Assemblies of God vs Calvary Chapel vs Vineyard

- These three denominations all have a charismatic theology - that the miraculous spiritual gifts continue and are expressed in the church today. This video explores where they differ.
One Addendum on Eternal Security and Calvary Chapel.
Some Calvary Chapels, like Chuck Smith, say they believe in “Eternal Security” but define it as “As long as I abide in Christ, I’m eternally secure”, but still leave room that someone could apostatize. This is a different definition from most who claim to believe in eternal security, who would say that for a true believer, they will always be saved, no chance of being lost again. Additionally, some Calvary Chapels do teach a person cannot apostatize. So there are churches in Calvary Chapel with both positions. See examples below:
Chuck Smith | “We believe in the security of the believer, but we also believe in the “perseverance of the saints.” We don’t believe that just because you are a saint you will persevere but that you need to persevere because you’re a saint. Jesus said, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed” (John 8:31), and “If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned” (John 15:6). So, we seek a balance. Hard stands on these non-foundational issues only empty a church of members from Methodist, Nazarene, and other Arminian-influenced backgrounds.
The issue of eternal security is debatable at best. There are Scriptures on both sides… I tell people that, of course, I believe in eternal security. As long as I abide in Christ, I’m eternally secure. As long as I abide in Him, He’s going to keep me from falling and present me faultless before His glorious presence. Calvary Chapel Pasadena | “. The phrase “some will depart from the faith” creates a problem with some from the human perspective in their unbalanced understanding of what is called “eternal security” by the teaching of five point Calvinist. The departure from the faith is the outcome of the exercise of one's own free will to choose. Josh. 24:15
a. Every believer still has a free will to choose, reject or abandon
b. This is a valid and necessary Biblical doctrine.
The Scriptures are very clear that some who appear to depart were never of the faith in the first place. 1Jn. 2:18-19
a. This is always an absolute possibility when someone departs from the faith, but not the only one.

Calvary Chapel Anne Arundel | “Paul’s letter to Timothy says that in the latter days (not necessarily meaning last days, just days after Paul writes these things), that some will depart from the faith. Depart is the word (apostasy), and it means to leave the faith. That is what it says, so I just read it for what it says. Of Calvary Chapel since 2012 and never knew some calvary chapels don’t believe in eternal security!
It’s a very fine difference. I attended a John MacArthur’s for a couple of years , he is a dyed in the wool Calvinist and they will say the person was never saved in the first place. I went to CCCM for 25 + years. He didn’t really say that but almost the same idea. The problem I’ve seen is with parents that have adult children that have “left” the faith. They hold on for dear life to the idea that their child was a believer at one time, but in adulthood became an non believer, so they still must be saved underneath . The truth is painful for them. Most cavalry pastors teach what 1John lays out in that IF you are saved you will remain. Those that left were never of us.
The problem with the understanding most people have with the whole debate is that they believe that if I claim salvation then I am saved. In the end of John 2 is says that many BELIEVED IN HIS NAME (the anthem of sloppy egape) but Jesus did not trust himself to them because He KNEW WHAT WAS IN THEIR HEART. Of course many will ignore Paul’s teaching through out Romans that WE ALL ARE ONE UNDER ONE SALVATION AND GOSPLE and tell me that what Jesus said only applied to Jews before Pentecost or 70AD. But, if you ignore enough scripture anything becomes true.

Pastor Chuck Smith once said. That the Pentecostal’s thought he was too Baptist because of his Bible teaching and the Baptist’s thought he was too Pentecostal because of him believing in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. And he originally came out of the Four Square Pentecostal Church.. I’m sorry everyone but I’ve grew up and raised in the NonDenom of Calvary Chapel. I’ve been to Costa Mesa sat under Pastor Chuck when he was alive. My home church is still Calvary Chapel of Downey with Pastor Jeff Johnson. And I’m taking my grandparents to Calvary Old Path in Cypress with Pastor Bob. Great biblical teaching.

My husband and I are Southern Baptists, but we got married at a Calvary Chapel. I like how Calvary Chapels emphasize expository preaching through the Bible. We're from Southern California, and we always listened to KWVE, 107.9. That was mostly Calvary Chapel pastors preaching, and it was good teaching. Lots better than the air-headed so-called Christian stations that had bionically-illiterate DJs. Now we live in Arkansas. I miss KWVE.
I agree 100%. Calvary Chapel has always excelled in this area. I have learned so much through their radio ministry and David Guzik's commentary.

