Gutten Tag my German friends. We are both Germanic peoples and thus blood brothers. If the world falls into conflict again for a 3rd time i am confident to say we will be fighting alongside one-another. From your Anglo-Saxon cousins

Markel has made some poor decisions giving the green light to the far right! Not to mention supporting some highly dubious southern european countries in their entry claim to the EU. Countries first defeated by the Nazis in their pursuit of oil etc. Stop tweeking Russian's nose. Are you mad?

Military bands and march music are meant to bring out the pride and passions of people in their respective countries whether it is pipe bands or brass bands. Long live these bands and pageants that make up our history.

@about 14.10 the Rupert gave the wrong order (commentator was speaking over it). The look of anguish clearly visible on his face - despite bearskin and chinstrap! But, the troops "disobeyed him" and stood stock still, until he remembered to order the "change arms" before marching!!! Brilliant for such young, new recruits (mostly 18-19). Not for the first time a Subaltern rescued by his own men (possibly with some muttering from the sergeants).

    • @schattensand
      @schattensand 10 років тому

When did he speak over it? He speaks every year exact the same, almost word for word. He would never dare to talk about a wrong order or any mishap unless somebody faints or so and he would not notice it too.

    • @ToCGambler
      @ToCGambler 10 років тому

They did not disobey him and even if the Subaltern gave the wrong word of command, they would have obeyed and advanced without changing arms. The Subaltern 'rescued' himself. He said: 'Escort to the Colour will advance, by the centre,....' and didn't command the march yet. He just interrupted his wrong order and gave the right word of command.

Generals do not win wars only junior officers, warrant officers, senior NCOs, Junior NCOs and private soldiers. The tommies, Taffies, paddies, jocks an jonny Gurkha are the ones who have weon battles, campaigns and wars down through the centuries.

As I write these last words, my thoughts return to you who were my comrades, the stubborn and indomitable peasants of Nepal. Once more I hear the laughter with which you greeted every hardship. Once more I see you in your bivouacs or about your fires, on forced march or in the trenches, now shivering with wet and cold, now scorched by a pitiless and burning sun. Uncomplaining you endure hunger and thirst and wounds; and at the last your unwavering lines disappear into the smoke and wrath of battle. Bravest of the brave, most generous of the generous, never had country more faithful friends than you.

Sorry, sehe Deinen Kommentar (warum auch immer) erst jetzt - solid copy on all.

Here's forty shillings on the drum
For those who volunteer to come,
To 'list and fight the foe today
Over the Hills and far away
    [Chorus]
O'er the hills and o'er the main
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain
King George commands and we obey
Over the hills and far away
When duty calls me I must go
To stand and face another foe
But part of me will always stray
Over the hills and far away
    [Chorus]
If I should fall to rise no more
    As many comrades did before
Then ask the pipes and drums to play
Over the hills and far away
    [Chorus]
Then fall in lads behind the drum
With colours blazing like the sun
Along the road to come what may
Over the hills and far away
    [Chorus] X4

It's worth looking up the earlier words to the song; there's a youtube vid of 'Over the hills and far away' traditional 17th century 'Queen Anne demands and we all say-'
It's about how soldiers escape bad masters, wives and children, etc. by joining the army.
'Apprentice Tom may now refuse, to wipe his scoundrel master's shoes-'
'A man may live a happy life, by getting rid of brats and wife-'
All of course being the sick joke that he's heading for worse than those.

Oh Polly love, oh Polly, the rout has now begun
And we must march away at the beating of the drum
Go dress yourself in all your best and come along with me
I'll take you to the cruel wars in High Germany
I fear the treacherous journey bitter cold and burning heat
Rough roads and stony mountains they will wound my tender feet
To your kinsmen I might prove untrue if from them I do go
For maids must bide at their parents' side while the men do face the foe.
I'll buy for you a horse, my love, and on it you will ride
Then all of my contentment shall be riding at my side
We'll stop at every ale-house and drink when we are dry
So quickly on the road, my love, and marry by and by
Oh Billy love, oh Billy, now mind what I do say
My feet they are so tired I cannot go away
Besides, my dearest Billy, I am with child by thee
Not fitting for the cruel wars in High Germany
Oh Polly love, oh Polly, I love you very well
There are few in any place my Polly can excel
And when your babe is born and sits smiling on your knee
You will think on your Billy that's in High Germany
Oh Cursed be the cruel wars that ever they began
For they have pressed my Billy and many a clever man
For they have pressed my Billy likewise my brothers three
And sent them to the cruel wars in High Germany

