Larry Owings was an incredible wrestler, himself. Most people dismiss him and say he was a fluke. That "fluke" had pinned every 142lb opponent his entire sophomore season, including in the NCAA tournament, leading up to the showdown with Gable. In Gable's run to the Olympics, he outscored his opponents 127 - 1.....the only person able to score a point against Gable was Owings during the trials. The Russians couldn't even do it.
Thankyou Dan Gable for giving Larry Owings credit / compliment in saying "Larry Owings was on track". And for humbly saying "this is what happens in life". Yes indeed, life hands all of us setbacks & losses that are infinitely more important than a loss in a sporting event.
Indeed, just a sporting event and it was half a century ago, it is ancient history st this point. That day Gable lost probably a couple young men from our country were killed in the Vietnam war, we should remember them more than sporting events
An older man can accept that picture on that wall. A younger man would be embarrassed and ashamed. That is all part of life as a man. Something that cannot be taught, it happens through time and growth.
Larry Owings grew up on a farm within a mile from the farm I grew up on. A couple of others from history also grew up within a mile or two in this Oregon farming area. Larry Mahan, PRCA 4 time world champion. Also Lena Riggi who later married John Basilone. Gunnery Sgt Basilone was the first enlisted man awarded the Medal of Honor in WW2 and was KIA on Iwo Jima. My apologies for the hijack. Dan Gable is my favorite wrestler and I hated to see him lose his final NCAA match. He certainly redeemed himself after that loss.
Wow. Such a class act. Legend. Strange to watch that match though. He seemed gassed at the end which is the last thing I would expect from him. Hard to say he’s not still the greatest even if he didn’t win that last one.
Mechanics of it. He looked up saw the scoreboard and was affected by it. He lost momentum. He kept crawling off the mat . As he was doing that Larry was gaining momentum and control. Catch up and battling back was hard with the third period at hand. That's the sport. All the emotionalism came later. He could have gone on to wrestle more in the seasons to come. Did he?? 180 wins? Better than Cael Sanderson with 159. But Cael went undefeated. But that doesn't in anyway discount 180 fantasticks victories
people need to understand LARRY OWNS PINNED EVERYBODY FOR YEARS.I THINK THE MOVIE VISION QUEST IS BASED OFF LARRY OWENS I MEAN HE TOO DROPPED TWO WEIGHT CLASSES
Not at all, he is still viewed as the greatest wrestler of all time. In fact it helped him become even better which took him to an Olympic win. Something Owings didn't do.
I know what your saying. This loss haunts him even to this day, but Dan is 100% correct in saying this loss made him better. Dan did beat Larry later but his Loss will forever haunt him even if he knows that Larry was the better wrestler that day and knowing it made him better. That is the heart of a true champion and Dan is a true champion and will forever be tied to Larry even until the day he dies... so crazy to even think about it but I think that is true. Dan is an amazing Wrestler and champion... Larry is also Amazing... Both are champions.

Class act. What matters is what happened afterwards.
True winner...when you hit a low and lose you push forward and get better.

@southern Ohio,,, Larry Owings had to been pretty damn strong on top of his wrestling technique. 💪
both larry and dan pinned all opponents on the way to that final match. Maybe that has never been on NCAA history? Maybe at the heavy wt only??
Ahh Danny Boy, ya whooped him in da rematch
Dan didn't just get beat he got DISTROID!! Distroid so bad that that 1 loss negated all previous wins in the minds of past and future wrestlers

It was 13-11😆
