  • Ahoy shipmates, fellow travellers and adventurers!
    Here's a little update about some of the changes we have made to our boat, Theros, our GibSea 42 foot yacht, which is currently sitting patiently on the hard at the Dartmouth Yacht Club in Nova Scotia, waiting for us to return.
    In this video I used the following pieces of music from the UA-cam Audio Library and I am sincerely grateful to the following artists for allowing me to use their creations:
    1. Sailor's Lament by Audionautix,
    2. Blow The Man Down by the Midshipmen Glee Club
    We hope you enjoy this video. Feel free to leave any comments or queries below the video or on the community page.
    More boat updates coming soon!
    Thanks for watching.
    Lots of love and a glass of rum aye!
    Captain Brett and First Mate Sarah xx

      Ordinary people can't afford a boat let alone a trip round the world but so sad that their dream has ended this way. I wish people wouldn't do stuff like this any more on their own.

    I used to work on a fleet of GibSea 42 yachts in the Aegean. They are comfortable boats designed for coastal sailing but utterly unsuited for conditions in the Atlantic and ocean crossings.
    It seems very sad they made it into the liferaft but didn't take the EPIRB (emergency position-indicating radio beacon) They could have been rescued.

    Newfoundlander here: How can a fiberglass sailboat made out of resin/weave - can't be recycled, made from petroleum - be considered green? Boat is a coastal cruiser and not suitable for an Atlantic crossing, Nice people but they aren't marine architects (hard dodger, batteries/ballast changes to righting angles, etc.) and I get the sense they underestimated the Atlantic,

    • @anniej1616
      @anniej1616 Місяць тому +10

      Yes, my first thought is how have these modifications and weight changes affected the aerodynamics; could these amendments have resulted in the boat turning over in high winds, with weight instability? I was cringing watching these modifications and that was before finding out what happened. In addition, they added solar panels and surely a mass of weight and wind obstacles.

      A technical analysis about what he thought about the boat modification. Moreover this is a you tube channel not purely a condolense site although being respectful is very welcome and kind.
      Commenting on technical aspects is no way insulting. It is merely a technical observation which is entirely appropriate.
      The inferance that the center of mass of the boat may have been raised to such an extent that wind would perhaps have more of a roll effect is entirely within possibility to at least make a possible speculative analysis.

    He doubled his risk by attempting an Atlantic crossing AND doing a DIY solar conversion on the boat prior to setting sail. Would have been better to complete an Atlantic crossing first without the mods then applying what he learned from the crossing to mod the boat or not modding it at all. Doesn't look like he consulted a marine engineer or solar engineer during his build.

      Sadly he reminds of that owner and captain of the Titan submersible; that boasted about using game controllers to steer the submersible. Although advised that the materials he used in building the Titan, would likely not sustain the pressures of such ocean depths, he still went ahead to explore viewing the sunken Titanic wreckage. Tragically it imploded. I agree with.. it doesn't seem he used experience, training or advise, but rather appeared very confident with his diy plans. I'm left to wonder if the modifications that he made to the sailboat; were a contributing factor that....ultimately led to the tradegy... RIP

      @@ArtemKlochko Indeed, weight of a leaf battery is approx 300kg (660 LBS?) maybe a bit heavier than an average diesel engine, not much difference tho.
      6 solar panels is some 130kg. The electric motor probably was not heavy too.. The 4 to 6 people this boat could handle, make those changes not likely responsible for this tragic event!
      Update: I forgot to mention, that with removing the diesel engine, it's very likely that they removed the fuel tank as well, which also represents quite some weight that was grabbed out !
      So, I don't think that it was the overall weight that brought this vessel down..

      @rcana5803 Місяць тому

      In order for it to float, the average density of the boat's total volume, including passengers, cargo and empty space, must be less than the density of water. Adding batteries and solar panels increased the mass and weight for sure. no one knows if thermal runaway happened in batteries. As mentioned, they could have use LIfePo4, that would have been prohibitively expensive. Sad part they just did not have beaconing device with them in the raft.

      @@rcana5803 First, ua-cam.com/video/DLqN62VGPUE/v-deo.htmlsi=ZWGYHCapEO6fExPB&t=60 with the time mark. There are Theros owner say they installed a leaf battery. Next, boat buoyancy reserve is very high, usually it can take x0.3 - 0.5 of dry weight and stay afloat. Nissan leaf battery, even all parts is 303 kg (668 pounds). 6 solar panels that Theros have weight even less, rougly 100 kg (220 pounds). Theros boat is GibSea 42 as you can see at video description by the link. This boat displacement is 10,325 kg (22,763.00 pounds). They removed Volvo diesel engine and it's fuel tank (66 gals / 250 L). As you can see weight cannot be an issue looking at numbers. But fire - can be, because lithium fire can quickly destroy a boat, as we know battery was located under companion door, so access to cabin in case of fire can be only via a bow deck hatch.

      Yeah it wouldn't surprise me if they had a catastrophic lithium-ion battery fire onboard due to exchanging their diesel engine for a Nissan Leaf EV motor.

    It was shocking to hear it might be their fetish for electric power that caused the accident.

    I see this in another country and I have never sailed a sailboat. A ship that is being repaired like this has little chance of surviving on the ocean. You can't save on repairing a boat, plane, etc. When I see such recklessness, I think they were getting ready for their last journey, but that's not true. 😌
