What Time Travel Stories Are Really About

- Why do we keep returning to stories about time travel? From books like H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine, to movies such as Back to the Future, Donnie Darko, Palm Springs, and Tenet, and even in TV shows like Outlander and Russian Doll, we’ve never stopped imagining what it would be like to visit the distant future or relive our past. What are these fantasies of mastering time really about? Here’s our Take on the deeper meaning behind the time-travel story.

Rachel McAdams MUST have a thing for guys who meddle with time, as she's played the love interest of a time traveller FOUR times (Time Traveller's Wife, Midnight in Paris, About Time, and Doctor Strange.) ⌚😹
Or maybe she is the one messing with time to find a romantic partner
Never Noticed! 😆
Ooh.. nice. She must be the female Keanu Reeves. Lol.
@Ariel Hill yes the Strange's love interest
In second place comes Mary Steenburgen. She was love interest of Doc Brown in Back To The Future III and HG Wells in Time After Time.
Back To The Future is a pretty perfect movie.
One thing that’s still pretty unique about it is that the “changed future” is actually a pretty positive one. Most time travel stories usually make a point to show that changing the past, present, or future is *bad* thing. Instead, Marty changed it for the better. It’s very fascinating how this has changed in modern stories (except Endgame).
I highly concur! I love that Marty's altered future is better than the original timeline, since all the changes were made for the best. Apparently, the reason why Crispin Glover refused to return for the sequels is because he thought that the ending sent a negative message that being rich and successful was better than being happy. ☺️
Trina Q Yeah and that’s fascinating because it’s not really about the money so much as they learned to be better, more confident people and therefore lived a more fulfilling life. I could see where he’s coming from to an extent, though.
@@trinaq If anything, everyone in Mcfly's family ended up better because his parents married for the right reasons (love and respect) and not the wrong ones (disappointment and pity). George became a more confident person (don't we all need more of that?) and took on more responsibility and didn't cower to Biff or other bullies anymore which put him in a better life situation. Chicks dig confidence and Lorraine loved and respected him all the more for it. That more solid union lead to being better parents which lead to better outcomes for all the kids. I don't see it as a money thing; that was a side benefit.
Also edge of tomorrow!
@@tariqthomas9090 yeah they weren't even that rich, his father was only just publishing his first novel that day.
"Proving Yourself to Emily Blunt" is definitely the next genre The Take should analyze XD
I was gonna say the same thing!
@@madisoned we all must prove ourselves to Emily at some point, really.
That is the meaning of life
It would take thousands of dollars in plastic surgery to transform this mug into one that would be worthy of emily blunt.
I hope you know this is a very difficult job for which you are totally wrong and if you mess up, my head is on the chopping block. Now hang that up; don’t just *fling* it anywhere.

I was at first really surprised that you guys didn't once mention Dark, but then I realized you probably omitted to avoid spoilers as it's so damn good and everyone should experience it without knowing, for sure, what's going to happen and the complex relationships between each character.
Do recommend it to everyone. And please, no English dub or the experience is ruined!
That could be the explanation, but I rather think that Dark didn’t fit the narrative of their conclusion.. nothing in it is present in Dark.
Also, i think all examples that were shown were American. They didn’t even include doctor who and that’s pure timetravel story since like the sixties..
@@celiwhaaat6285 Oh yeah, it might be because it's not American. That's a shame though since Dark absolutely deserves a shoutout and, if the omission was due to the fact that it wasn't produced in America, it's definitely a bit disappointing.
I think it does fit into their narrative very well. Without spoiling anything, let me just say that two very important characters were trying to accomplish different things, causing their worlds being stuck in a vicious cycle, with the only way of ending it being an extremely selfless act from, well, you know. I say it plays into their narrative extremely well. Too well, even, as I'm sure you might notice now given what other characters have also done throughout the series.
I watched it dubbed in French and it wasn't ruined
I literally clicked on this video to see you guys dissect Dark. Please do a video on that masterpiece!!!
One of the unexpected benefits of Hamilton being on Disney+ is that all these great channels get to reference it easily in their videos. 😊
Right?! 😂😂 I love it
Hamilton is overrated.
gross. you sound like some sort of bot
Or she’s just a person who enjoys Hamilton 🙄? You can easily take a look at her channel and see she’s not a bot
@@skylarblue5284 I just now saw this thread lol. Definitely not a bot. Or is that exactly something a bot would say?? DUN DUN DUN. 😂 Thanks for vouching for me. 🙂
How can you talk about time travel and NOT talk about Dark
Or Legends of Tomorrow
or Doctor Who
Yeah I was wondering as well
One year ago it would have been a good idea. Back then Dark was the ultimate time travel story for consistency over Hollywood tropes. Then season 3 ruined everything great about the series.