    Gentlmen-Rankers
To the legion of the lost ones, to the cohort of the damned,
To my brethren in their sorrow overseas,
Sings a gentleman of England cleanly bred, machinely crammed,
And a trooper of the Empress, if you please.
Yea, a trooper of the forces who has run his own six horses,
And faith he went the pace and went it blind,
And the world was more than kin while he held the ready tin,
But to-day the Sergeant's something less than kind.
We're poor little lambs who've lost our way,
    Baa! Baa! Baa!
We're little black sheep who've gone astray,
    Baa--aa--aa!
    Gentlemen-rankers out on the spree,
    Damned from here to Eternity,
God ha' mercy on such as we,
    Baa! Yah! Bah!
Oh, it's sweet to sweat through stables, sweet to empty kitchen slops,
And it's sweet to hear the tales the troopers tell,
To dance with blowzy housemaids at the regimental hops
And thrash the cad who says you waltz too well.
Yes, it makes you cock-a-hoop to be "Rider" to your troop,
And branded with a blasted worsted spur,
When you envy, O how keenly, one poor Tommy living cleanly
Who blacks your boots and sometimes calls you "Sir".
If the home we never write to, and the oaths we never keep,
And all we know most distant and most dear,
Across the snoring barrack-room return to break our sleep,
Can you blame us if we soak ourselves in beer?
When the drunken comrade mutters and the great guard-lantern gutters
And the horror of our fall is written plain,
Every secret, self-revealing on the aching white-washed ceiling,
Do you wonder that we drug ourselves from pain?
We have done with Hope and Honour, we are lost to Love and Truth,
We are dropping down the ladder rung by rung,
And the measure of our torment is the measure of our youth.
God help us, for we knew the worst too young!
Our shame is clean repentance for the crime that brought the sentence,
Our pride it is to know no spur of pride,
And the Curse of Reuben holds us till an alien turf enfolds us
And we die, and none can tell Them where we died.
We're poor little lambs who've lost our way,
    Baa! Baa! Baa!
We're little black sheep who've gone astray,
    Baa--aa--aa!
    Gentlemen-rankers out on the spree,
    Damned from here to Eternity,
God ha' mercy on such as we,
    Baa! Yah! Bah!

Some of the guards uniform style like the cuff decoration and the style of shoulder lapel was worn by German Wehrmacht grenadiers.
Is this style German originally, possibly Hanoverian ?

    • @BismarcksOtto
      @BismarcksOtto 10 років тому +2

Not so typically German, actually: This "pointy" cuff style is known as the "Neuchatel Cuff", in Germany - the only outfit that wore it during the Second Empire was, if I recall it correctly, the Guards Rifles - an especially interesting little battalion of light infantry. They originally hailed from the (Protestant) principality of Neuchatel in Switzerland, which the kings of Prussia used to rule in personal union until Napoleon got his hands on it. All other infantry of the German states wore the "straight" Brandenburg Cuffs or the "low" Swedish Cuffs.

Uniform fashions cross national borders like all clothing fashions do.
Bandsmen wear red and white shoulders, cuffs have fake buttons and lace in colours, the linings of jackets shown by 'turnbacks' have faded away, though.
Collars still have lines with coloured 'lights' leitzen between them, though.

Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules
Of Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these.
But of all the world's great heroes, there's none that can compare.
With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, to the British Grenadiers.
Those heroes of antiquity ne'er saw a cannon ball,
Or knew the force of powder to slay their foes withal.
But our brave boys do know it, and banish all their fears,
With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, for the British Grenadiers.
Whene'er we are commanded to storm the palisades,
Our leaders march with fusees, and we with hand grenades.
We throw them from the glacis, about the enemies' ears*.
Sing tow, row, row, row, row, row, the British Grenadiers.
And when the siege is over, we to the town repair.
The townsmen cry, "Hurrah, boys, here comes a Grenadier!
Here come the Grenadiers, my boys, who know no doubts or fears!
Then sing tow, row, row, row, row, row, the British Grenadiers.
Then let us fill a bumper, and drink a health of those
Who carry caps and pouches, and wear the loupèd clothes.
May they and their commanders live happy all their years.
With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, for the British Grenadiers."

