Printing a street map of the City of Oakdale for National Read A Road Map Day (April 5)

April 5th is National Read A Road Map Day! This day promotes road map literacy and, even though we have apps on our phones, being able to read a map for navigation is still a useful skill.
For today, Howard letterpress printed a large map, made in 1969, of the City of Oakdale. We are not sure why we have this photo engraving but it details what the city looked like at the time. Oakdale is just 15 miles outside of Modesto and 75 miles southeast of Sacramento, California. This was printed with reflex blue rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.

I was just here yesterday and got to meet Howard. He had about 1 million kids coming through for field trips plus a few of us fans gawking. He was so patient and so kind. Truly a gem! Also if you get a chance to go to the museum DO IT! It's a great little museum. Just the right amount of exhibits to enjoy w/o feeling overwhelmed. I also went on the underground tour. Such a wonderful experience! The guide was AMAZING!

I'm very grateful to my father.Teaching me how to read a roadmap a long time ago. It has been very helpful many many times over the years. Especially when GPS and google maps is inaccurate. Even today it's still important to have a basic knowledge of map reading

In my 20's, I drove a tractor trailer for 7 years. And yes, this was well before modern day GPS. I would travel from coast to coast and many a time I passed through your fine city. Thank you.

It DOESN'T TAKE A Rocket Scientist To Read And Figure Out A Roadmap. You'd Have To Be Pretty Damn STUPID NOT To Be Able To Read One. But Some WOMEN Still Have To Keep Turning The Map, Every Time They Turn A Corner At An Intersection. Its A Wonder They Can Find Their Way Out Of The House.😂😂😂😂😂

Wow - that’s so clear! What a nice print. When I was a kid we traveled quite often. As part of our trips, Dad would get 4 road maps - one for him, and one for each of us kids. A month or so before we were going to takeoff we would all sit down at the dining room table with our maps and Dad would put a big X where we lived and a big X where we were going, and then he’d ask us how we thought we should go to get there on time. It was a great way to learn how to read a map. Best part - we had no idea that he was teaching us anything, we just thought we were so cool having our own road map!!
