"September 21, 1999 - Knowing the importance of the RPG contingent in the game world because of its PlayStation experience, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc has planned at least one RPG for its March 4, 2000 debut of PlayStation 2, a game by the name of Dark Cloud.
[...]
What makes Dark Cloud so intriguing isn't the graphics, which look as good as those seen on a Dreamcast or high-end PC. The hook here is the game's Georama system, which enables players to create their own town using several onscreen tools. The central character's 'plot in life' if you will is to build up his island, creating a village, complete with houses, hills, churches, temples, volcanoes, streams, and even a choice of weather. Players can build paths, bridges, windmills, and other necessary structures as well, and if they're unhappy with them, a hammer-like tool can be used to destroy them and rebuild.
Reminiscent of Legend of Mana's land-make system, the Georama system also does something extremely compelling. By using a combination of Select and other buttons, players use a menu-based system to create their village, and once you're finished your player can immediately adventure in it. The camera zooms from the isometric map to the actual playfield in a sweet, graphic effect never seen before. The system is extremely easy to use, and it's relatively quick, too. Unfortunately, no battle scenes were available for play at the show. So, it's unclear right now whether the battles are real time or turn-based.
From the playable demo at the Tokyo Game Show, much your time isn't so much required for building as it is making allies and clearing out baddies from neighboring towns. With this angle, you'll create a coalition of villages for a final confrontation with the evil kingdom that's stolen your land.
The magic carpet scene introducing the game provides an excellent link to knowing how the main character travels from air to land and back. We'll have more soon."

0:07 for being 1999, those water graphics actually look 1080p
True
Well we can confirm one thing.
The sounds didn't change at all haha
Yeah haha
saw this first time on sony press conference back in 2000 when they revealed the ps2
I remember when I first saw this trailer back then I thought it was the most beautiful graphics I had ever seen running realtime. Hell even the water looks good by nowadays standard! Surely there was some pc on steroids to render that.
dark cloud 3 needs to happen.
The sky-based village and even a dungeon counterpart would be a cool idea for Dark Cloud 3 as we see a sky-based village in this video.
I know this comment if 4 years old now but, YES!
how lucky for those people who live in a universe where dark cloud 3 is released
Wow, it's amazing how different this is from the final version that was released. This looked kind of cool to be honest.
Oh ok you're a child grow up little boy if you got to brag you probably don't have it
Gregory Alan Bailey it is kinda kl but no where near the final cool... and no one can replace my green poncho friend.. not even link
iets actually a mix between DC andere DC 2
The final game is a freaking masterpiece, I spend hours in it. Too bad Dark Cloud 2 didn't had that affect on me for some reason, the annoying tasks after every dungeon was pretty tedious, like the Spheda shit.
I totally get you, level 5 put together epicness in the first game
The water looks too amazingly detailed for something from 1999.
God I wish I could get my hands on this build of the game. Dark Cloud 1 & 2 are my favorite video games of all time.
I still come back to this video :) there's a few other higher quality captures out there, but this is still a classic channel to watch it on.
They took away jumping, flying, and swimming. I like the way this guy looked.
When you think about it the jumping element would piss you off sometimes, I can't imagine trying to get around Yellow Drops falling off the walkway and having to repeatedly jump back up...
All in all I love how it was now ^^
I liked Toan's outfit in the final version. The green hat is his trademark, it's what sets him apart!
his movements are better then in the final version
this version looked so much better, its amazing what looked great back in 2000
20 Years of Dark Cloud (2000-2020)
I want a sequel NOW!
Not gonna argue with that one, Max totally rocked in the second game, I'm actually playing DC2 as we speak.
this is the first version of dark cloud one. you can tell by "Toan"'s outfit. all that was changed was his hair color, the shine in his hair (both seen in the first gameplay of the actual dark cloud 1) and the green, three clothed hat.
omg that brings me back o wow i miss that game.
Wow, this looks so much better than the actual game! Bunkka! The magic carpet aspect looks very interesting.
is it just me or does that look so fking awesome...god i wish they add some of those feature in the final product
Amazing graphics for 1999!!!
This is one of my favorite games of all time, but after watching this video I'm shocked to see that some things were actually better here then in the final release! For example, the houses shown in this video look 10 times cooler then any of the houses in the final release, you could apparently jump, go into the water at Brownboo Village, and even place volcanos! Also, how the hell is it that the graphics actually look BETTER? It just makes no sense whatsoever.
