    very nice !! I to just bought one of those bulbs to place inside a lantern on top of a 90 year old street clock I am doing a restoration on. I figured it would give the effect of a gas light lantern

    Oh heck yeah!! EDIT: You just gave me an idea to improve upon your candelabra prop. The eva craft foam is perfect for that! I've wanted to make the little "cup" shaped holders for the base of the candles!

    I am SO going to build one of these! Or two. Or...
    Not sure I'm up to rewiring lightbulbs, though. I'll have to find a substitute way of lighting it.

    This was helpful in so many ways! The hack of the lightbulb to run on batteries was especially valuable. I am intimidated by the simplest electronics. I have one of those bulbs that runs on solar power, but the wires came disconnected from the panel. Any suggestions for how to reconnect it?
    Another suggestion for wood grain (albeit probably not on hand) is wood-patterned contact paper.
    Finally, I love your voice, Derek, and could listen to you talk all day!

    I did a similar hack to that flame bulb a couple of years ago for a lantern build in my temple theme. I used a AA battery pack instead of the cell battery though.
    I might have to use some of these tricks myself, maybe an EVA foam cage for a live specimen?

    I love the versatility of eva foam. Nice lightbulb hack too. Nice prop overall, I usually have issues with paint coming off pvc easily. I feel like a primer and seal coat would be ideal for longevity and handling, but a sealer would work fine with minimal handling. I’d be interested if you made a wall mount for the torch, where it could be taken off and put back. Maybe involving magnets? 🤔
    Have you tried cutting EVA with the Glowforge? I imagine the heat may affect the accuracy of the cut, but it’d be interesting to see some testing, maybe using a “protective” layer of something on top… I’d be testing right now if I had a Glowforge! Curiosity got me!

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  9 місяців тому +1

      PVC can definitely benefit from an acetone wipe down before paint and a clear coat. As for laser cutting the foam, that’s exactly what I did and it worked really well. It’s just critical that you make sure the foam is actually EVA and not something else that would be extremely harmful to breathe when it’s being cut.

    Love these! What size does the template print to and how many can you get out of one sheet of foam?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  9 місяців тому +1

      The longest pieces are 13” long, so if you use the tile print function in adobe acrobat you can tape your pages together to make the template. You can get 2 sets from one 18x12” piece of craft foam