I'm not a time travel trope fan, save for the few exceptions, such as Predestination, Interstellar, Back to the Future, Prisoner of Azbakan,, Looper and of course my personal favourite time travel execution ever...
Netflix's amazing German series "Dark ".
With the town, families and everything so messed up,kudos to showrunners for that masterful series finale
How can you say you're not a time travel fan if you like Dark? It's the greatest time travel story ever told
@@radhiadeedou8286 first of all, I accidentally found the series, somehow I never even heard of it before and once it began , within two or three episodes,I was hooked. The story ,the music ,the casting everything was fantastic. And non binary , non linear concept pulled me in enough to stay within it .
How did you not include "Dark" in this video? Best time travel show EVER.
How come you guys didnt mention Dark from Netflix?!
Tritão P.H. Maybe Dark was wrong for this episode. Maybe it had to be disappeared in order for this episode to exist.
@@happygolucky5534 lol i guess it is way to complicated to explain, it needs a video for itself
The Take, how very dare you make a video about time travel and not even MENTION Dark?! Honestly, that one deserves a whole video. Please, I'd love to see your "take" on arguably the best sci-fi show of all time, Netflix's Dark! It is a German show, but it's so worth the language barrier.
YES
Awesome series, had me hooked from the first episode!
I was waiting for dark to be mentioned only to be completely let down
YES! Oh my god
I came here just to make this comment
Another example worth mentioning is Netflix's Dark. The twists and dimensions to time travel it weaves are in a league of its own. DEFINITELY worth the watch!
While we are on the topic of time travel, could you give PLEASE dive into the absolute genius that is the series "Dark"? It's so deep and complex, I wish a channel like this would cover it for a bigger audience, since the show is criminally underrated
I wish they showed a clip of Homer Simpson repeatedly traveling into the past when dinosaurs ruled the world. The slightest thing he changed affected his present even though he tried to be careful. He then got fed up and smashed whatever was in his path. It’s one of my favorite Simpsons episode.😆
Lol I thought about that scene while watching this, too. That would've been epic.
You might also like a story by Ray Bradbury “A sound of thunder”
I watched it too! It’s a part of the 5th treehouse of horror episode.
Not _one_ Doctor Who example? [sad TARDIS noises]
NOOO WE MADE THE TARDIS SAD 😭😭😭
A little offended you guys didn’t mention Umbrella Academy in this video as that is so central to the story
My thoughts exactly!
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a nonlinear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey... stuff.
It's all just Jeremy Bearimy baby!
"Blink" is one of the best Doctor Who episodes ever.
Y'all should watch Primer (2004) - It offers a shockingly eerie view of recursive time travel!
I remember on a movie Time Machine he kept going back trying to save his girlfriend but she died every single time I be it in a different ways. I guess in their version of time travel what is destined to be is destined to be.
is that the one where they met on a train and then the train derailed?
@@madisoned I believe so and then there was the scene when she was hit by a trolley car I believe.
Sounds almost like "the Butterfly Effect" in a way too where no matter what he did things got bad for either him or his girl he loved . he tried thinking of all kinds of ways to go back and save them and fix it but just couldn't do ended up realizing the best thing he could do is to go back when they were kids becoming friends and not become friends so just had to let her go and leave her life completely to save her. Its with Ashton Kutcher. Should see it if haven't. Its so good and makes a good point/theory of trying to go back and fix thevpast cuz just like the title the whole butterfly effect shows that changing something even just so small can change things drastically and in a way ya we have free will but also destiny so some things u just can't force to make happen or fix and it just all work out cuz just like medicine there's always negative side effects.what helps one thing hurts another so sometimes by just have to accept that ya we can alter the experience a bit but what Is destined to be or not be is still going to happen just in diff ways maybe. It's interesting cuz I always struggled understanding the whole free will thing yet God knows everything that is going to happen so that helped it make more sense to me. That's why we could never go back and just stop every bad thing from happening and expect to come back to present day to a perfect world. Sadly we all eventually die and everything happens for a reason and is always perfect the end. I would think he fun to go back and witness some history events or like win the lottery once or something lol
Yeah that was the grandfather paradox, not "destiny".
The 2002 remake of 'The Time Machine' with Guy Pearce, right?
One "Time Traveling" show I would like to recommend is a wonderful Canadian series called "Being Erica." In this series, time travel is used as therapy. If you haven't seen it, check it out. I have a feeling it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Perhaps it is worthy of a The Take episode.
What about dark? It's one of the perfect examples of time traveling
It was before season 3
Dark is missing in this episode like those kids in Winden, Germany. Dark is the perfect much for this episode.
Yesss! One of the only German productions I thoroughly enjoyed
Yeah, but it doesn’t fit the narrative that they Take..
Looking at the list of movies and series, I think in another video you'll analyze Dark in detail.
Not a single mention of Dark? It's literally the best time travel story of all time
I'm so glad I watched "Palm Springs" it's a much needed film for 2020
Time travel is about the desire of every human to go back and fix their mistakes. There is nothing deep to it. Every single person on this planet felt it at some point in their life.
exactly!
thats exactly what makes it deep
@@amgm1996 This desire should really not go too deep because it is impossible. Failure to give up on fixating on your past mistakes again and again will lead to suicide. Trust me, I know. I have experience on that field.
@SUBSCRIBE TO ME AND TURN ON THE BELL Indeed it could go as deep as saving the entire world. This year could use some time travel.
I think there are more levels than that. One, it can show how mistakes themselves become meaningless since nothing you do has lasting consequences. Two, it can show that those mistakes are simply an illusion, as choosing a different path would result in alternate, possibly worse mistakes than the ones we already got (e.g. The Butterfly Effect). It can demonstrate how the human desire for control over the universe is self corrupting and can result in repeating patterns even through time travel. Basically, you can change your past, but you can't change you.
Where is DARK???!!!! it's one of the best time travel shows.
No recognition for ‘Devs?’ That’s arguably the most complex and realistic piece of work involving time, and also very well done.
NO DARK?? Unforgivable!!
More unforgivable is not mention Doctor Who.
I LOVE time travel stories. Have y'all ever done an analysis of Donnie Darko? It's so weird and fascinating and one of my favorite movies. I'd love to see your take.
Have you seen Legends of Tomorrow?
This comes out while I'm literally watching Doctor Who reruns 😂

