Think Carrick was ahead of his time tbh. I was a massive fan of his, made up when we signed him. Unfortunately fans wanted another Keane and never got that. But Carrick could genuinely play now and would be top 5 holding midfielders in the world. He could do everything the likes of Rodri etc are doing.
Carrick more or less walk so that players like Declan rice can run,the man in the English game was way ahead of his time in terms of his style of play. During United’s title winning runs in the late 2000s,Carrick’s simplistic approach more or less laid the foundations so that much skilled players like Rooney,Ronaldo,Tevez,Berbatov and Nani can thrive. Not many say this but I will say Carrick more or less made Scholes to reinvent his game in his early 30s.
Great CM combo. Carrick is an example of a good holding CDM. Brilliant ball circulator, always make himself available to receive ball from defence to play out, never panicked when in possession and makes good passing decision. When defending he seldom need to tackle, just reads game well and just position well so opponents couldn’t find space or angle to bring ball in front of defenders. Just seldom see him shoot from outside box, though he’s a great shooter in West Ham days. Scholes is an example of a great CAM and False 9. Brilliant goal assist. His balls always find a teammate in good position with the right precision and speed (be it long or even squeezed from a cramped position). Always arriving in the right moment to score goals in front or behind opponents defence (like a striker). Missing from his game is carrying ball with speed and dribbling past players (like Zidane). The great Barca Tiki Taka team has similar players in Busquets (for Carrick) and Xavi + Iniesta (for Scholes)
Scholes was the greatest midfielder of his generation, not my words but the world of Xavi and Iniesta. If he was Italian, Spanish etc he would have received the plaudits he deserved as they would have rightly built the national team around him. As for Carrick, criminally underrated, his ability to read the game and his transition was 1st class.
@@padcontrol1 pretty much, but Scholes was no media darling (like Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard or Giggs) - but in my opinion, a much better all round midfielder.
Most idiotic comment ive stumbled across.i like scholes but to say greatest mid of his generation is beyond ridiculous.zidane iniesta were on a different level to him.
When Carrick joined, Utd went on to wining the premiership after a 4 year drought to win 5 premier league titles and 1 champions league from a total of 3 final appearance with him being the only central midfielder to start all 3...its a pity people use those 2 CL final losses/appearances against him as he had dominated an era in English football when Utd was most successful ever
Carrick was good alright, I'd rate him at Xabi level, Scholes was at beast level though, am sure the 2 UCL's would have turned out different if he was started.
Just imagine GK - James or Robinson DF - G. Neville Ferdinand Terry A. Cole MF - Beckham Carrick Gerrard Scholes AMF - Lampard or J. Cole ST - Rooney or Owen
@@Bulletno that wouldn’t happen. They would have played 433 with Beckham and Rooney outside. Owen up top. If they had a manager willing to play 433 as that formation wins all the top trophies usually.
Carrick was so underrated it's shown here, they barely spoke about him and Micah said he was like Barry....it's criminal, a half assed review before moving on to talk about scholes, Pep said Carrick's the only player who could have replaced Busquests at Barca..
The answer is a big fat YES. They were underrated. They should have been the first choice England midfield duo at the time they were dominating the Premier League and the Champions League. They were England's equivalent to Xavi and Busquets. Those two together would have won a trophy for England but we all know that the FA have their favourites. Carrick was incredibly underrated and Lampard was incredibly overrated. Lampard was basically a striker with limited ability on the ball playing as an attacking midfielder with proper tough midfielders such as Ballack, Essien and Makelele covering him and carrying him. It's very understandable why both Scholes and Carrick retired early from international football, the disrespect from the FA was too much considering how good and dominant both of them were.
Let's put it this way about Carrick. Since he retired, none of Utd midfielders were as great as him for Utd. The closest one is Pogba (not saying they have similar playing style, jusg saying purelg based on how each impacts Utd play) and that says it all. Pogba never really got control of Utd midfield whereas Carrick was the main engine post Keano era. In fact, Rooney playing in midfield at times was better than Pogba. Just love watching Carrick play. And what a find job he is doing at Boro right now too.
I never bought the sound bite of Scholes being a poor tackler. I always thought he was 'letting the opposition know he was there' and just let the story run of him being poor tackler as it influenced the ref. It is far easier to forgive someone for coming in late and catching the leg than it is to forgive them for deliberately doing it.
Totally agree. The "Scholes can't tackle" narrative has become like a joke now, people repeat it without actually thinking, while when you look at older interviews (before the narrative of nowadays) players actually described him as a complete midfielder, tough tackler, nasty at times, but strong and aggressive. Now he's just "he couldn't tackle". Also Scholes himself said that he wasn't actually bad, and many times he did it on purpose (which is very normal thing to do, especially back in the days - especially for smaller lads -, and especially in the midfield, make the opponent know that you're there to fight)
When tricksters/dribblers, the likes of Nani and Ronaldo, say he's the king of one/two touch drills in training, it speaks volumes. When they both say he's the best midfielder they've ever played with, or against, you can't ignore that either. Tevez, who had every right to be bitter towards United and his former teammates, a man who only played alongside him for 2 seasons AND was part of the national set-up alongside Messi says he's the best passer he's ever seen, that speaks volumes. Xavi couldn't ping a ball 40m to a teammate's feet. Pirlo was a maestro but his success and legacy was all down to Serie A, and it's infamously slow paced style of play. Remember Veron, another maestro at Lazio, he didn't do too well in the premiership did he!!? Watch Schole's goal against Villa, the volley, you know the one. Watch how Ronaldo puts his head in his hands in disbelief when it goes in, Ronaldo in his prime, and he was dumbfounded. If I type out all the achievements and stories about this player my thumbs will fall off, so just be honest with yourself, are all these players talking rubbish just to stroke Scholes' ego, doubt it
Scholes wasn't underrated. Anyone who understands football intimately knows he was one of the all time greats. He would have got in any club team, including Barcelona, and any international team, including Brazil. He was awesome. Just look what Zidane, Henry, Xavi, Pep say about him... Carrick was a very good player but quite a way off the genius of Scholes.
Every partnership scholes ever did was great. Because he could make anyone look good. Him and the pre premiership player Brian Robson were the best midfielders ive ever seen.
These two could have played in that great Barca team Pep had and it wouldnt miss a beat. Cant say that about many other English players, they were unique for English players at the time.
Interesting the Scholes/Carrick combo getting a mention for once. All i ever read about Gerrard these days is dragging and carrying crap teams. Him and Lampard didn’t get to the euros in 2008 with a very solid team around them. Scholes and Carrick won the premier league and the champions league that season. Would’ve been interesting to see if Scholes didn’t retire early if they would’ve given that pairing a chance with England in that era
Gerard’s become a myth these days. He couldn’t dictate a game at all. This is why he failed when he tried to do it when he got older. The best midfielders like scholes, xavi, pirlo etc. obviously zidane and iniesta stand out above all because they could dictate and go past people like they didn’t exist.
Scholes has 11 premeriship league medals, 2 champions league winner medals, god knows the rest - league, FA, world super and community cups winning medals
Scholes was underrated when he was playing but for some reason became overrated when he retired. Suddenly he was on the same level as Zidane for some people. Strange world.

