    You can see bigger versions of this scientific demonstration in museums and science departments. But we think this might be the first time it has been produced as an affordable table-top demonstration.
    Fifteen ball bearings hang from a frame, suspended on fine threads. However this is not a version of the famous Newton's Cradle. Here the ball bearings are not touching, and in addition, each ball bearing has a different length of thread supporting it. The time a pendulum takes to move to and fro is dependent on the length of the pendulum. And here we have fifteen pendulums, all of different lengths!
    Using the supplied wooden bar, move all the ball bearings to one side, and then move the bar out of the way. All the ball bearings start to swing from side to side. Initially they all (nearly) move together, but very quickly, other patterns start to appear....

      TerrorJesus What are "magnetics", and why would you need them? If you managed to eliminate friction _completely_, yes, it would swing forever. But you can't. Even in a vacuum, there's friction between the toy's parts (although eliminating air friction _would_ make it swing for a lot longer).

    • @DanOC1991

      The time it takes for a pendulum to complete one swing is dependent on the square root of the length of the pendulum. Shorter pendulum --> shorter time.

      Daniel O'Connell Well, roughly the square root. There are terms (in a differential equation) that are ignored in a mathematical pendulum that are relevant in a real one. It's only decently accurate for small angles.

      Alcesmire Quite right. It's not strictly a linear system.

    • @RylanEdlin
      @RylanEdlin 9 років тому

      In this case, it's pretty close to linear. The density of the ball is very high and the mass of the string is very low compared to the mass of the ball. Air resistance will obviously damp it a bit, but I'd say approximately rather than roughly.

    I think the visual would be even better if rotated 180 degrees with the camera looking under the balls. No strings in the way.

      The black plastic base makes that pointless. Just a low camera angle, that looks between the black base and the balls.

      I think it's very easy to remove it, unless it's glued. :)
      I believe they use big camera to film this show, so only mobile phone or small point and shoot will work, but even then, I kinda doubt small camera will be able to pick up entire length without wide-angle lens.
      Btw, search UA-cam for "Pendulum wave (slinger golf)" it should be on blindbrick's channel. That guy made it more stable, so patterns are not as chaotic, and it is much bigger as well.

      Oh, and lock the camera focus on the 5th or 6th ball from the camera.