I would love to know which elements of the story had to be taken out in the final product. I WANTED TO RIDE ON A MAGIC CARPET
You can have the Old Character with a Action Replay Code! But No Carpet I'm sorry...
lampshades120 a glitch hapen to me at norune.. i jumped out of sight and land in the pool
I feel like the final dungeon where you fight the Dark Genie trolled me and other players. It had magic carpets that could take you over to the Backstage areas, but due to a glitch on the game disc, you can't even get enemies to drop the Feather Duster Items that would actually LET YOU RIDE THEM.
this game and dark chronicle are so niceeeeee
One my all time favorite games
Damn, this actually looks better than the final product. They took away his flying carpet, but kept his poncho...
Sorry, but this is one of my favorite rpgs of all time. I cant stand when someone trashtalk this excellent piece of software made by level5, that created other marvelous games: Professor Layton series DQ8 and 9, Rogue Galaxy, etc.
crap! that looked like it would be such a fun place to built. it was huge!
This statement...so true...
The town creation system in Dark Cloud is unique, but what got me interested in it was being able to power up weapons and change them into different weapons.
To my friend who hated Dark Cloud:
Like it or hate it.
Love it or leave.
Toan is the man,
You better fucking believe it.
Interesting. There are elements of it in the official game, such as the sounds and characters (i.e., the lady in the wide-brimmed hat looks like Alnet; Brownboo Village looks the same) but they really changed the look of Toan. I wish they had kept the magic carpet in the game!
The building system loks alot better than in the first one.. you have more variety
@SahjanS i agree, especially on the jumping
The magic carpet actually makes it into the game(dark heaven castle) and it can only be used with the flapping duster(a glitch item) and it's purple instead of red.
Boy howdy, it's a shame this design didn't make the final game. I actually like the way Toan looks here, who knows, maybe this will come to life again sometime on the PS3 huh?
Wow!!! brings back memories!
Wow. Never knew this. Cool!
It's so odd, to look at this trailer, and to look back at the final product. There were no carpets or jumping (outside of the dungeon) and this kid looks younger. Yet, oddly enough, I think that the final product is just as amazing without those functions. :) Like this is you agree with me.
You can actually jump in water. This is, in my opinion, better than the original one.
WHAT? There's a third one? Sweet! I loved this game back then.
Wow, the georama in the beta is much more reminiscent of Dark Cloud 2 than of the first one. I wonder what caused the change between the beta and the final release?
i love this game ever since i first plyd a demo ive wantedit i got he game now completed it just one thing that dark paldin guy i cn never seem to beat him ahhhhh
one of the best fucking games ever on ps2 in my opinion
@jerkz10 Yeah, they should've kept this kind of building configuration, i mean the way that it looked in this game made it seem like you could build a whole city with the simplest things that were given in this version!
I think they should have made a Dark Cloud stand-alone title where you could make your own villages and dungeons from scratch and/or pre-made material. They should make the next one for the PS3 and have this in there but with the added feature of multiplayer, so it will be a bit like Little Big Planet where as you can create your towns and dungeons, share them with friends, and play with others in these towns and dungeons.
the said thing is most of these ideas were scraped in the final verison we have all played or seen on youtube
Nice game, I remember asking for a Zelda like game and they gave me this one!
Gosh I wish they had stuck with this D:
wish they've stuck with this? it looked awesome!
1999!! Wow! That is old. I wonder why there is no Dark Cloud 3.
Am I the only one who thinks the beta looks better than the release? I like the jumping, but not the typical anime hair. I also like the georama system better than the one that's in the actual game.
Also, I have an odd obsession with the geostones. Orbish :D
this has excellent graphics considering when it was made!
you should go back and finish it.. best game ever for the ps2
my favorite game of all time and the sequal as well. It so simple in story, art, characters, and game mechanics yet it is more satisfying than most polished games like kingdom hearts. dudes who made this game really kick ass and should develop a third game. I actually don;t play consoles anymore and don't own any, but if a DC3 was made I'd buy it just to play at a friends place for a few weeks.
i showed this to my friend and he said "omg, those graphics suck...". then i told him that this game is ~10 years old and he was "omg, those graphics are epic!"
Ugy Boogie What a toolbag
This looks better than the real thing! 0.0
whoa
He's the same, cept for that green beret.
WOW!
I wish you could place volcanoes in the final version. riding a carpet might be interesting too...