I'm bummed they didn't talk at all about Doctor Who in this vid
Please do a video on Netflix’s DARK it is an AMAZING show!
Palm Springs is awesome. ♥️
im surprised dark and the umbrella academy weren't mentioned in this. great video tho, as always :)
I would love to see an analysis JUST on Russian Doll. It's so fucking good and underrated and there are so many themes and character studies to talk about. Especially with how it frames Nadia and Alan, with Nadia being unapologetically crass, snarky, (a lot of that probably has to do with Natasha Lyonne playing her), she takes a lot of drugs and has no problem with unprotected sex and not looking both ways before crossing the street, and Alan taking the role that female characters are usually subjected to in stories framed around men, about how their friendship never turns into a romantic one-- at least not yet, how men are allowed to be vulnerable, cry, and show emotion and the show never once makes fun of the male characters for it or emasculates them, how we're all a little bit broken inside for one reason or another but that doesn't mean we have to go through it alone and that it's okay to ask for help, mental health (tying in with Nadia's Death Seeker tendencies and her issues with her mother's death, as well as Alan's own struggles), AND HOW THE CAST IS MAINLY COMPRISED OF FEMALE CHARACTERS. OLDER FEMALE CHARACTERS OVER THE AGE OF 30 WHICH HOLLYWOOD DEEMS UNACCEPTABLE.
Your comment alone has made me want to go back and rewatch!
I was about to comment about how Dark is imo a necessary inclusion on this video (and on your Netflix watchlist) but it seems like a lot of other people had that same though lol
it reminds me of Dark, certainly one of the best Netflix series
An episode all about the time travel genre --- and not a SINGLE MENTION of DOCTOR WHO?
Because this was about movies, not TV shows. If it were about TV shows, they’d also have to mention Supernatural, which contains all of the different time travel tropes (I think). Maybe only the first two. But there’s a big thing if not being able to change the past, no matter how much you try. Because you’ve already done it. If you go back, you’ll always have gone back, and therefore the present will always be what it is- see: the existence of Baby. Dean grew up in that car, but his dad only bought it because Dean convinced him to. And then there’s the Mystery Spot time loop.
@@katherinemorelle7115 but they mention TV show too. Doctor Who is it the ultimate time travel story and now even a mention or scene?
ikr, I'm so sad
@@katherinemorelle7115 -- actually, though the video is primarily about movies, it _did_ make multiple mentions of a certain Netflix series --- so the fact that it is a TV series can't beb reason.
@akshay satish - - they _did_ however make _multiple_ mentions of a Netflix series that is far _less_ iconic than Doctor Who.
After this and Patrick H Willem's video about how time loop movies are a perfect metaphor for quarantine, I'm really gonna have to watch Palm Springs.
This video essay came at the right time, I recently watched Palm Springs and Groundhog Day for the first time, and rewatched Back to The Future.
Ok, Dark needs a complete video
I love your channel, you forgot to mention the umbrella academy.

