transistors instead. Did you know a transistor can be tested as two diodes with a common lead? It probably did the trick for the intended goal. It always amazed me that these diodes would work, considering the wattage output, verses the rating of these small signal diodes, which I doubt are designed for transmitted RF energy. imgur.com/a/3uGZ6 Picture on what I called the Terminator Noise Attenuator.

      yes the transistors are being used as diodes and for the capacitance I'd say. "base" leads are cut off, with the emitters and collectors being used. they are using lawyer wording about the amplification, it's reducing the overall signal, including the noise, in theory a noisy high level signal should be cleaner for the receiver front-end and filters to amplify. best for short range mobile to mobile/base usage where industrial noise is terrible.

    seems more like an attenuator than a noise eleminator. the only way I see noise being eliminated is a digital signal processor. and that only happens in a radio. not from a tag along accessory..

    diodes have a turn on voltage. Unless the incoming signal reaches around .6 to .7 volts it will act as a resistor. ie attenuator. Unless your direction finding, it's a complete waist of money.

      LMAO!!!!! I had a feeling that would be the first comment i saw!!!!!! Be patient Ramart106, great Techs are
      really hard to find, i miss the one i had, he rocked, and would explain everything to me, Mr. Gatekeeper really
      reminds me of him, i lost track of that duckplucker, and i miss hangin in his basement shop with him, might be
      why i enjoy Mr. Gatekeeper's videos so much. I also just lost my Dad, he got me into radio, we had projects on the bench we never got to, he was also my best friend and mentor. I'm really pretty destroyed still, and these videos are about the only thing i even enjoy, i think it reminds me of fixing stuff with him too. I have an old V-Mod that we were going to fix, ab/c bias, and upgrade the power leads, never got around to it because we were to busy, i regret that because times around the bench with him are some of my best memory's. When i can, i think i might send Mr. Gatekeeper that old V-Mod to do those things to it, just to have the experience of hanging with him while he does his thing, i like the one he did for another gentlemen out here, and Dad and i were going to do all those things anyway.
      I don't care who long it takes him, or much about cost, just as long as he makes his normal video after, and i don't even care how much he leans on it neither, or demo's the heck out of, i really just like the videos that much.
      Mr. Gatekeeper takes it to a higher level with his boxes and repairs in my honest opinion, his work is a thing of
      beauty and art.
      .
      Sorry, this conversation ain't really none of my business, it's between you and Mr. Gatekeeper, i just butted in to
      say it might not seem like it, but his videos really do mean a lot to some, they do for me for sure. I do remember waiting to get stuff back and being where your at Ramart106, like i said, i thought i would see a comment like yours brother, i have been there too. I actually miss those days. 73's and take care, time to get my knees in the breeze......

    Its just a basic signal clipper used in any signal even audio. It is dimply clipping the rf off at the forward bias voltage of the string of diodes. . Its a 2 stage clipping /attenuator circuit. In audio they use fets as a diode to clip audio signals. Its a way to protect your front end of a radio from close high power radios like at key down. Its useful to protect your rx at a comp. but if they are fets they are being used as a diode and they will clip at a different voltage then the standard .6 volts of a diode. But what a rip off product.
