I've compared a few things so far to my Kitchenaid 7qt mixer and I think it is a bit more efficient. Also, I upgraded the beater attachment to the stainless steel version. It's a bit expensive but it has a much solid feel compared to the aluminum version. As you've pointed out the greatest part of all of this will be the longevity and the availability of replacements parts in the future. Regards

Great review. I just disagree with what you said at the end. If you follow the capacity chart for the unit, you should be fine and not burn out the motor. You're not going to do any crazy volume with it. But it would be perfect for small batches.
I'm a Hobart repair tech. I once fixed one of these that was over 15 years old. it was in use daily at The test kitchen of the a huge factory. (Entenmann's) they use it to test all of their incoming shipments and create new recipes. The old ones had a fiber gear that eventually wore out.(it's like a sacrifice gear so if someone is abusing the machine the entire machine will have to be replaced) But the new ones have all metal gears, I haven't seen the set up yet but I think there is a slip clutch or a breakaway key to achieve the same goal.
PS. it is the hardest of all the Hobart mixer is to repair. Some text call it the little swear machine. Because of how frustrating it is. Maybe I'll do a video on it one day. If I ever rebuild the broken one I have.

Jared Jeanotte - luckily I chanced to meet a hobart tech repair like u
Could u PLEASE tell me how or in what ways Hobart mixer is better than a Kitchen Aid stand mixer.
I am planning to get a stand mixer for mainly dough kneading. You can suggest other brands also. Kindly reply.

According to the comments I've been reading, only Hobart and Ankarsrum mixers are able to knead firm doughs without sustaining damage. Using any other mixer is said to be a risky endeavor that may break. I don't know how bad decent consumer grade mixers really are when it comes to thick dough, but I do know that the high-end mixers are built to last decades, perhaps lifetimes of regular use, and owners report satisfaction. Buy once, cry once, if you can afford it. Me? I'll have to knead by hand (or no-knead) for the foreseeable future, especially for thick doughs that cheap mixers can't handle. My rolling pin is a $1.50 imported Chinese one-foot wooden dowel, the cheapest thing I could buy. I scraped a little mold off, baked the thing for an hour at 170°F, and treated it with food-safe oil. Someday I hope to have nice things. For now, to make life easier I try to find a good no-knead recipe for every dough I want to make. There isn't a one for most things. When I finally get my hands on a stand mixer, it will be a baking frenzy. I'm looking forward to bagels.

There is a health and safety requirement for commercial mixers to have a guard in Australia. I still haven't understood the reason for the off/on/start switch and have never seen it on any other appliance! I'm really happy you like the N50, like I said I didn't find the mixing so much better than any other mixer, it's just that it is so rock solid it will last longer than anything else.

It's a safety feature; the mixer will not start when the bowl is raised even if it is switched on. A second action is needed.

The on off switch has to do with the motor. It uses an AC motor not a universal motor like a kitchen aid mixer. The AC motors need special starting circuitry to turn on, but not to run. Some motors use a centripetal switch which turns off the starting circuitry when the motor is up to speed, but these can wear out over time. With this switch, you turn the motor on, then switch in the starting circuitry manually, by the time you let go of the starter switch the motor is moving fast enough to sustain itself.

At my cafeteria job we have a commercial stand mixer floor model that gets its attachment Hub use more often than its Bowl and beaters, mainly for shredding cheese.

Hi, I just bought a N50 and it's terrific. Mine didn't come with the guard and the on/off switch is not the same action as yours. I bought it new from a USA dealer and it was shipped from Hobart. What country are you from maybe there is a law where they have to add the safety feature? I've used it a few times so far and I'm very impressed.regards

You can, for sure, make bread dough on this machine. You aren't going to crank out LOAVES day in and day out, but pizza dough and bread dough... No Problem.
This thing has serious torque and muscle.

The Teddys are very rare in North America. I've never seen one except in videos and they look amazing. Is yours performing OK or have you had troubles? I've read two comments about the speed selector dial not working, and how expensive it was to get that fixed.

  • @LeBakerSam

No the machine won't start, you need to have the guard on this version. Older mixers, which is pretty much all I have seen before, don't have the guard. Not a huge issue I have found, one extra thing to clean at the end. A little annoying if you want to add things during a mix but it just sits on top of the bowl, not attached to anything, so it's very easy to remove and replace.

There is a reason for it, due to the gears this thing will just break your limbs if they get in them and will NOT stop.
The kitchenaid will stop when stuck due to a plastic gear that breaks on obstruction.

Have had My KitchenAid K5SS since 1992, before Whirlpool cheapened up the Hobart design. Being a chef I have used my mixer at work as well as home. Sadly I would NEVER buy a new one with their obnoxious squealing China motors and plastic gears. Same goes for ANY mixer except a Hobart. While the new Hobarts are not going to last 50 years like the old ones they are still the best on the market.

My 5 quart KitchenAid from 1989 is still going strong. I've read that Whirlpool was still using Hobart's specs. I remember when they changed in the 1990s and then all of the bad reviews started. Not sure if I would buy another KA when this one goes, though. Maybe the 7 quart Pro Line with the DC motor?

You will not burn that thing out mixing bread. There's a Hobart mixer at a biscuit place I used to work at that was 60 years old and they made a thousand biscuits a day on that thing and it fucking took it like nothing. I don't know if biscuit means something else in Australia but I'm in America, it's bread.

It really all depends on the year. They have gone through so many iterations of engineering on this thing that it kind of drives me nuts when people say things like "these are the best, I've had one for 40 years..". I have seen teardowns of recent ones and they look nothing like my 10 year old one that I have replaced gears on at least 3 times. I don't know if they are better or worse but the are nothing alike.

I'm lucky. My 1989 KitchenAid works very well. No problems, but I've heard all sorts of horror stories about the later ones. Even the newer Commercial mixer, which supposedly was similar to Hobart quality, got some pretty bad reviews on Amazon.

This isn't a kitchenaid, this will wipe the floor with one of those kitchen ornaments. The bowls will fit, the bowl catch and the power cord are the same, but that's about it. I've a 76 without all the safety gubbins on it, compared it to a KA pro 5 quart, I'll stick with mine.