Ever since my first viewing on the original Time Machine movie (never read the book) I've loved the genre, from Then Sound of Thunder in Jr. High I was fascinated, but the movies like Time After Time, The Butterfly Effect and Frequency touch me deeply.
If u like such media, u should definitely watch Dark on Netflix. I cannot stress how effing EXCELLENT that series is OMG I hope u watch it if u haven't already
the book is great. I highly recommend it
The coincidence is unbelievable. I have been searching for so many time travel movies and here is one of my favourite UA-cam channel telling me about the meaning of time travel in movies
Living for the Hamilton scenes you've been adding lately
About Time really was an interesting time travel story. It was much better than I thought it'd be going in.
And of course (ah yes the existentialist athiest that I am), part of what gives our lives meaning is that everything is finite and will eventually end. Even the universe. It's also sort of liberating.
I like how a few years ago Legends of Tomorrow caused a resurgence in time travel shows. Many of them died as soon as they came. Some even became cult classics like Timeless, but it died too. They came, they went, and the legendary Legends who started this trend, survived.
Let that be a lesson: Being a part of a trend has a shelf life, it won’t last, but if you start a trend that’s when you have something, that’s what makes you special.
Legends of Tomorrow is amazing
@@AlejoConejo-vb8ln love that show 🎉
I love these stories, very inventive ideas here
According to quantum physics, time travel is theoretically quite possible. Please use your imagination: "when time passes, it passes, right?" Ask about the time-space continuum, wormholes, etc. I was just kind of shocked at how shallow this was.
Predestination is one of the best time travel films.
Glad I watched this video and viewed the comments cos of the recommendations for the show ‘Dark.’ Just started it and it’s very intriguing!! Just when I needed a new show to watch 👍🏾
This is an intriguing composition. A book I read on this was also a rich tapestry. "Temporal Echoes: Amelia's Odyssey Through Ancestral Shadows" by Vivian Rosewood
12 Monkeys the series....a must watch for any time travel fan! AMAZING show with superior writing!
“TIMELESS” IS A TIME TRAVEL SHOW, the antagonists would try to change history with their stolen time machine and the protagonists would chase them and try to make sure there was minimal damage to historical events. it’s really good :).
I absolutely love the moral of Russian Doll. These two people should have helped each other, but they didn't so the universe got...mad. The plot basically kept badgering them until they actually looked each other in the eye. The isolation they both faced was self-perpetrated and it takes an entire season for them to understand that. The end with the Death Day parade shows how they are finally able to face their mortality and general vulnerability together.
I hoped that you would bring up Time Warp Trio.
I love how your videos include Hamilfilm scenes. 😍
About Time - so glad it was mentioned. I love that film so much and the upbeat message.
i love this channels consistency. Thanks for sharing.
Aside from everything else, I really appreciate the view you guys take on BTTF, where what's mended is not the monetary lifestyle of the family, but a healthy marriage for their family life to build off of :')
I live with chronic deja vu episodes so movies and shows like these freak me out but I LOVE them 😂✨

I was kinda sad the show timeless wasn't included more than one clip. I miss that show.
And according to all the comments I should really give Dark another try.
No Dark? The show was the best exploration of time travel of all time?
'50 First Dates' is a time loop movie, in that the protagonist gets to keep re-meeting the same woman every day, who won't remember anything he did or said before. It just doesn't use time travel, but short term amnesia where her memory resets every night.
Great editing in this as always.
could you guys make a video only about palms springs?
I love the time travel trope but especially when the characters' time travel antics comes with consequences. That's why I didn't love the idealistic version of time travel from Endgame. I also love the stories that teach us time cannot be meddled with and to accept the consequences of our actions. Time is one of the few things that is protected from human meddling.
you forgot the most common time travel trope. the one where the main caractare is stuck in an another time and not being able to go back to its original timeperiod before an specific task is done. often with a deadline.