    "Back To the Army Again"
I'm 'ere in a ticky ulster an' a broken billycock 'at,
    A-layin' on the sergeant I don't know a gun from a bat;
My shirt's doin' duty for jacket, my sock's stickin' out o' my boots,
An' I'm learnin' the damned old goose-step along o' the new recruits!
    Back to Army again, sergeant,
    Back to the Army again.
Don't look so 'ard, for I 'aven't no card,
I'm back to the Army again!
I done my six years' service. 'Er Majesty sez: "Good day --
You'll please to come when you're rung for, an' 'ere's your 'ole back-pay:
    An' fourpence a day for baccy -- an' bloomin' gen'rous, too;
An' now you can make your fortune -- the same as your orf'cers do."
Back to the Army again, sergeant,
    Back to the Army again.
'Ow did I learn to do right-about-turn?
I'm back to the Army again!
    A man o' four-an'-twenty that 'asn't learned of a trade --
Beside "Reserve" agin' him -- 'e'd better be never made.
I tried my luck for a quarter, an' that was enough for me,
An' I thought of 'Er Majesty's barricks, an' I thought I'd go an' see.
Back to the Army again, sergeant,
    Back to the Army again.
'Tisn't my fault if I dress when I 'alt --
I'm back to the Army again!
The sergeant arst no questions, but 'e winked the other eye,
    'E sez to me, " 'Shun!" an' I shunted, the same as in days gone by;
For 'e saw the set o' my shoulders, an' I couldn't 'elp 'oldin' straight
When me an' the other rookies come under the barrik-gate.
Back to the Army again, sergeant,
    Back to the Army again.
'Oo would ha' thought I could carry an' port?
I'm back to the Army again!
I took my bath, an' I wallered -- for, Gawd, I needed it so!
I smelt the smell o' the barricks, I 'eard the bugles go.
I 'eard the feet on the gravel -- the feet o' the men what drill --
An' I sez to my flutterin' 'eart-strings, I sez to 'em, "Peace, be still!"
Back to the Army again, sergeant,
    Back to the Army again.
'Oo said I knew when the troopship was due?
I'm back to the Army again!
I carried my slops to the tailor; I sez to 'im, "None o' your lip!
You tight 'em over the shoulders, an' loose 'em over the 'ip,
For the set o' the tunic's 'orrid." An' 'e sez to me, "Strike me dead,
But I thought you was used to the business!" an' so 'e done what I said.
Back to the Army again, sergeant,
    Back to the Army again.
Rather too free with my fancies? Wot -- me?
I'm back to the Army again!
    Next week I'll 'ave 'em fitted; I'll buy me a swagger-cane;
They'll let me free o' the barricks to walk on the Hoe again,
In the name o' William Parsons, that used to be Edward Clay,
An' -- any pore beggar that wants it can draw my fourpence a day!
Back to the Army again, sergeant,
    Back to the Army again.
Out o' the cold an' the rain, sergeant,
Out o' the cold an' the rain.
    'Oo's there?
A man that's too good to be lost you,
A man that is 'andled an' made --
A man that will pay what 'e cost you
In learnin' the others their trade -- parade!
You're droppin' the pick o' the Army
Because you don't 'elp 'em remain,
But drives 'em to cheat to get out o' the street
An' back to the Army again!

the Massed Bands to start their march.
The Guards, after standing at attention, change arms. Under the command of the Senior Drum Major, the Massed Bands march and countermarch on Horse Guards Parade in slow and quick time. The slow march music is traditionally the Waltz from Les Huguenots. During the quick march, a lone drummer from the Corps of Drums breaks away from the massed bands, marching to two paces to the right of No. 1 Guard to take his post while the band marches on.

