I used 100% silk to dye. You can try out other materials or fabric and see how it turns out.
Steps:
1. Wash your fabric to remove anything that could ruin the dye process. I used synthrapol as my detergent.
2. Prep the alum - 1/4 cup to 1 gallon of water. Soak the fabric for 20-30 minutes in the alum.
3. Once the fabric has soaked for the allotted time, ring out and let dry. Do not rinse.
4. Prep your size - size is the thickened water that the dye rests on. 4 tsp of carrageenan to 1 gallon of water. I used a whisk to help break up the lumps. Let this mixture sit, I let mine rest for 4 hours.
5. Remove any lumps from the size. You can use a newspaper or paper towel to skim the top of the size.
6. Prep your dyes. I added mine to small bottles that I could use to drop onto the water. I thinned the dye down with synthetic gall.
7. Begin dropping the dye onto the size.
8. Use your marbling rake or other tools to make a design.
9. Put your fabric onto the dye and lift up.
10. Rinse out the carrageenan and any extra dye. Hang up to dry.
11. Use an iron to heat set the dye and fabric.
I had so much fun making the silk scarves. I had a lot of questions and wanted to do a verbal tutorial/walk through on how I did all of this. I tried to make it as clear as possible and I hope you can try it out too!
The process does take time and there is some trial and error to getting everything right, but the overall effect is really awesome.

Thank you for this tutorial I am doing marbling with my high school Fundamental of Arts students and New Town High School gave me a budget, so we are going to marble silk scarves this is incredible to say the least. May your business grow and you get all the blessing and good to come your way.
That sounds like it is going to be so much fun! I hope they enjoy the project!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have gone around and around UA-cam AND the jacquard site trying to figure out how to do this. I’ve been searching for about three weeks and your video (parts 1 and 2) is honestly the first thorough and clear description I have found. I can’t wait to get my Amazon delivery! 🌸 🥰
Random question - have you ever found a metallic Color to add to your silk scarves that actually Looks metallic when you are done?
Here's a suggestion that might handle the lumping/dissolve problem a little easier. A whisk works best down inside a container where it repeatedly impacts the sides, where you can stir quickly in a small circular motion. Consider putting your dry carrageenan in a "big gulp" type cup with just a portion of your total water to dissolve, and then stir your solution into the remaining bath. This idea comes from cooking, where you want to dissolve your cornstarch thickener in a shaker cup before stirring it into the larger pan, to avoid lumping. I think it might work since the carrageenan takes a while to affect the water. I love learning about this. Do you know if it would work similarly with linen, muslin or even cotton? Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing so much information!
Thanks for all your videos. I have just been doing the jacquard green label microwave method, but wanted to try the marbling. I will try it this summer. Also, I read on another blog someone who used a blender to mix up the carageenan with a small amount of water, then added it to the rest of the water and it mixed easier. Just a thought.
BRILLIANT IDEA! I had thought that adding 1 teaspoon at a time, and stirring in between was ONE POSSIBLE WAY OF MAKING IT MIX BETTER/QUICKER... BUUUT, I Really Love The Blender Idea! Just have to watch~ Something About Bubbles In The Water~ But by adding a Large Amount of Still Water, the Bubbles Shouldn't Be Too Bad, Or Too Many!
I'm Excited To DO THIS! WHERE'S PART 2?!
Non ho capito che colori usa geazie
Thank you for you precise instructions. I’ve been waiting for someone like you to give detailed instructions but could find them nowhere on UA-cam.
You're welcome!
It should be 2 tbsp carageenan for 1 gallon of water. Let it sit in fridge for at least 12 to 24 hrs to let bubbles dissolve. Mix in blender for one to 2 minutes.
Thank you for telling all the details
My pleasure 😊
This is so helpful!
Glad it is helpful!
Grazie x la tua bella spiegazione

Now, Where's Part II
Thank you! Part 2 was the video right after this if you are looking at my list of videos.
Hi Amanda-
Thanks for sharing all this. wondering if you have a source where I can purchase the silk in bulk??
Thanks for watching! I don't know where you can buy it in bulk, I bought some from Dharma trading Co. online, maybe they'd have larger quantities.
hello. thanks for sharing this with us. can you pls tell me what can I use to thicken water instead of carrageenan? I just couldn't find it anywhere. seems like we don't have it in my country:(((((
I have only used carrageenan so I am not sure what else would work the same to thicken the water.
Uso anche la colla di parati..
Cioè x incollare la carta da parete
Can you maybe add powder 1st then smaller amount of water to form paste then whisk in remaining water. Like making gravy.
@IyaEarthseeds FABULOUS~ THANKS SO MUCH!
Deve ficar lindo, mas adoraria que tivesse legenda. Obrigada 😃 Brasil - São Paulo capital 💓

Any type of dyes for fabric will work.
Ok in fabric mrbling which colrs are using
I am just using silk dyes.
Which type of colrs are use in paprr marbeling
I don't know, I haven't done paper marbling, just the fabric.
Is tie dye ink used for water marbling on fabrics?
I don't know how well tie dye ink would work. I used inks specifically for cotton cloth.
@@amandasdesignsofficial are you using acrylic paint too? Im just wondering what lind of ink you are using...looks great
Is this can be used for skin?
The dyes can be used for fabric that you can wear.
Do any of these products give a bad odor
No these in particular do not have a bad smell.
I need something that is about 50 inches.. what you are doing is so small. Thanks though for the info! Now I have to figure out how to find something big enough
Good luck!