I remember seeing a screenshot of the flying carpet in a game magazine a long time ago...It'd have been awesome if they'd kept it this way. The map looks much more impressive and Toan's(?) body has more movement/motion when he runs, whereas in the released version he looks stiff.
I imagine DC would have gotten better ratings had they stuck with this...because it looks very impressive.
"Unfortunately, no battle scenes were available for play at the show. So, it's unclear right now whether the battles are real time or turn-based."
@Suprememessage Yes it did, Seda created a time portal to send Toan through the corridor of time and on his way through the dungeon stopped by Sony and gave them the blueprints and idea for PS2.
Level-5 (Creaters of Dark Cloud) still haven't made a third one official, atleast not yet. But there is a very strong speculation and also there is a interview with one of the higher employees at Level-5 where they ask of a third part of Dark Cloud and they leave the question unanswered with a mysterious "maybe" :).
But I pray to God there will be one. That and Killzone 2 would be the best reasons to get a PS3 :D
The way he runs sorta reminded me of the game Gun.
well u have to remember this is the beta not the final..........
@BoomarangComet Yes, they were. Their called "Moon People" btw.
@IIXairII Your right :P But I think they should have kept it in this version but the cloths should be how it is now and still keep the flying carpet. And also keeping the dungeon fighting and duels :D
@GreyKeo
I'd only want a Dark Cloud 3 if Toan and co. were back. That was what really pissed me off about Dark Cloud 2 (so much that I didn't even play it, I don't need those fuckin' strangers)
dark cloud 1 for ps2 is the best ever
Why the fuck couldn't we have this instead of what we got? I mean you can jump, you can swim to some extent, and the plots of land are nice and big, AND you can build in hex format.
dark cloud 2 had the big space tot build
I Have No Name
Yeah, but the first game didn't.
+ultris07 true but you cant say they are bad games
+I Have No Name
I never said they were.
I was arguing that the beta build of Dark Cloud was better than its finished counterpart, minus a few unpolished designs, items, and ideas.
+ultris07 Yeah actually i think the main charachter is a good change but they should have let the other things the same.
i love the original a lot my #1 game on the ps2 but the graphics in the beta is far much better than the real game it's like RE 4 the beta it's have a way much better graphics than the final version of today.
you know, from the description you give, it sounds like this version had a completely different plot.
this is one of the best games for ps2. Does anyone know if Level 5 is ever gonna make dark cloud 3? So this is what the original was gonna look like?
So that's Toan. They should of stayed with this one. Man the Toan on the final product didn't look like hero material.
dark cloud 1 is the best game ever.
This beta one is VERY Different from the one now, Dark Cloud 2 (Dark Chronicle) is VERY Good, Especially the music, it'd be nice if someone found the "Time is Changing" sheet music (main theme for Dark Chronicle. But, looking forward to DC 3.
II am honestly disappointed that i never got a floating island to make a custom village on
@BrokenAeros I don't see why it would be for the Wii. These games were made for the Playstation consoles, so we should assume it to come out on the PS3, if it comes out at all.
lmao im glad they came out with a better version this is my fav game of all time
ive noticed some of the comments below about jumping and well.....i love games where you can jump but just think about how different the game would be just from that one little change?now if the change is for better or for worse i dont know but still the designers might have had a reason for taking it out
no way this could 1999 with those graphics wtf like.
1:06 We don't get to go in water in that village... ;_;
This is really cool!
@kojeen1
The Black Knight Pendragon is Toan's father, use Xiao's "Steve" weapon when fighting him.
true
wait.....when are you able to build in the huge floating field? i really want to know. i have the game and im on like the last level where you get the memory of that guy in the castle. do you get the field after you beat the game?
Oh, Wired!
He could jump. Ok time to bust a hole in level-5's head
Haha! Yeah, you right! xD
But.. the jump?! Oh shit.. O_O
This DC it's wonderful!
he could run without a drans feather, jump in water and jump WHAAA?! D: this looks so different yet adoringly similar :)
Looks very intresting i think^^
Wow, I had no idea this even existed. I played Dark Cloud and considered Dark Cloud 2 but didn't like the character change.
@elementalsorcerer113 No offense taken...i'm used to it and i deserve it.
wow, too bad that i can't have the new systems - well, in fact i can but for now i'm fine with my Genesis, PS2 and some PC games.
Glad to see that many gamers still playing old school stuff like us. =)
@kojeen1
He says something like "You may know this man" or something like that. And he has the same weapon has Toan's father.
Why are the animations in this better than the final releases?
Glad they changed it.
