@@Distress. Except that if you have a genuine copy of Windows 10 then you already paid for it (potentially a very high price if you didn't get your key from a grey market key reseller). This is Microsoft taking an essential part of an operating system (security updates) and putting it behind a subscription after the fact. I would find this acceptable if this was limited to feature updates which most people don't need. Instead if your PC doesn't meet the Windows 11 requirements you have a terrible choice of doing nothing and having an insecure system, buying a new PC or signing up for this subscription.

Because some people like to tolerate bullshit. On a lighter note? People are moving away from Microsoft whether to mobile solutions, which they surrendered to Android and iOS years ago, or to Mac OS or Linux in some respects.
It’s what disincentivizes paying them in my opinion. Why should anyone actually indulge Microsoft with genuine licenses if they’re going to honestly triple dip through targeted ads and this nonsense?
I don’t honestly take Linux or Android as serious alternatives not because I’m an Apple fanboy (I’ve used Android and IOS, and all the major OSes), but because Linux on a good day through more mainstream builds like Mint or Ubuntu is a convoluted mess and Android OEMs shoot themselves in the foot by crippling or removing the distinguishable differences from iOS (like hardware features) but with inferior update and warranty support and bloat.

Just a reminder for those thinking of switching to Linux and other open project. Consider donating to the devs of the software you do use. It helps them keep going and bring broader support and features. Even just taking a faction of what you might give MS will go a long way (and be a lower expense over all).

I strongly recommend it. I moved almost entirely to Linux a few years ago and it's a great feeling to be free from Microsoft's OS support shenanigans. My recommendation is to start with a dual boot where you have both Windows and Linux installed at the same time (you can do it with a single drive although using separate drives for each OS will make it much easier) and slowly move to Linux. The toughest part is by far going to be getting Windows-only software to run via Wine but it's a lot easier to do these days than it used to be just a few years ago. Gaming on Linux especially has improved drastically largely thanks to Valve's ongoing efforts with their Proton compatibility layer.
And finally don't be afraid to ask questions. Chances someone has already run into the same issue that you have and thus the solution may already exist.

Might be a wise decision. The first little while may be rough as it would be something different than you're used to, but once you get accustomed to it it may stick. Linux Mint, KUbuntu, Zorin are good choices as they're user friendly and have a Windows like appearance.
Windows itself also has many problems, and people just get used to fixing them without really thinking about it as they've used it for a very long time. Use one OS for twenty plus years and a simple problem is not a big deal, use an unfamiliar OS for less than a month and it's a big deal. A lot people cannot see that.
Windows 10's EOL is going to be nightmare considering two-hundred-and-forty million devices can't run Windows 11 without workarounds. Cheap used equipment for homelabbers I guess.

You know why they made extended support available for everyone with Win 10? Because Win 10 and Win 11 are basically the same thing under the hood anyway. So you as the consumer are paying Microsoft additional money, so they can... keep doing exactly what they were going to do anyway, but change the update package versions from "11" to "10".

It allows for myopic and lack-lustre software design/development. (Sorry Windows 11)

There is a lot of wrong with what you said on the surface level. SteamDeck/It's OS are not the only way to play your Steam Library on Linux. All Linux Distros can use Proton (Compability Layer) on your Steam, so all of the compatible games with it (more than 92% as far as I remember) will run on Linux. And mostly non-Steam games can still run with the help of Lutris and Bottles. "There are older games I want to play", those are the easiest games capable to run on linux through wine so I don't know what you are talking about, you would have to be more specific. Overall gaming on Linux has become far better than the past 2 years, most games will work with some necessary tinkering from time to time. So your comment is either wrong or lacking any depth.

You can play Windows-only games on Linux. In case of many Windows-only games Valve's Proton compatibility layer allows you to play them by just clicking the Play button in Steam.
SteamOS isn't a separate operating system. It's just a Linux distribution and you don't need it to use the Proton compatibility layer as it is included with the Linux version of the Steam client.

I switched to Linux. All of my machines too. Running Fedora on my PC. My home media server which was on Win 10 to Debian. Mostly because I can't use my intel RST raid array, had to move a ton of data around and recreate the software array in linux. Took a few days of just transfering files lmao but its all said and done. Luckily I already had a decent amount of linux experience before making the switch.
I also have a Windows 10 VM with a single GPU passthrough setup with bash scripts in those cases where I want to run a game or application that doesn't work with proton or wine. I'm able to give it 12 threads and 16gb of ram and still have 12 threads and 16gb of ram for the host. I can't see the host GUI while windows is running but I can SSH into it. Otherwise it works flawlessly including windows GPU drivers.

