The still-in-progress Blue Shift remake - Guard Duty (not to be confused with the original GD or BM:BS), will use a maglite as both a melee weapon and a flashlight
@@peppermillers8361I honestly just forgot about it. It kind of disappeared from my radar after the Black Mesa Blue Shift release. I've added a pinned comment last night for completes sake.
Personally if it were up to me I'd have made Barney's melee weapon a baton as that's more in keeping with the theme of security. As for the flashlight personally I think it could have worked for horror but it would have made blueshift a very different game if the whole title was designed around it. As it stands blueshift is basically just a smaller version of the Half Life 1 campaign. Having it with darker areas could have been interesting and more tense. Perhaps they could have even had some kind of mechanical use outside of just hitting enemy's as well. Like using the flash to blind and stun them for a second.
It should be noted that the 'elephant in the room' is that the flashlight in Doom 3 was extremely polarizing, and a ton of people really hated it - instead, future games would copy the what revised BFG Edition (and also HL2) did where flashlight isn't an exclusive weapon, but instead slowly runs out of power and has to recharge. Maybe instead, pistol could be "pistol and flashlight" - pistol in right hand, flashlight in left weapon, where pressing altfire turns the flashlight on and off? And this could *still* create some tension because pistol is a weak weapon, and it makes sense you can't hold flashlight together with a two-handed shotgun or powerful magnum. So instead of being completely defenseless, your choice would be to use a weaker pistol with light, or a stronger weapon in darkness.
That would’ve been really cool if Blue-Shift did Doom 3 before Doom 3. You’d want the flashlight to also be a melee weapon. Something I wish Blue-Shift would’ve had is an experimental energy weapon you’d find at that abandoned portion of Black Mesa. Since you don’t have an HEV suit making it get charge from suit chargers/batteries would’ve been a great way to make those things useful. It would be like the plasma/energy weapons in Halo where you never reload them, but they’ll frequently overheat and just eats through the battery. It could either be a sniper that fires a continuous beam (basically a good version of the Focus Rifle from Reach), or a Tesla-coil that chains multiple enemies together with lightning and stunlocks them. Either of those would’ve been great additions to the sandbox.
i think barney being able to have the both the flashlight and pistol at the same time would also make the pistol have a special utility. the idea would make it more unique tho. would Bring blueshiift more of it's own idea and paint barney less the main protagonist or a Trained marine and really place him on the spot of being just one more of the security guards in black mesa.
Thanks for having me as the cameo! I still wish Blue Shift had more going for it because it is an awesome Expansion. The flashlight would have been pretty cool in the early levels of the game and maybe Xen too. Would have been nice Gearbox... would have been nice...
"If done right" is the key phrase here. I suspect that in testing, the team realized that the flashlight melee weapon didn't work out the way that they were hoping for. I always find it kind of funny how Blue Shift doesn't add any new NPCs or weapons over the base game, yet I've always preferred it heavily over Opposing Force (mostly because I see the former as "more half-life" while the latter feels more like "military-glorifying generic shooter with the Half-Life branding on it.") Excellent video as always!
Although some base game weapons don't appear in Blue Shift, Gearbox still took the time to provide Barney-based viewmodels with his hands in place of Gordon's. Third person playermodel is still Gordon though.
Must have never seen a Maglite irl. There was a reason law enforcement made them standard issue at one point as a baton and flashlight in one package. All metal and will keep chugging along after being used as said baton.
You forgot one thing. Adrian actually has 2 iconic weapons, wrench AND a knife. So, I think that it would be better if Adrian actually had hunting knife as his iconic weapon and Barney had a wrench as his. Flashlight would be iconic however given that we see some Barneys helping fix stuff I think it would also fit.
It's healthy and cool. You're writing this comment on a game where there are intelligent humanoid aliens, even more unlike humans, and for some reason it doesn't bother you.
I absolutely love how this dev build contains a multiplayer scientist model that's probably some inside joke for a game that doesn't even have multiplayer support
I'm still waiting for someone to make a mod that replaces the crowbar with the flashlight and makes it so you can only use the flashlight when it's equipped.
I could honestly see the flashlight using that charged attack that Adrian's Wrench used as an Alt Fire alongside the Crowbar. Which... Is just the Wrench & Knife from Opposing Force... Hm...
It'd have been really awesome if it stayed in the game. Yeah, it becomes superfluous pretty quickly (what areas in the game even are pitch-black?) or otherwise tedious (seen in Doom 3), but it'd really emphasize how much of an average guy Barney is. When you think about it, even a simple crowbar is a pretty cool weapon. It's hard, heavy and does a lot of damage. A metal flashlight? Sure, it packs a punch, but it's also very short-ranged. And if that's your ONLY way of lighting the way forward, then you really feel utterly helpless. Barney is really doing the best he can, and he doesn't get the convenience of being surrounded by helpful scientists and security guards all the time.
Barney should definitely have his own special melee weapon. We agree on that. But many people might not like the flashlight thing. Blue Shift is much shorter than the original game and is not even a boss fight, so it is not liked by many. The flashlight could have been a nice option, but it should have been done in the style of Alyx, and Barney should have held it in his other hand. Because fighting against enemies that suddenly appear in a dark corridor with only the light of the gun would increase the scary aspect of the game, and it would also annoy many people.
If you go to the past, nobody liked the idea of needing a separate gear to just see what's ahead of you. If I remembered right two years ago in the year 2023, someone released a mod for doom 3, that you have a flashlight at all times and a lot of people agree it improved the game a lot.
2023? How about 2004, when Doom 3 released with the Duct Tape mod? One of the first mods that came out for Doom 3 to give you a flashlight on all weapons (and later a version that specifically gave you one on the SMG and Shotgun, which makes both more useful)
It would have been nice for Barney to have his own melee weapon, but I think it's generally a good idea to have cut it. Half-Life is known as a fast paced shooter, so a weapon slot for a flashlight wouldn't have been really fitting for a game in its franchise. Doom 3 BFG Edition replaced the flashlight with a standard FPS light for the same reason.
I wish they had put slightly more effort into blue shift with the weapon selection. The game is still quite good, but it can get slightly boring in some parts. Also, nice animation at 1:53 !
It should be mentioned that something like this is planned for the mod Guard Duty. Preview: ua-cam.com/video/8q1Z3uTkFvo/v-deo.html