No they wasn't underrated an anyone who knows footy knows how good the were individually an as a collective them man u teams around 09 was brilliant an top 30 British of all time so not underrated the problem is British footy an footballers r massively overrated
People forget Scholes was easily scoring 10*+ & 20+ one time in the number 10 in his early days. Well they didn’t have 10s but advanced midfield we’ll say which is even more impressive btw
All united players from the past suffer from the English media and every other teams fans jealousy and woman !like feelings about them. Schools was the best .midfielder England has ever had and get two clowns are put I the same class as scholes
If anything, they were overrated because of the English bias - there were far FAR better foreign players in their positions at the time who couldn’t compete with the might of the English press.
Overrated because of English bias? Even to this day this duo hardly get a mention amongst the best United or even the Premier League midfield combos let alone Europe. Scholes get the majority of the plaudits whereas Carrick at his prime rarely gets one. Sure at the time in this league, individually the combos of Essien/Lampard/Ballack along with Maschernao,Gerrard and Alonso were better as individuals but overrated while they won the league 3 times in a row.
Great foreign midfielders at the time - Vierra, Xabi, Makelele, John Obi Mikel, Essien, Yaya Toure (later on). Ok, looking at these, I cant see any better than Scholes.
Personally think he was the Key to making a Scholes/ Gerrard midfield working for England
The likes of players like Keane is dead, carrick did a great job of replacing him

Theres a reason he was a one of the highest transfers at the time and played so many games for a top 5 club in the world. His skills where sublime.
He passes the ball like Riquelme.
This was meant to be about Scholes and Carrick and Micah turned it into the story of his failure to make it as both a striker and a midfielder 😂
Well he did 'burst onto the scene' 🤣🤣

Carrick was pure class. Read the game so well, exceptional range of passing, never out of position, such an intelligent player.

If Scholes was more media friendly, vocal publicly, and as you said Italian and Spanish he would be regarded as the best.
@@padcontrol1 pretty much, but Scholes was no media darling (like Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard or Giggs) - but in my opinion, a much better all round midfielder.