They used to be. We have visited several after moving back to Orange County . They are mostly 55 plus and very few people. We attended Calvary CM for years but unfortunately it’s no longer a place I’d go. They occasionally use the message Bible for one thing and allow women to preach from the pulpit on Sunday morning. I think it’s a failed attempt to get young people or be relevant. It is heartbreaking to see it go downhill. But the other smaller ones have stayed the course and do expository teaching.
@@flowerpower3618 the reason why is When Pastor Chuck passed in 2013, The son in law Brian Broderson took over as the lead pastor. Whom he wanted bring young people and change what was already working . And more of topical sermons. He stepped down of the head of the community of Calvary Chapel churches to launch Calvary Chapel Global Network. My pastor from Calvary Downey Jeff Johnson was part of the community network of churches for Calvary ( still is ) and a number of Calvary didn’t want to be part of the Broderson’s Global network. Some Calvary Chapel’s because of this mess changed their names or like Calvary Chapel of Cypress changed their name to Calvary Old Path. Because they want to keep what was taught by Pastor Chuck to Pastor Jack Steven’s . When he 1st started that church. And now that Church is still thriving as a small Calvary with different title. But same Biblical teaching. Calvary Downey is still going strong. Puts out great teaching as well. It’s just CC Costa Mesa has not been thriving like they thought they were. And sounds like it’s become a shell of itself.

Good work. But I think Chuck Smith would cringe If he were alive hearing Calvary chapel called a denomination. He clearly states that they are not a denomination. Secondly you could mention that the Vineyard movement is a spin off or outgrowth of Calvary chapel

I agree. I went to Calvary Costa Mesa growing up and he had always said it was a non denominational church.
At some point, the Vineyard Churches were given an opportunity to weigh in on becoming a denomination vs. staying as a movement. They choose the latter. Not sure if it makes a difference in grand scheme of things.
Yes, I know Chuck Smith was well-known for saying that but Calvary Chapel is distinct enough and large enough to justly be called so. Even this video, with it’s few sets of checkboxes, shows that Calvary has several shared belief systems, otherwise we’d see a lot more “varied” markings. And there are so many other practices common amongst themselves that have made them someone distinctive from other non-denominational churches as well as from other denominations. Like, no Nativity scene to be displayed, no standing during worship, style of worship… so many that it’s just more of a cute quirk now to think CC as the non-denominational denomination.

Just make sure you find a community that agrees with YOU. No luck? Start your own. Martin Luther started the whole “church hopping” idea 1500 years after Jesus founded His ONE Church. There is no Denominationalism in the Bible.
@@patquint3291 Church is best when it is just people gathered together to learn and grow in Christ. In the Bible (NT), they met in homes of fellow believers. No tithing needed. No single person determining who is or isn’t a Christian. I abandoned organized religion after my son died. Still a believer in Jesus. I try to follow his two laws: love the Lord and love my neighbor.
@readytoharvest These are great! Do you have, or would you consider, making a video that shows the timeline of the different denominations and where they came from? I know that would be hairy, with groups like Pentecostals coming out of multiple denominations, but I think the flow and movement of God through denominations over time as different things are highlighted is such an interesting aspect of Gods continued revealing and growing of His church today.
The AoG I knew back in the 1990's was more authoritarian. The NW Regional Office tried to demand; how much money was sent to them, wanted to pre-approve all speakers, and pre-approve all sermons.
This latest power grab resulted in our entire congregation leaving the AoG. I don't know how others dealt with it.
I learned a lot from that horrible experience. 😕
I am sure that there may still be some churches that are that way but at least on the west coast, it is much more relaxed. in the 90's I was expected to wear a suit because I was on staff but I have not had to wear a suit in the last 25 years or more. I can't remember the las time I needed to wear a suit, in some places especially back east, formal clothing is much more the norm.
I think maybe that was something that happened a long time ago. I have never experienced that.
These denomination comparison videos are great. Would you consider doing an in-depth Catholic vs Orthodox denomination comparison? I feel like they both share a lot in terms of theology and tradition, but that their differences in these topics may be interesting to highlight.

