  • Here is a ride onboard one of TTC's remaining eighteen Flyer D901 buses, 6133 makes the trek on 131E from Lawrence Ave. East to Kennedy Station. This bus is equipped with a Detroit Diesel 6V71N engine with an Allison V730D transmission.
[Edit] There are now zero Flyer D901 buses in service

Wow, that engine sound takes me back! Reminds me of when we had them in Chicago/CTA. I drove these buses for a couple of years.

This is probably the best 6V71N-V730 recordings I have heard. Excellent sound quality, variation in stop/start/idle up to the final shift. Great contribution!

i remember these old buses since where i live community transit in snohomish county washington had tons of these and the last one they had they retired in 1998 and what they replaced them all with were the 1995,1997,1998,1999 new flyer d40lf but now as of last year they have retired all the 1995 d40lf and even a few 1997 and 1998 models are gone. what they have left are a few 1999 d40lf and then they have the newer 2008 d40lf redesigned and they have the 2011 xcelsior series both types of engine

This does indeed sound like an engine from the GM buses

Love how slow the transmission would shift into overdrive. Very smooth!

Now that bus right there sounds and looks good from the inside. Hopefully the TTC will let them run for a little while longer, but if they retire these buses, they will go out with more than 20 years of grace. And that is honorable.

I think the TTC should just rebuild them as Hybrid electric buses like the Orion VII. I hate when buses get scrapped, especially my favourite ones.

The engine almost sounds like that of the GM fishbowls.

    Oh one more thing:
Since Suffolk Transit had these D901s as their first ever bus under the then-new Suffolk Transit company in 1981-2, did any of those buses get sent to Toronto, or did they get the scrap treatment?

All Flyers were retired since they're old. =) Watch as the GM's die slowly :D
Also, the Flyers consume 15% more fuel than the Fishies so they are a better choice for retirement over the bowls at the moment.

No, the 20xx-21xx Fishbowls started retiring in 2000. 2109 was retired first.

I hope they're still around by August...since I'm hoping to be up there by then...

Why did all the Flyer buses retire? What's wrong with them?

Flyer buses are build much less on long term age than New Look.
Well, you better catch one right now cause they can be gone at anytime.
