  • The Trooping the Colour ceremony is over 200 years old. At that time the flags served as rallying points clearly visible on the dusty battlefield. The trooping of the flags and the ensigns of the regiments enabled the soldiers to recognize their regiments' colors. This custom has survived to this day and is an event for tourists from all around the world.
    In Canada, a Trooping the Colour ceremony is held on the last weekend in May - Victoria Day - in honor of the Queen's Birthday. The last Trooping of The Colour ceremony on the parliament hill usually takes place the last weekend of public duties in August.
    The Parliament Hill in Ottawa forms the ideal scenery for the impressive military ceremony. Enjoy impressions of the more than one-hour ceremony.

    My husband was a very proud Guardsman.... 2nd. Battalion Cdn. Gds. In spring when they were preparing for the Hill the sound of the Pipes and Drums floating across the Parade Square and into my bedroom early mornings is something I shall always remember with a smile.

    The Colour being trooped during the parade is the Regimental Colour of the Governor General's Foot Guards, where the Colonel in Chief is HM Queen Elisabeth II. The flag with the blue background shows the badge of the Governor General's Foot Guards" .
    On the second flag is the badge of the Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians).

    Does this old Crab (ex RAF) good to see Trooping done so well and honouring Canada's traditions and its great military. @ 9:13 its the same change of rank as at Horseguards in London on the Queen's Birthday Trooping. Ceremonial drill will always have its place and those who live elsewhere and don't understand will never understand and never feel that pride and respect it provides. Their loss.

    Simply brilliant especially on grass , which is bloddy hard work to keep in step, as i found out in Episkopi Garrison Cyprus , when we had a very big parade of the various Corps , and all the big boys were there , and my Regiment the Royal Corp of Signals really stuffed it up on grass , we were all out of step , so for the next few weeks we had drill , made no difference , that was in 1960 at Happy Valley our sportsgrounds . PS maybe it could have been better if we marched to a Highland Pipe Band , as i am a Scot.

    better yet our Canadian Grenadier Guards were once British Grenadiers Gurads that were stationed during the days when we were British North America. As such we kept the uniform& traditions of the British Grenadiers (red tunic, bearskin, grenade flash, march tune "the British Grenadiers) we never 'copied' off them as this simpleton "ben coates" implied. Were merely carrying on what was once a garrison of British Grenadiers.

    Its the Coldstream and Scots Guards that have bagpipes in their bands. Similar tunics but subtle differences in buttons, flashes and bearskins.

    the Canadian Grenadier Guards and the Governor General's Foot Guards seen here are both reserve units, they are often referred to as "militia" units. the ranks of both these units need to be supplemented by members of other reserve and regular force units every summer in order to sufficiently man this specific task.

    Historically the 'Colour' was the rallying point and centre of the military action and where the centre of command was and so the colour was 'Trooped' up and down the ranks before any action so that every soldier could recognise it during the battle.
    The Canadian Grenadiers here are doing exactly the same as their fellow British Grenadiers do in London on the Queen's Birthday Trooping the Colour along with the other units of the Household Division.

    Not a Ceremony like this, but I have taken part of British Military Parades.
    In the UK as you probably might know Trooping The Colour takes place each year and is a Ceremony conducted by Troops of The Household Division (The Household Cavalry & The Five Regiments of Foot Guards). Canada being a member of the Commonwealth has a lot of traditions that date back to her colonial days, this being one of them.

      Exotic, Light is a American who is anglophobe so it's most likely he will throw everything against UK instead the facts prove that the majority (87%) of Canada wish to stay in the commonwealth. and he can't understand that all military forces of the commonwealth use the same uniform because of their own traidition.

    • @1chish
      @1chish 8 років тому +4

      +Light
      With respect it IS Canada's uniform and has been from when Canada was founded. That it also happens to be the British uniform is historical fact not ownership. Its why the USA continues to copy in so many ways (Drum Sergeant Majors with bearskins?) what was its own original uniform until went its own way.

    • @AirplaneDoctor_
      @AirplaneDoctor_ 7 років тому +1

      1chish Drum sergeant major is not a thing......you can have a sergeant major, a drum sergeant, or a drum major.....and....bearskin hats are worn in many armies, not just British or Canadian, it originates from grenadiers,so any army with grenadier traditions can wear it, even the US army.....

    • @1chish
      @1chish 7 років тому

      Airplane - With respect I think you are making precisely my point as well that ceremonial uniform is all about traditions and histories. I simply gave the example of the US Army where Bearskins are worn on ceremonial occasions because of their historical traditions and origins. As do the Canadians and the British and as you say do others.
      I didn't mention the others as the topic was about Canadian ceremonial uniforms and why it is worn and I extended the conversation to their Southern neighbours. Not sure why you pick me up on the particular rank of people as I was just giving an example not discussing Sergeant Majors.

    You are right. But Canada is still formaly member of the Commonwealth of Nations and Queen Elzabeth is Queen of Canada. " The Act also formally ended the "request and consent" provisions of the Statute of Westminster 1931 in relation to Canada, whereby the British parliament had a general power to pass laws extending to Canada at its own request." - Wikipedia

      little anecdote: Canadian citizenship only came into effect in 1947. Before that date, all Canadians had British citizenship (even Quebecers) 😉

    Just a curiosity that crossed my mind. Do us Canadians wear our tunics in a darker shade of red than the British?

    That's true and I think this is the same as written in Wikipedia. So if your comment means the comment from santospif then you are right too. It would not work.

    I think you are getting Militia mixed up with Household Division Soldiers(:

    I am surprised they have not done so. I thought our grenadiers would be there during the Jubilee, that would be a sight wouldnt it...
    Instead on Her Majesty's jubilee our Royal Canadian Mounted Police were on guard duty along with the Household cavalry. Proud moment for our RCMP.

    Well as someone who still lives in a very fine country whose Forces are second to none all I can say your generalisation of Great Britain is far from accurate. Especially Ceremonial duties. The Lads and Lasses at Maggie's funeral were all superb. You should have watched the US TV coverage of it and listened to the very high praise the gave. Anyway love the Aussies and don't think you are having the Ashes back mate!

    question to any person who knows as I can not rather be arsed with googling it, but what regiments or divisions of the army would participate in this trooping of the colour? I'm familiar with the household divisions in the UK but are these copied like a Canadian grenadiers or so on or are they different or just regular army personnel given ceremonial dress for this parade? ;.;

      Canada has 3 Guard regiments: Governor General's Foot Guards, Canadian Grenadier Guards, and Governor General's Horse Guards. Taking place here are the foot and Grenadier Guards. The actual soldiers in ranks are not all from those regiments though and are just on task for 5 months to the Guards. The GGFG and CGG are still the heavy regiments so to speak. GGHG have almost nil ceremonial presence unfortunately The 3 regiments are spread across Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

    I know Queen Elizabeth II is still Queen of Canada, hence the need for the Canadian Grenadier Guards but it isn't ruled by Westminster any more, it is ruled from the Crown and its own Parliament(:

    No doubt there, but the Lt/subaltern called them escort 'to' the colour, not 'for', which it was at that stage.
