I treat Pastel like I do any other morph. I seek out and obtain the best examples I can. The cool thing with Pastel is that, since it's so common, a really stunning example doesn't cost much more than a pet grade snake. That's a win.
I didn't even think about it from that viewpoint but you are correct. All the more reason to focus on the quality aspect when it's not costing any more than a sub par example of the gene.
HItcha with a like on this one... Great topic... A baby Pastel Clown with a high defined headstamp and bright yellow sides is the easiest and most far out single gene clown around in my thoughts... I don't want everything with Pastel but you gotta appreciate what that singe gene can pull off... Great content Brotha!!~
Thanks! I agree I don't want it in everything, I just think people brush it and a lot of other solid genes off and always go the Spotnose Yellowbelly\Redstripe path by default.
So I think the hate comes from how it ages and in lighter mutations specifically. Dark gene pastel clowns look great so it’s more so which projects they are put in. Also pastel can change the head stamp for the bad as far as looks go. Also I think with the animal being a super pastel is definitely to much with clown. Pastel is great in most projects with the exception of clown (mostly light projects), genetic stripe, and monsoon. Pastel arguably improves projects like Puzzle or Zebra. Good video and well thought out!
I personally am in love and obsessed with my Super Pastel Vanilla Freeway, yeah no clown but vanilla really really helps that pastel look so much better and not look so yellow.
find it really weird because some morph like het red axanthic look great with pastel...The most beautiful clowns I seen had pastel in the combo,im not trying do to a redstripe spotnose clown like everybody LOL . 🤷🏼♀ it really depends on what morph your breeders has. i have het red axanthic adding pastel in my breeding program will give the animal beautiful blushing and a completely change of color! But people seem to forget that not everyone is working with the same morphs ...🐍🐍
My point exactly, everyone is chasing Justin. I don't have redstripe, spotnose or leopard in my clown project and plan to keep it that way unless I find a more interesting way to use it. Don't get me wrong it looks good but they are the base genes almost everyone working clown is building on. The HRA idea is interesting, I like the HRA clowns but I don't think I've seen it with pastel that I can remember.
i have some, BUT my problem is not quality, its the fact that i do not like the "white out" effect on the head, you lose the clown head stamp imho. Pastel enchi clown looks good though
I tend to agree with you on the headstamp, but even when you "lose" the clown headstamp, you GAIN the PASTEL clown headstamp which is also quite unique
@@gregrippon-rippnreptiles sure, but i dont care for dots on the head, i want pattern most of the time. With enchi pastel clown you lose most if not all the dots and tends to lose the white out effect. To each their own tho for sure
I personally like the dots. Kinda gives it a cheetah type look although i agree it removes most of them in some combos. That said most of the genes that really impact clown in cool ways drastically reduce or almost completely eliminate the head stamp. Black pastel, wookie, stranger, mahogany and red head all basically just make a solid color head for example.
@@heatherb2762 Agreed, pastel enchi clown turns out pretty great. Then the only possible issue is weak pastel brown out, but i usually like those just fine
My butter+pastel girl is so beautiful, especially post-shed, and she's about 7 years old. She just laid her first ever clutch! Bred with my phantom+mojave (purple passion). They should make 50% BELs :D 7 eggs, all fertile with good veins...though they do look a bit wrinkled...think I may have gotten to them a day or two late....maybe a bit calcified.
I think there will be people that like and dislike many genes/combos. People will plead their case for/against why the like them or not, but saying no one should make those combos because some people don’t like them is silly. If one person doesn’t like it, that person doesn’t have to work with or buy it. As long as people aren’t culling animals because they’re not the combos they wanted in a pairing, there shouldn’t be an issue. Just my opinion.
I 100% agree with you, and the culling part is one of the reasons I used this gene as an example. I'm not saying people are currently doing this, but the recent sentiment that Pastel is a "discount" or "throw away" gene combine with the vast presence it has in the Clown market gives me a little concern that maybe not culling, but them being used as feed animals, may be a thing in the future. People already do this with normals and lower end single gene co-doms. There is nothing wrong with the circle of life and I guess it's not different than us feeding rodents since reptile eating animals need to eat as well but that can be a slippery slope leading to culling especially in a slow market. Personally I like pastel clowns so I don't mind them sticking around if I don't quickly move them!
This is exactly my thoughts on most genes. I think to many people in the community are chasing projects trying to recreate popular animals instead of making their own paths.
I think your right it’s anyone choice what to breed but people who shit on genes I think that’s just what they like and I love Clowns and I still want to do things with clowns and I will till I die why because that’s what I want. Awesome videos 👍🏼
Agreed, most people will be vocal about what they like and what they don't, it's human nature. I think clowns are the best recessive to work with and will focus most of my attention on them. I just can't ever wrap my hear around the pastel hate in them.
I personally think it's due to how many bad examples of it there are and sometimes you can't really judge the quality until they start putting on some size. That said I can see the argument for avoiding something that has a high chance of turning out less than ideal. I think pastel is a case of having to see the parents and know who you're getting it from.
Hate pastel in my clowns. Ruin the dorsal stripe imo. Also ruin the headstamps often. Pastel works great in dg and pied. Not clown. My 2 cents. Dg doesnt brown out. Albino doesnt brown out
As someone who is a sucker for a good dorsal stripe I will agree with you that Pastel is not the best in clown when it comes to preserving that aspect. You mentioned Albino, do you feel that Pastel is an improvement when mixed into that project?
I've never worked albino so idk. Rn were working monsoon and sunset and dg and puzz some clown stuff Lil pied. Someday I'll jump into some labs but I just don't have experience with albino. More interested in the t pos Ultracet amd monarch personally
In my opinion the industry has moved on from single co-dom clowns in general. Pastel clowns are a casualty of that. A 3 gene clown with pastel that is also het for desert ghost?…Very few people are going to turn their nose up at that snake.
I do agree that the industry is way beyond single co-dom clowns. But how often do you still here people say things like "but it has pastel in it..." or "if only it didn't have pastel..." It just seems to have a stigma about it with clown even in the multi-recessive projects. Just earlier this week on a podcast there was a discussion about how it was critical to keep pastel out of a Hypo Clown project.
so, you don't work with desert ghost or hypo...or any gene that make it brighter. the problem is people are working with spotnose and other brown reddish rust gene so of course pastel will look" bad "

I love Pastel ❤
It work very well with Ultramel too.
I'm not sure if I've seen a Pastel Ultramel in person or not yet, but you're not the first person I've heard say that.
I like them. Like you said , they are a good base gene.