Barney using crowbar for gordon so he can give him on half life 2
Barney having his iconic Maglite next to the crowbar would be awesome.
Also, LOVE the new Intro Graphic!
Thank you very much!

A baton? For who, the scientists? Or the scary fuck-off xen creatures? Don't be ridiculous, Barney needs his bare fists to kill.
barney has a severe lack of beer (WHICH HE OWES YOU.)

For sure, could maybe even be a toggle to put down the flashlight for full accuracy with the pistol or having light but a less accurate firing stance.
the Guard Duty remake is doing exactly that.
I like Barney having his own unique melee weapon.

A flashlight is too fragile to be used as a weapon. Barney's iconic weapon could be a stun gun or an stun baton, I think it fits his job.
I don't think durability should be a issue in a game that has no durability features
Must have never seen a Maglite irl. There was a reason law enforcement made them standard issue at one point as a baton and flashlight in one package. All metal and will keep chugging along after being used as said baton.
Yay, you managed to save the fox at the end of the video. Now, you two, get into science 😈
This is the exact Problem with
DOOM 3
Hi. Take a look at blue shift enlightened. I added flashlight as separate weapon there.
Thank god they didn't do that honestly. I HATE the doom 3 flashlight, it's just annoying, not tense or scary.

amazing fox
Reminds me of how in Left 4 Dead (2) you can't really see your flashlight's light while reloading.
Surprised you didn't mention tripmine studios' handling of this mechanic in their WIP remake of blue shift
Love your GoldSrc model!

I'm pretty sure the dreamcast edition was supposed to have multiplayer, and it was advertised as a big thing before the port was canned

The Tripmine Studios WIP remake of Blue Shift is using the Maglite instead of the crowbar.
Barney deserver unique weapon, it should have been a police/guard baton.
I think it would've been cool but the fact that the Goldsrc Flashlight is kinda poopy probably would've made it less fun.
yea, i guess that's the main reason they cut it.
yay new esc upload :3
well, the flashlight was the reason why i stopped plying doom 3 back in the day 😅
Barney is my favorite protagonist
I'm still waiting for someone to make a mod that replaces the crowbar with the flashlight and makes it so you can only use the flashlight when it's equipped.
Greetings ESCalation! Yes, I know the Flashlight with a hand did cut in Blue Shift, but Somehow it is already in the game, but holding a gun.
