My husband fixed the leak under our sink after watching your helpful video. Of course it would start leaking on a Sunday, the day before my sister is going to visit, so we were going to call a plumber out tomorrow, but now, thanks to you, we don’t have to. You are an absolute star for making this. Thank you xx

Ha ha... it kills me that a plumber wanted to charge me $400.00 US dollars plus to hook my sink back up after I had other work done...I DON'T THINK SO !!! DISGUSTING ! I'm a single woman out of work caring for my elderly uncle w/ Alzheimer's full time, that being after dealing with my mother that passed away & now I am trying to pay her past bills. I figured out how to do most of this myself before watching this video but this definitely confirmed to me what I needed to know. THANK YOU !!!

Trades workers are typically blood sucking money hungry dishonest thieves. They will take a simple project like this and make it sound like there doing brain surgery by the time there done explaining it to you. This is a five minute quick fix.

Thanks for the tip for using PTFE tape to fix the leak. I moved into a new house recently and the waste pipe in the kitchen had a very slow leak. I really couldn't be bothered with the faff of contacting my landlord or a plumber for such a minor issue, plus I had some PTFE tape anyway in my tool box. Took me all of 10 minutes to fix it. Job well done! :)

Thank you! It started leaking under the sink yesteday. I was just back from a day of cycling so I watched this but being tired, I stuck a plastic box underneath to catch any water in case (which I did at times) I forgot not to use the kitchen sink. Woke up fresh this morning and using a bit of duck tape to tighten the connection (also removed the U bend, cleaned it out etc) and problem is fixed, The U bend I guess is not far off 20 years old so I'll "splash out" and get a new one and if / when it leaks next time, I'll just change it.

We had a new kitchen fitted recently and every few months or so I have to tighten the nuts which come a bit loose as the u bend starts to leak. I reckon its the washing machine which is next to the sink causing vibration enough to start loosening them. Does that seem logical/have you come across that before?

    • @dereton33

  • @kellerrobert80

I could not tell, but it seemed one end of your trap was a flanged connection? The difference is subtle but important. Flanges are used in two places under sinks: on the top of the vertical tailpiece coming from the strainer and into a Tee connection. All other connections involve a taper, whether from a washer or molded into the pipe. If you see a flange instead taper on, say, a tailpiece going into the wall, you've got the wrong one and it will NEVER work. In the USA, entire trap assemblies are typically under US$20 and assure perfect fit. Get PVC if you can.

How would you know what washer is causing the leak and what one to replace?

Use kitchen towel or toilet paper, wipe around starting from the top nut and work your way down until it goes wet.

the pipe was ok but went leaking after I called a plumber to fix a leak under the bath round the drain. I think he removed my wash basin pipe washer so I needed to call him again; but no I must learn to do it myself!

With all the covid going on up here you have to put the dogs away (given), no one under 18 or over 70 (that leaves me) and I have to wear a mask in my own home. It was going to be at least a week and I've got dishes to do! It's fixed and ACE Hardware guys helped me installing! Wow I'm happy I looked on You Tube before making an appt.
