Just purchased my first kit and it is a safari. Came here in panic to make sure you don't shit on smaller kits. Very happy to hear you also owned the safari! The safari is maple now
When the voice on the inside becomes louder, stronger and more profound than all of the voices on the outside...you have mastered your life.
I gig on a pearl midtown and get compliments on how it sounds. It helps that I mostly use it for music where the drums can sit behind the other instuments in the mix, so projection and volume isn't an issue.
Totally love the small kits. Didn’t at first until I bought a DW Design series Mini- Pro. That thing sounds so good. And you can get some extremely low, full punchy sounds out of the toms and kick. I beefed up the snare that came with it as well. Switched the head to a Evans heavyweight and replaced the wires with Puresound Super 30 series. This kit stacks up against any and all with the right heads and tuning!
I use a Pearl Midtown and have used it for a prog-rock show with my band a couple months ago. It was the house kit that night. Everyone was wary with the small bass drum but, after a drummer got off stage, loved the kit. Beautiful sound and blends nicely with the rest of the band. I have that coupled with my Sabian XSR Commuter pack and a 16 inch Sabian B8X Ballistic crash as well as just got Tama Classic hardware and my Sonor Perfect Balance pedal. She is a beauty of a kit with a great sound! My guitarist wants this to be our "thing" on stage now with me playing a small kit
Good talk. This is a serious conversation among drummers. Best wishes to you guys.
I’ve owned a few different micro kits over the years....and personally I think they are a must... great for band rehearsals were you just don’t need your bigger drums I’ve currently got a pearl midtown and it packs up into 2 bags...much easier to transport... couple it with light hardware such as the Dw which I’ve got or the new Yamaha crosstown your good to go....I’ve also gigged with it in smaller rooms were stage size is a problem and it works fine.... I still have my bigger kit ready to go with it’s monster 20x14 bass drum 😆for slightly bigger rooms etc.... so either way I’m prepared
I just got the pdp aquabats action drums and man I'm blown away. I've got an old pearl export kit in the basement but the micro kit is perfect in the guitar room!
Love my Yamaha hip gig nestled kit, many gig hours that made life easier
I played the Sonor Martini as my main gigging kit for years. 14” kick, 8 and 13 toms, and a 12 snare. Whole kit plus hardware and cymbals bags fit in the trunk of my corolla. I could also carry everything in one trip with a small foldable dolly. I only sold it recently to upgrade to a 20-12-14 Ludwig kit.
But I also recently got the Pearl Compact Traveler. Whole setup fits in a 24” cymbal bag. 18” kick, 10” snare, I added a 14” Fat Flat snare from Pearl, hardware, and cymbals fit in the one backpack. Perfect for gigs where I don’t have much space. Sure it’s heavy, but I use a foldable dolly for when I don’t need to climb stairs for the gig.
Some of them go as small as 14 x 13 for the bass drum. Super small! But I love these compact kits. My favorite is the one made by Parish Drums.
Yes 🙌 love my Pearl midtown for practicing on...what heads would you suggest for playing live? 🤔
I was waiting for this..IMO the Pearl mid towns are the best with coated ambassadors.
Im using Pearl Midtown for 5 years now, I use it for church drumming.. It really sounds good.and looks awesome
I just love every topic you talk about! Super interesting and relevant!
Please talk about whether it's important for a working drummer to use an SPD/other electronic drum gadgets🙏🏻
I have to play one or two gigs every day, sometimes on boats and beaches so moving my regular drums ( 22, 12, 16, 14") is sometimes very difficult, that's why I just bought a DW design mini pro and I totally love it! Easier to move and load in the car and it sounds amazing, lots of compliments lol greetings from Mexico 👍🏼🇲🇽🥁
What kind of life are you living, bro?
I love bop kits!!!!
You sound very intelligent. I had a set of Slingerlands, which I played 40 years ago With my band we did gigs everywhere. Now that I am 60 I’m having my old age crisis. My 30 year marriage is breaking up, and have ordered the ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove. Back in the day we played rock- top 40 -Funk-even a few disco if needed. What we were playing then is now classic rock! Lol. My question, is this kit suitable for giging? I had a hi hat stand and they sold me sabian B8X cymbals that sound trashy? It’s been so many years I’m out of touch. Should I get this small set? And should I upgrade my cymbals. Thank you for your help. You have a great way of speaking.
I love to hear this man talk, a awesome drummer, extremely articulated and extremely knowledgeable. He can be the best motivational speaker for drummers ever. So suave and classy. Cheer up sir, you're a pleasure to hear.
Thank you for the kind words Evelyn! Much appreciated 💜🙏🏼
I have Sonor AQX micro set and their sound is very mature and very good. On the tom and floor head i have Remo pinstripe.
Thanks for your thoughts on these kits. I've been using Ludwig Breakbeats for quite a few years. Considering the Sonor AQX Micro...
I just bought the micro. So far- I think the kick is too small and wish I would've gone with the jungle.
Can get loads of depth if you tune a 13 tom low down.
I have an early Sonor Jungle kit, innovative.
for small rock gig: 16x16 or 20x10 kick drum??
I need a good compact kit for recording. What’s a good suggestion?
18” kick, 10” and 14” toms, 14” snare. Small footprint, and good all-around capability.
Mapex mars bebop
Sonor safari🤘🏽🔥🔥🔥
I think those smaller sized kits are ideal for an A2E conversion. If course, wouldn't a maple one, but a poplar with a nice wrap would work beautifully for that purpose.
Imagine triggering Superior Drummer with one of those?
I loved this
Because I love small kits too
Actually 18 bass drum for me haha I’m crazeeeeee
Sonor Martini 14" kick
I keep my drum kits small I have a 14" Odery cafe kitdrum kit a 16" Gretch catalina street drum kit and a 12" bass drum da rosa and a 14" tama club flyer I keep my bass drums small no bigger then 16" bass drums
which one is your favourite? Im looking to buy either the tama club jam or maybe the catalina club
@@JamSlapper I love the Tama flyer bass drum but I do not like the floor tom or rack tom so I use the Gretsch Tom and floor tom 10" and 12" rack and floor tom catalina style
@@JamSlapper you can take a look at my channel and look at my drum kits their as a suggestion
How do get a 14 inch kick to sound good? I just bought the AQX micro, but the kick seems too small.
They are great , sound great, budget drums , easy transport, Pearl MIDTOWN sounsd 100 % better than safari than aqx....
Why you are not endorsed by Sonor ?
I’ve turned down multiple offers from Sonor dating back to 2015. Full context here:

@David Duarte Explanation is linked above.
Micro's may be the way of the future...
MARTINI !
And... Pdp new yorker?
Honestly never heard of that kit until this moment. Lol.
I have the bop kit from PDP, it has bigger toms than the new yorker I believe, and I love it. That satin seafoam color is🤌🤌🤌. And the price is great.
I think it would be amazing/hilarious if a drummer tried their best to make the Tama Club-Jam Flyer work for Death Metal (sizes are 14" kick, 8" rack tom, 10"' floor tom, and 10" snare, they are TINY!!!)
im actually first
Lol 👍🏼
Anything smaller than 10/13/16 is too small.
I like small kits, but 14” and 16” kick drums are basically useless. 18” kicks are great and record really well.
why 16" kick drums are useless? I've been planning to buy midtown this year
@@kimcarig714 too high pitched and they lack volume. They might be interesting as an effect, but not for a main kick. 18"-22" is the sweet spot for kick drums IMO.
