  • as a horror fan you know i had to talk about junji ito at some point. this manga is called "the town without streets" from his collection the horror world of junji ito, and stars Saiko, a girl with a lot of problems. i also talk about The Invisible Man (2020) and Gaslight (1944) to establish a baseline for my analysis. let me know what you think!

ive gone through family gaslighting. specifically my family gaslighted me about my autism diagnosis. they denied i was autistic and i'd ask them questions about places i remember and they'd come up with some weird explanation or they'd say maybe i was remembering it wrong. but i knew it was real. it had to be. come to find out they tell me my ideas were right and i was actually having memories of the place i was diagnosed. this is at the age of 18. i was diagnosed when i was 3. they hid the diagnosis for me because they wanted to grow up normal.
now i no longer trust my family.

@@cherrybepsi It reminds me of those girl group songs where they sing about being in love with shitty men but warn other girls, "Keep away from him, your life will be easier if you do stay away"

I've never been into manga but I really enjoyed your narration of the story! Your soft voice + the psychological horror themes really worked for some reason haha

love this video i would pay you money and. I think it's really interesting how the town without streets is so much more apt now in the days of social media and basically being seen by every corporation, when it was published in 1997 at the latest. Just interesting! I could say more but i dont wanna clog up your comments section lol anyways love the videos

yesss i was also thinking about social media! i couldn't figure out a way to include it in the video without also making it like 45 min long but our minds 💆🏽‍♀️ also no worries i love reading long comments!!

Great video! For some reason, I'm not subscribed to you. I have no idea how this oversight occurred. Anyway, I'd like to give a short reading/watching list of horror stories with gaslighting themes:
The Summer People by Shirley Jackson
Psycho by Robert Bloch (Gaslighting by the dead!)
The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson (In which a house and a parapsychologist team up to do some gaslighting.)
Beloved, Toni Morrison (In which every character is subjected to gaslighting, and so is the reader.)
Rosemary's Baby, Ira Levin (In which the main character experiences gaslighting from the creepy couple next door, her creepy doctor, and her douchebag husband.)
    The Trial, Albert Camus

I really enjoyed this video. I HATE that Margaret Atwood quote though. As a lesbian, I never identified with it. I actively reject the idea that any part of my life is performed with even the idea of men in mind. And obviously a patriarchal society can shape the individual's perception of themselves, but I feel so much joy in my butch, very-not-for-men gender expression that I genuinely believe it negates some if not all of that. I guess it just irritates me because although I understand that many if not most women feel the way Atwood describes, *i* don't and I strongly dislike anyone trying to tell me im something I'm not. Her hooks are great though lol.
