DIY Broken Tombstone Prop for

- One of the things that’s drawn me to making my own tombstones is just how unique and personal you can make them, and this project is a prime example. I recently saw a photo of a broken tombstone that had to be stabilized with the help of some metal bands and tabs. I thought it was really interesting and would be a nice addition to our aging cemetery display. So in this video, I'll show you how to make one for yourself.

Dang, when you said "dramatic reenactment" I was hoping for a Mrs. Van Oaks cameo.
Mrs. VanOaks was hoping for a cameo too. 🤣
Great video AS USUAL 😁😁
What is the best way to attach the clear acrylic to your Dremel?
I know, right?!? They’re always so jaunty and fun! 😄
@@heartsongdjs the version I sell comes with a screw on collar. If you’re making your own, you could use super glue or epoxy to mount the acrylic.

Thanks Derrick!
Get closer with the spray paint and LET it dissolve the surface. You can go light or heavy and get different depths of "carving". Let the solvent work for you. Done right it can look like sandblasted letters or deep cast letters. Love the repaired tombstone! One last thing. Marble and granite stones will get "gritty" as they age. Slate tombstones stay very smooth and make for great rubbings. Even after hundreds of years.
Well done. I like to mix a little sawdust with my moss paint to add a bit of texture.
Great tip!
Love the tip about using the watered down paint to fill in the letters. That sounds WAY easier. Very smart! Thanks!
Next level: ANIMATED breaking tomb stone!
Love how this tombstone came out with the metal banding!! Excellent build!
Its been decades since I redid my graveyard. These methods have stepped up my game in ways I'd never used or produced. Having a great time.
Jimmy Diresta recently restored a tombstone on his property that needed a metal frame to hold the broken pieces together. Cool to see two of my favorite makers doing similar projects right around the same time.
Cool! I’ll have to check it out.
I realy love this idea! Realy cool what inspiration you can find in real life. This is giving me Frankenstein monster ideas too. Like a tombstone of different shades and names put together. Theor is a lot of story telling that can be done with this. I alredy have an idea of a Frankenstein monster/Lurch type crypt keeper that this would be amazing for
I used the leftovers to make one that is crumbled down and the bits hanging at the base and all.... It added some old creepy to my grave yard!
What a great way to update old stones too! I have contemplated making a mortsafe-a cage over the grave to prevent body theft. Is this something you've considered making for the channel?
It looks so realistic in the end
Fantastic build!!! We are dying to make some new Tom stones for our yard, this was perfect timing!
This is DEFINITELY one I'll be trying.
As always, you never fail to deliver. I've made tombstones before but never did I try this idea. Love it! Thanks again for your hard work. :D
My pleasure!
Wow that Tombstone looks amazing and so realistic 👏👏🪦⚰️🎃💀Thank you so much for sharing
Thanks for watching!
I love the “ Frankenstein “ look. Gorgeous
This looks AWSOME! The idea with this metal parts is just great.
Man, that looks so badass. Amazing work, brother. 🎃🎃🎃
Thank you!
Very eye-catching. Love it!!
Way to go Gigmaster!!
Another magnificent build. Thank you so much.
My pleasure!
Well done it looks old and broken and awesome.
Thanks!
Oh that was so beautiful!!🧡🖤🧡👻🎃
Omg that's my local graveyard ! can't believe it's been featured on one of my fav youtube channels lol
Looks great.
Very unique! Love the effect of a specific type of tombstone.
That looks so amazing!
Dude!! That is freaking awesome! I have got to try this! Excellent!
Go for it!
That looks spectacular 👏👏👏👏👏👏
spooktacular
Thank you!
I love this so much!!
Excellent. ❤
Awesome
That is amazing
That really turned out great. I’da bet it was concrete unless I was told otherwise.
Awesome job
turned out really good love that style of stone HFL!!
Great idea.
Thanks!
So good
Absolutely love your page and all your props especially the Halloween stuff!! If u have an Eric draven video build I’d love to see it as I’ve been wanting one of my own. I saw u had made one in the background of one of your videos . Again great work here some quality work !!
Im gonna need you to add these fitted Van Oaks hats to the store!! They are 🔥
I wish I could. I do, however, sell the iron on VanOaks Props logo patches in my etsy shop and you can apply them to the fitted cap of your choosing.
Great Build!
Thanks!
Love it!
Thanks!
Love your content! Could you please do a video on yard haunt vandalism and how to deter/prevent it from happening.
It's not a one size fits all answer, but what I will say seems to be helpful is a fence of some kind. It's the one thing I've heard year after year from haunters that seems to keep people from doing any harm.
Really cool build! Looks awesome!
Thanks!
Very cool and a great idea, it came out amazing. Great job 🧡🤎💛🍁🍂
Thank you!
Stunning work,looks so real
Thanks so much
Amazing! The puzzlement to me is how you target the precision of the carved lettering with the cowl and leveling acrylic seeming to obscure the cut point? The result looks amazing but we can’t figure out how you see for the precise cuts!!
Thanks! There’s a “window” on the collar that allows you to see the cutting bit.
Cool
A great, unique tombstone Derek! How do you secure your tombstones outside so they don't fall over or get blown away?
I made a video on that exact topic. Check it out: How To Setup Your Halloween Tombstones

Great video. Very helpful.. Will you do a video of your display for this year?
Thank you! Not likely. Our display rarely changes, so this video from 4 years ago is pretty close to what it will look like:

Great build idea! Rather than making the Tombstone from scratch you could use a decent store bought tombstone and do the same process essentially, if you don't have the time/energy/materials to do it from scratch.
Good tip!
Looks awesome! I've never seen a fractured tombstone held together with metal bands. Love the look. I'd love to see how you bore out the bottoms of your tombstones to add in the PVC for the rebar. Do you drill them out with a forstner bit? Thanks for sharing.

@@VanOaksProps yes. Thank you.
Always impressed with your videos. What is the vinyl cutter that you use?
Thank you! It’s a silhouette cameo
Any chance to get the name of your starting theme song?
Thank you! Any reason you used the sand and paint instead of Drylock? Also, what do you use, and how, to hold down your tombstones?
I ran out of drylok. Haha. I have another video on weatherproofing your tombstones that shows how we do it.
Can I please get a link for the attachment you put on your dremel? I don't know what they are called exactly to look it up to get one.
Thank you for sharing this video.
It's in the video description.
Any other suggestions for easy DIY rivet heads besides googly eyes or molded hot glue?
Rubber bumper pads.
What was the rubberized spray that you put on the foam to help the paint stick?
Plastidip.
What bit do you use for delicate letters? How big are the letters?
Dremel 194. The letters were about 2” tall
What’s the material you used that imitates metal banding ? Thanks !!!
I apologize I didn’t bother watching the entire video. I found what material you used.
How do you attach the plexiglass to the rotary tool?
The acrylic is glued to a piece that is screwed on
Hmmmm... paintable caulking? never thought about it, i had only seen or heard people use wood putty, spackling ( for some reason the paint always bubbles when i use it :/ ) and some other glues, i may switch to using caulking now, i did a tombstone ( video coming tomorrow ) where i pressed the Great Stuff' Foam into the cracks and let it dry, i used an exacto knife to carefully cut away most then finish sanding it smooth, i found that works but is far messier, how hard is it to sand caulking? i HATE those seams in the foam, if you dont seal them hard they'll re-open up and show through your paint and man that destroys a good tombstone, i appreciate these videos for tips so much!
You can’t sand caulking, but you shouldn’t need to if you’ve applied it smoothly and paint over it.
@@VanOaksProps oh ok thankyou!!!
You forgot rust stain drips.