In a station in the city a British soldier stood
Talking to the people there if the people would
Some just stared in hatred, and others turned in pain
And the lonely British soldier wished he was back home again
Come join the British Army! Said the posters in his town
See the world and have your fun come serve before the Crown
The jobs were hard to come by and he could not face the dole
So he took his country's shilling and enlisted on the roll
For there was no fear of fighting, the Empire long was lost
Just ten years in the army getting paid for being bossed
Then leave a man experienced a man who's made the grade
A medal and a pension some mem'ries and a trade
Then came the call to Ireland as the call had come before
Another bloody chapter in an endless civil war
The priests they stood on both sides the priests they stood behind
Another fight in Jesus name the blind against the blind
The soldier stood between them between the whistling stones
And then the broken bottles that led to broken bones
The petrol bombs that burnt his hands the nails that pierced his skin
And wished that he had stayed at home surrounded by his kin
The station filled with people the soldier soon was bored
But better in the station than where the people warred
The room filled up with mothers with daughters and with sons
Who stared with itchy fingers at the soldier and his gun
A yell of fear a screech of brakes the shattering of glass
The window of the station broke to let the package pass
A scream came from the mothers as they ran towards the door
Dragging children crying from the bomb upon the floor
The soldier stood and could not move his gun he could not use
He knew the bomb had seconds and not minutes on the fuse
He could not run to pick it up and throw it in the street
There were far too many people there too many running feet
Take cover! Yelled the soldier, Take cover for your lives
And the Irishmen threw down their young and stood before their wives
They turned towards the soldier their eyes alive with fear
For God's sake save our children or they'll end their short lives here
The soldier moved towards the bomb his stomach like a stone
Why was this his battle God why was he alone
He lay down on the package and he murmured one farewell
To those at home in England to those he loved so well
He saw the sights of summer felt the wind upon his brow
The young girls in the city parks how precious were they now
The soaring of the swallow the beauty of the swan
The music of the turning world so soon would it be gone
A muffled soft explosion and the room began to quake
The soldier blown across the floor his blood a crimson lake
They never heard him cry or shout they never heard him moan
And they turned their children's faces from the blood and from the bones
The crowd outside soon gathered and the ambulances came
To carry off the body of a pawn lost in the game
And the crowd they clapped and cheered and they sang their rebel songs
One soldier less to interfere where he did not belong
But will the children growing up learn at their mothers' knees
The story of the soldier who bought their liberty
Who used his youthful body as a means towards an end
Who gave his life to those who called him murderer not friend

    The Widow at Windsor
'Ave you 'eard o' the Widow at Windsor
With a hairy gold crown on 'er 'ead?
She 'as ships on the foam -- she 'as millions at 'ome,
An' she pays us poor beggars in red.
    (Ow, poor beggars in red!)
There's 'er nick on the cavalry 'orses,
There's 'er mark on the medical stores --
An' 'er troopers you'll find with a fair wind be'ind
That takes us to various wars.
    (Poor beggars! -- barbarious wars!)
Then 'ere's to the Widow at Windsor,
An' 'ere's to the stores an' the guns,
The men an' the 'orses what makes up the forces
    O' Missis Victorier's sons.
    (Poor beggars! Victorier's sons!)
Walk wide o' the Widow at Windsor,
For 'alf o' Creation she owns:
We 'ave bought 'er the same with the sword an' the flame,
An' we've salted it down with our bones.
(Poor beggars! -- it's blue with our bones!)
Hands off o' the sons o' the Widow,
Hands off o' the goods in 'er shop,
For the Kings must come down an' the Emperors frown
When the Widow at Windsor says "Stop"!
(Poor beggars! -- we're sent to say "Stop"!)
Then 'ere's to the Lodge o' the Widow,
From the Pole to the Tropics it runs --
To the Lodge that we tile with the rank an' the file,
An' open in form with the guns.
(Poor beggars! -- it's always they guns!)
We 'ave 'eard o' the Widow at Windsor,
It's safest to let 'er alone:
For 'er sentries we stand by the sea an' the land
    Wherever the bugles are blown.
(Poor beggars! -- an' don't we get blown!)
Take 'old o' the Wings o' the Mornin',
    An' flop round the earth till you're dead;
But you won't get away from the tune that they play
To the bloomin' old rag over'ead.
    (Poor beggars! -- it's 'ot over'ead!)
Then 'ere's to the sons o' the Widow,
    Wherever, 'owever they roam.
'Ere's all they desire, an' if they require
A speedy return to their 'ome.
(Poor beggars! -- they'll never see 'ome!)

you're mistaken I'm afraid, they don't wear that in modern combat, the last time the British army would have worn red when in combat would have been the zulu wars/Boer wars during the Victorian era. the reason they war bright red was to avoid friendly fire in the thick smoke from musket and cannon fire, and the large bearskin helmets were to confuse charging cavalry, and make them aim higher than the head really was, obviously war has changed and clothing has too, they only wear the red and large hats for parade and ceremonies because of military tradition. that's it, of course not all branches of the British military wear this during parades, just look at a RAF parade or a Royal Navy parade.