Easiest example for me is Remoting into my machines, windows has RDP, Linux has XRDP and its varients.
RDP is with the machine and just works, even doing some changes to it wouldnt make issues.
XRDP on the other hand is a hassle to setup, even when following the exact steps on a updated guide can result to the system not working or partially working.

Because convenience is exactly what's killing markets and allowing more and more scummy practices. It technically "increases" them temporarily in a way only because people give in too easily to them. But history always repeats itself, and nothing will stay like this forever. Even Windows or M$ in that matter. It's not the end-of-all. And that worse for people will be, if they won't have a backup plan. Which I can imagine in this case will be a lot.
But that's, yet again, just up to us, and how we'll handle ourselves. Personally, glad I learned Linux prior, and do know I'm not any kind of tech expert. I just know to backpedal when I see things going wrong. Which they are here, and they won't be getting better, given how corporations only see profit instead of user feedback.
And given how current market shifts towards subscription-based crap, tech dystopia and "You'll own nothing, but you'll be happy" tactic, thanks, I'll gladly sacrifice the convenience to learn something that at the end of the day after putting effort into it, will give me true freedom and control of things on how I want them, not how some random billion corporation will dictate me to do so. I think the wording for the microsoft OS updates (starting from xp to vista) was misleading. It was not that a newer OS needed stronger hardware, it was that the tasks that the users performed ran slower on a new os that on the previous os version on the identical hardware ran perfectly fine.
An operating system has no value in its own, its value is to run applications. And the set of applications that someone uses every day does not change because of an os update. And this was, where vista failed. The daily tasks, may it be internet and mail, may it be writing letters, or, in my case making music, which ran perfectly well on xp, suddenly became incredibly slow. Even a simple copy of a file took three times more time.
And that invaluated the new features.
If you can‘t provide the basics (doing the same as before as fast or maybe even faster as before) there is no value in additional features. And this approach, the basics becoming more and more unresponsive while lots of bling bling was added on top, became evident since vista.
Moving from xp to win 7 gave me a decrease in performance in music related tasks of about 40% , from a high performance audio workstation to a mediocre performance. Then i had to replace some hardware, und update some software, but could keep the performance stable, and now going from win7 to win10 i have lost another 10-15%, again, on the same hardware and software.
And now, microsoft tries to convince me, to invest into hardware and update to win12, to do the same as before, but with another 10 % performance loss ?

Windows 11 is an Windows 10 Mod from Microsoft that sucks. i have to develop programs and my buisnes recuires Windows for that. they still have computers running Windows Technical Preview but the majority are running Windows 10. i aslo love Windows 10's ui and i dont wanna switch to a rubishOS.

You already are using a rubbish OS for the very fact you are paying a subscription to get support now on top of the license you already paid. Keep it up paypiggy. lol

@@lindenreaper8683 You know what I find the most funny about the ESU announcement? How they didn't even reveal the pricing yet. But what are my bets it's gonna be a yearly subscription, just as was with W7. How dumb just one is to fall to that.
Oh, and just also found that Windows 365 users will have it at no additional cost. That just doesn't point at all how subscription-based model is not their future at all, nooo xD gosh, hasn't it been such a better time than now to make the full switch.

Why couldn't they do this for Windows 7

Can they just not let us stick with Windows 10 the way that it is forever? Reject modernity, embrace tradition.
My mom's old work computer was still able to run Windows XP unscathed until they forced an update on it, that eventually did nog matter because my mom left her job anyway.

That's what Linux does. Time to adapt.

@@MichaelDustter I've used Windows all my life, why would I switch?

    • @MichaelDustter
      @MichaelDustter 26 днів тому

@@IABITVpresents Because of increasingly aggressive practices that they've been doing with Windows lately. Especially considering 11's requirements. As someone who has to live on a budget, did refurbish an older rig recently to make it perfectly serviceable, only to get being tried to tell by MS to throw it away just to adapt to their new system, while I could instead adapt to something that will mainly assure continuous support to my hardware? It's obvious what I'll pick. Not jumping to every dirty trick out there. And so should anyone if they want to retain their sanity.

I don't want to adapt to something I've never used just because it's for us by people who love us. I just want Microsoft to do better...

@@IABITVpresents Then you're naive. Keep hoping for something that's not gonna happen. The practices are getting more intrusive with each build release, and it's not gonna just stop there like that. Also gave numerous chances. But it's just not possible. Blocking essential customization apps that make W11 even remotely usable is the last straw for me. Linux is the future for those who want to retail control of their own hardware and software.

You know what they say - Linux is free only for the people who don’t value their time - but Windows is increasingly not saving me time or money, so the switch is becoming more and more financially appealing every year.
