Should the light blue wire from the ignition switch have 12v with the ignition on or should that be a ground interrupt? I've just installed a new coil on my machine and when I connected the blue wire to the coil, it gets extremely hot
On a Briggs 16hp the coil goes to the M terminal for “magneto” and shorts to ground when turned off. If 12v goes to a briggs coil it will short it out . You may have the wrong ignition switch. May sure you have a magneto ignition switch and not a battery switch. The difference is battery has an I terminal got ignition that send 12v to a coil where as the magneto had the M terminal. Usually the blue wire goes to the solenoid I think.
I wish I had checked into the key switch on my 8162B. It cranked but no spark. I rewired it like a Kohler. That made nice white smoke come out from behind the flywheel real fast. Don't try that at home. Suggestions as to where to get a replacement coil?
I just went through the same thing with my 5660. This is why I make sure my machine is covered or inside now. I popped the old one apart and found it was super corroded. $10 shipped on ebay. Part # 19223 / 3115200
Nice fix! I did this on my 812 last year. Works great.
Love the vids I’m working on my gravely with electrical problems thanks
L Parsons I am glad you liked. Hopefully they get you fixed up
