  • Let's understand how does a Newton's cradle work in a logical way. Newton's cradle is a cool device which can teach you conservation of momentum principle in a practical way.

The original energy input comes from gravity! So i always hate it when people say gravity has nothing to do with it!! The energy you borrow from gravity

Sabin, the actual video and the animation differ in that in the animation, the center balls, the captive balls, do not move but only have the energy transferred through them. In the actual video the captive balls do move though. Is that due to the elastic modulus of the material used to make the ball? If these were the most solid substance we know of, diamond, would the balls act more like the animation rather than the actual video? Would the action be more amplified using rubber balls?

I think it has more to do with the angle of impact and elasticity of material of the balls. If you could align the balls perfectly, and figure out the best material to use, the balls would probably behave more like the video.

i think it would be less similar to the behavior with steel with rubber. This is because the rubber absorbs some energy. Momentum is always conserved, but mechanical energy is not. Heat and sound can take away your mechanical energy, proportional to the square of velocity, so you might end up needing to more more mass at lower velocity to conserve total energy. That might mean that two balls would go flying off the end when one ball hits, and the one that hits would end up bouncing back a bit as well.

What if ball #1 was 25% heavier then the others? What if we release 2 or 3 or 4 balls? This video didn´t properly explain anything.

Saying GAINS VELOCITY is a great description but it is not an explanation please explain how is VELOCITY GAINED and Transmitted
2:32 second ball GAINS THE VELOCITY of the first ball

Can't understand the say that the second ball has velocity (m1v1=m2v2 ?? but m2 does not move

Hey! According to this explanation I can predict that when I will repeat this with holding 2 balls ,after the collision they will transfer double velocity to the next ball and so on ,at the other edge only one ball should go up ,right
But I observed something different , actually at the other edge 2 balls will go up
    🤯

It's not like that. In that case you have to first analyse collison between 2m and m using conversation of energy and momentum. You will get the right answer. I will release a dedicated video for this in 3-4 months.

So the energy will be shared among all the factors. You will see an uneven movement. This is also the reason to show the preservation the balls are aligned and equal in mass.

This explains nicely the behavior of glued balls and that a lot of solutions are possible which all obey the two conservation laws. But it doesn't explain the solution we see when two, three, or four balls are released.
Therefore see Hertz's adjustment to Hooke's law at