Would you include Lefebrists and Sedevacantists as Catholic? Some Catholics do an official sanctification to Mary and require her intercession to be saved, some are Christ centered.
As to the Orthodox, even explaining what Hesychasm is would require more time than these videos allow and many differences are due to the politics of the Roman pope claiming universal authority instead of theological differences.
@@Klein-Morretti - It would be interesting if he took a shot at it. I would certainly watch it . I agree that a comprehensive description and comparison would be really, really, really long, but he could stick to the main points of difference and keep the video at a watchable length.
We need a baseline introduction to the RCC first. That's probably a multi-video project.
You would have to include Byzantine Rite. It maintains certain Orthodox characteristics, but is in league with the Roman Catholic Church.
Then with Orthodox, which ones do you show? Oriental, Greek, Russian, etc?
Those ones are larger ones, but with Russian, there's the whole thing of the split with Old Believers.
The Vineyard is on a fast track to a more liberal position. The Arvada Vineyard here in Denver has done questionable things during a couple visits. 1. During baby dedication they allowed 2 men - same sex union - to PUBLICLY dedicate the baby.
2. Last month during a marriage conference they showed a short video, again- same sex couple as the center piece of part of a conversation. Jay the lead pastor wrote some position papers on his view of human sexuality. Anaheim Vineyard shortly thereafter broke with the fellowship they started. Sad but true.

I can tell you---Messianic Jewish congregations are as varied as the different protestant denominations. You've got Charismatic Messianic Jews and Evangelical Messianic Jews. I've seen some that are as wild as a Church of God In Christ, with people bouncing off the chandeliers, and then some that are as intellectually concentrated and orderly as a Baptist, Calvary Chapel or a Nazarene church

Very few Calvary pastors teach Conditional security and few are Calvinist. Most follow what 1John makes clear in that IF THEY WERE OF US THEY WOULD NOT HAVE LEFT. This was one of many AG teachings that Chuck Smith departed from after teaching through the Bible several times.
very nicely organized vid. There are a couple of things that I'd like to comment on: 1). The AG does not allow a divorced person to be initially ordained to ministry... period. Not sure what happens when divorce happens after a pastor has been ordained. 2) The AG has a two page list of doctrines that an ordained person must agree with 100%. Any of the boxes on the two page annual re-licensing form that are not checked as to agreement means the ordination/license cannot be renewed. One of these boxes is regarding "the initial physical evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues". Don't check the box? License not renewed.
*edit*. oops, I see the AG changed it's requirement for ordination to now allow a person divorced before conversion to be ordained. It looks though that a Christian who has been divorced is not qualified to be ordained.
My dad was an AG preacher and they did allow him to continue after the divorce and remarriage. However, I believe he had to prove that my mother was unfaithful.
All three denominations, I think, are a "happy medium" between the Baptists and the "Charismania" pew jumping churches that were too wild for me. These are the kind of churches I've been looking for a long time. I think I will check them out
I have nothing but the most blessed memories of the Assemblies of God in the 50’s; it was truly a denomination balanced between solid Biblical teaching and power of the Holy Spirit., Fanaticism was NOT allowed.
We were invaded by the prosperity doctrine, signs and wonders seekers, rock music, false personalized prophets and “love boat” mentality. The Assemblies of God have not been the same since.🥲
Calvary chapels tend to be Pastor led with no elders. (atleast the ones if have attended) they also deemphasize "the gifts of the body" which makes it seem flat (bible only) lends itself toward passivity. i dont care for the flatness of "bible only " churches because they are cranial and not experiential as in manifesting love and gifts and finding your purpose.
I have been mostly at Assemblies of God,very orderly,very well balanced,can,at times be business like but is very focused on worldwide missions,always give Biblical reasons for every move,speaks out on topics,typically have ministries for most types,I love my church!!!
Thanks for the information. I would recommend all three denominations as evangelical. I have heard that some of the Vineyard churches support the NAR and other aberrant teachings. I would suggest that people stay away from them.

Yeah, I prefer just a simple wholesome songs and good expository preaching. 1hr to an 1 1/2 service. Spiritual growth and Gods kingdoms happen when God is directly involved. You can't force spirituality nor growth.

