It's not a matter of power or torque, it's a matter of ground engagement. The case has a ground contact patch measured in square inches, the Allis Chalmers in square feet. If the Allis was really trying the tracks would have been either stationary, or going forward. As it was, the tracks were rolling backwards, which means that it wasn't even in gear.
I was a bit surprised to see the audience standing as close to the action as they did. Although you did mention it was mainly for show, there is still a risk of that cable snapping. The danger potential sure did appear to be high, especially for the Allis operator. I don't know if anyone noticed, but at the back of the crawler, there is an angled panel where the cable could ricochet off and take out the crawler operator. Like you said, it was sketchy!! It was fun to watch, though. Thanks for sharing!!😊
They were just playing to put on a show. Tugging each other back and forth. The owner of that hand built Case knows if you break it you gotta make it. Seeing all those kids enjoying it makes it all worth gold.
Grandpa came to ND from Norway under the homestead act. He said the gov. would provide one or two of those large case tractors For several farmers to share use of. It helped keep the farming community bonded together in purpose Where they would all help each other with harvests.
Really cool seeing those nostalgic works of engineering! I bet that Case would have pulled it's own if had the gross weight to play tug of war. Very cool, hope you had a fantastic time out there and thanks for posting up some cool old machinery!
It was fun to watch, mostly all for show because the dozer was basically in neutral. That steamer though was fun to watch, hear and smell. Keep on tractoring!
To think of all the work each of those two machines have done. Just think if people had to do that work with a shovel. Great show, wish I could be there.
Like professional wrestling: was just a show, folks. The HD has well over 3X power and weight and far more ground engagement. The Case, as lovely as it is, was just rolling the dozer in neutral. And that’s fine-who would want to break the antique? Not me.

Love the Case 150 and it is a pulling machine. The AC Dozer, however, is very large and has at least 3 times the weight of the steamer, five times the traction, three times the horsepower, not to mention torque in the lower gears. This was just for show. No way was it serious. Besides all of that, the hook up point was much higher on the dozer, which contributed to a lot of traction loss of the steamer. That wouldn't have made much difference here though.
The Chalmers certainly weighs more, certainly has more traction, certainly has more HP, and would certainly win if it was actually in gear, but it certainly does NOT have more torque-in any gear- than that Case steamer (that thing puts out 8,000 ft-lbs of torque at a very low rpm. It was all a show, though, it was just for fun and to give the kids entertainment.
@@JosefHerrenhäusermann58 How much torque does an AC HD 41 put out, in its lowest gear, at its optimum rpm? I couldn't find that information. You are correct. It appears that steamers do put out a lot of low rpm torque, but have some difficulty maintaining that low rpm, past a certain amount of load, if they keep traction. I love this 150 hp Case. It is very impressive at pulling, but like everything, it has its limits.
Maybe I'm getting old but the 1st thing that i thought was how dangerous it is to not only be so close to a cable is such tension but the carelessness jumping over the cable and moving all around. That is a lot of force on that cable and it would have killed multiple people had it snapped. Thankfully that didn't happen but the lack of care is surprising to me.
@@ritterjonNot much tractoring for me but it’s still getting use , my daughter and friends using it for the barn build. I can crutch all around the Cay now so definitely doing some better. All the best from the Cay! Mark and Mari 🌴😊👍🏼🇺🇸🇨🇦

100% correct, which makes me bored because I wanted to see a real tug of war.
Wasted my data for nothing.
Yes, you 100% right if the AC was in gear the tracks would have been spinning/turning

Fact the Dozer would win period if it was in gear
That steam tractor pulling that dozer in nutrural is impressive

No chance even if the HP was the same, the torque converter would have made it impossible
The crawler is pulling up on the drawbar of the Steamer. The cable should be level to be equal.
10-4
Traction was not the problem the steamer came to a standstill without spinning its wheels
To think of all the work each of those two machines have done. Just think if people had to do that work with a shovel. Great show, wish I could be there.

Not a tug of war, the Allis Chalmers was in neutral
kind of feels like the guy in the bulldozer wasn't really trying.
It wasn't even a close match that dozer had way more traction than the tractor
That Allis would pull that thing around the block.
Or in half, depending on its mood
I see the Allis never really rolled smoke: it's not working hard. But it made a nice show for the people.
The dozer wasn't even running....
@daveanderson2316 I don't know about that for sure but it would be more interesting to watch....That would be a show!
No comparison
The result was easy to predict: Traction rules, not power. No wheeled machine can out pull a big cat.

That cable is way to small for the size of that equipment
If the steam engine had equal amout of wheel surface on the ground as the Dozer Tracks then it would be a fair pull...
Probably true!
Keep on tractoring!
It's a neat old machine but that dozer would kill it
Lucky cable didn't break and cut someone in half very stupid thing to do
Obviously you did not notice the pieces of carpet hanging off the cable. They would stop the cable from wipping through the air.
The steam tractor was at a disadvanage because the cable was hooked up higher, the cable should have been level.
Very good point!
If the steam engine was tracked and the same weight he would drag that dozer up a mountain. Steam has significantly more energy potential than diesel.