Hello,Tim. Back in '75, my ship pulled into Edinburgh. (USS Milwaukee AOR2) The people of Edinburgh treated us as they were there own. I could not pay for drink in a pub. We had to go on liberty in uniform. Me and a shipmate of mine attended a concert. You should have seen the people, and the performers, when we popped tall and saluted when they played "God Save the Queen". Palm down , of course. (LOL). =Stefan=

This Army has fought more wars than all the worlds armies combined be they ancient are modern world. Fact. Since 1945 they have fought more wars than most other none british empire/commwealth Army has in there entire history. They are the 2nd best paid in the world after Australia another really great Army based upon British traditions and training and their own traditions also. The guards do just 2 additional weeks ceremonial drill training but otherwise they undergo the same 26 week combat infantrymans course has all other British Infantry regiments other than the Parachute Regiment which doeas 30 weeks. The royal navies corps of royal marines commados do 33 weeks. After that there is far more additional training.

How beautiful the German music is ! The Germans are genetically programmed to be great musicians. Nothing more incredibly beautiful than the music of their romantic masters : Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Carl Maria von Weber, Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn-Bertholdy, Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner. And Anton Bruckner, Austrian, still Germanic, the Strauß family, all of them, Joseph Lanner, Austrian also and though classic but a giant, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, also Austrian. ALL OF THEM GREAT. WHAT THE MUSICAL WORLD WOULD BE WITHOUT THEM. GERMANS, YES BUT UNIVERSAL IN THE HEARTS OF ALL MEN.

The Russians and Chinese might march slightly better but the British have a proudest tradition and always will. It shows here in this video. The sun may have set of the British empire when at a point in time, it never set. Like Japan and Germany, the sun may rise again for the United Kingdom but regardless, they will never be slaves, never ever !

Russians and Chinese march like they do because there's a gun at the back of their head. The British march spectacularly because they love their Monarch. God Save the Queen.

The pageantry and military music and precision would be much improved if the commentator would just shut his mouth, or at least put it further into the background. He just cuts the music clear off when he speaks SHUTENZIE UPPEN

As a former soldier and sailor trained to high British standards I must say the lines were very poor. The officers not able to hold swords 'properly' In our time 25 years ago the RSM and parade commander would be beside themselves..BUT the Queen looked pleased.. or has she learnt to accept lower standards?

It's not just this slipping standards its society as a whole. Personally I blame the EU. Why? Because I've got a chip on my shoulder and I want the UK out of the EU, OK?

During a war, the Guards have only a few days to get ready for ceremonials: it's amazing they can do something like this with such little preparation.
Served in the RAF and was called upon to parade in a small way, platoon strength, for heads of state who came through our airfield (most weeks), we usually had a day to prepare, and usually didn't embarrass ourselves.
Around the time of Prince Charles' and Lady Diana's wedding it got quite frenetic.
It was an extra duty, not my profession, which was mapmaking and printing.

that song they were playing in 1:47 is a song of the protestant reformation its a christian hymn, called "a mighty fortress is our God" . I love that song. the protestant reformer Martin Luther wrote that song.

Actually, the march they played is French and it is called Les Huguenots. Although, you are not entirely wrong, as a part of the march does bear a great resemblance to the song you are referencing, possibly meaning that that part of Les Huguenots was written with that song in mind.

    Tommy
    I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
    O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.
I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
    They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
    For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.
Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
    Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.
We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
    But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
    Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.
You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
    But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
    An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

Auf Minute 13:56 bis 14:11 sieht man, wie der kommandierende Offizier einen Fehler macht: Er kommandiert: "Escort for the colour will advance - by the center …", bemerkt dann seinen Fehler, verzieht schmerzhaft das Gesicht und kommandiert dann richtig: "Change - arms!", um danach wieder, und dann ebenfalls richtig, neu mit "Escort for the colour will advance - by the center - slooooow - march!" fortzufahren.
