  • One of the things that’s drawn me to making my own tombstones is just how unique and personal you can make them, and this project is a prime example. I recently saw a photo of a broken tombstone that had to be stabilized with the help of some metal bands and tabs. I thought it was really interesting and would be a nice addition to our aging cemetery display. So in this video, I'll show you how to make one for yourself.

      @@heartsongdjs the version I sell comes with a screw on collar. If you’re making your own, you could use super glue or epoxy to mount the acrylic.

    Get closer with the spray paint and LET it dissolve the surface. You can go light or heavy and get different depths of "carving". Let the solvent work for you. Done right it can look like sandblasted letters or deep cast letters. Love the repaired tombstone! One last thing. Marble and granite stones will get "gritty" as they age. Slate tombstones stay very smooth and make for great rubbings. Even after hundreds of years.

    Love the tip about using the watered down paint to fill in the letters. That sounds WAY easier. Very smart! Thanks!

    Jimmy Diresta recently restored a tombstone on his property that needed a metal frame to hold the broken pieces together. Cool to see two of my favorite makers doing similar projects right around the same time.

    I realy love this idea! Realy cool what inspiration you can find in real life. This is giving me Frankenstein monster ideas too. Like a tombstone of different shades and names put together. Theor is a lot of story telling that can be done with this. I alredy have an idea of a Frankenstein monster/Lurch type crypt keeper that this would be amazing for

    Great build idea! Rather than making the Tombstone from scratch you could use a decent store bought tombstone and do the same process essentially, if you don't have the time/energy/materials to do it from scratch.

    Looks awesome! I've never seen a fractured tombstone held together with metal bands. Love the look. I'd love to see how you bore out the bottoms of your tombstones to add in the PVC for the rebar. Do you drill them out with a forstner bit? Thanks for sharing.

    Hmmmm... paintable caulking? never thought about it, i had only seen or heard people use wood putty, spackling ( for some reason the paint always bubbles when i use it :/ ) and some other glues, i may switch to using caulking now, i did a tombstone ( video coming tomorrow ) where i pressed the Great Stuff' Foam into the cracks and let it dry, i used an exacto knife to carefully cut away most then finish sanding it smooth, i found that works but is far messier, how hard is it to sand caulking? i HATE those seams in the foam, if you dont seal them hard they'll re-open up and show through your paint and man that destroys a good tombstone, i appreciate these videos for tips so much!

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  8 місяців тому

      You can’t sand caulking, but you shouldn’t need to if you’ve applied it smoothly and paint over it.