I had no idea until researching after watching this that the AG had allowed female lead pastors 😮 I thought it wasn't allowed. The AG church I grew up in could never.
Allowed but not preferred.
There is no such thing as a woman applying for a pastoral position when men are available.
I do know, however, of a woman who was asked to take her husband’s place, after his passing and years of faithful service.
This proposal was prayerfully considered by the district and national offices and approved and endorsed; she went on to have a blessed ministry, loved and supported by all concerned.
In calvary Chapel, once saved always saved if you are saved in the first place.
The work you're doing is fantastic! You are making it easy to understand the differences which in turn makes it easy to "shop" for a church.
This may seem cheesy but I liken it to going to a Vegas style buffet...first, determine what beliefs you hold to be true and then find the church that teaches these beliefs. Simple as that.
Jesus founded ONE Church. No need to “shop.” Before he died and was judged by God, Martin Luther regretted his invented theology of sola scriptura , which started this whole Denominationalism thing.

When I was a kid I went to a church called Calvary temple. Do you think it’s related to Calvary chapel? I was young but I remember they sometimes spoke tongues but it was very rare and only when things got really wild and intense from the singing and stuff. It wasn’t a mega church but was pretty big and had maybe 100 or so people give or take on every Sunday. Do you think it was an offshoot of Calvary chapel?
I doubt it was associated. "Calvary" is a common word to be in the name of churches from other denominations as well. There are other churches around today with the name "Calvary Temple" and many are nondenominational Pentecostal.

Why did you choose to compare AG and Calvary and vineyard? I understand the Calvary and vineyard comparison because of Chuck smith and Lonnie but why the Assembly of God?
A lot of Pentecostals such as AG are interested in these charismatic denominations and including AG lets them see where they differ and are the same.
How do all these denominations weigh in on divorce and remarriage?
The gift of prophecy in calvary chapel is telling the future as written in the Bible like in Revelation and Matthew 24.

I would invite you to consider the Nicene Creed recited in every Catholic Church every Sunday and investigate true Christianity using the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994). It is so disappointing reading through the comments and seeing all these Christians attacking each other's beliefs. Agree on the majors, discuss the minors. But don't say if you don't agree with my doctrine, you are a false church. That is a lie.

God used Christians in the Assemblies of God to lead me to Christ and raise me up in the Lord. I still attend after 35 years however I am aware of how they lean on church tradition in some cases instead of pure bible doctrine. I had to get outside my church and learn from apologist, scholars, academics, and great bible teachers of other traditions just to discover and sort out false teachings from what God would have us believe and practice under the New Covenant and Good Bible doctrine. You most likely need to do the same. Remember the Bereans.
They can be a little bit on the business side.An example that isn't Biblical in their bylaws is a Pastor is supposed to be at one church about 4 years then move on but my Pastor has been there 25 years but they will say God lead me when it was in their bylaws.
@@t-squared6406 Yes, I personally like the same pastor for his entire life. Don't like change and that includes members just picking up and leaving. Turn over rates are appalling in some churches. I think some churches turn over it about 50% of the congregation every year. I don't like it but then again its the Lords church. I think people should stay where there at. Unless something major happens.

The Vineyard seems to have changed a bit since John Wimber passed to glory. You are not quite describing the early Vineyard Movement.

I belong to the Church of God the oldest Pentecostal church in the USA. Our teachings are similar to the AOG, other than holding to the doctrine of sanctification as a separate act. However? I know of no one who preaches that any more, and probably most would could concede (including me) they do not agree with it.
Sanctification is taught by the Wesleyans, and the Church of the Nazarene.

Great question. The answer is quite simple, and its based on different uses of metaphor and hyperbole and is understandable when we consider the context and the point the different authors are making. Just like the same babe can be cool and hot, it is understanding what each refers to when we come across what is seemingly a contradiction.
In the passages that describe God as light, and being a light, or Him being a light unto our path, etc. this metaphorically refers to illumination and seeing things clearly, knowing all, and revealing things that we don't see at night. Imagine a pre-electric culture that only uses fire--the night skies would be amazing--but daily life needed to take place during the daylight. Light brings warmth, growth, etc - which was also the basis for the worship of the sun in the ancient near east. Many of the references in scripture are theological affronts to the beliefs of other nations back then, so that is to be considered as well. As far as references to God is light and in Him is no darkness, this is also basic - considering the moral usages of the term for darkness being evil, and light being goodness. Finally, when there are anthropomorphic terms that refer to appendages, human actions, ideas of "where someone lives"--in the case of God, they aren't literal. Most confusion while reading ancient books like the books of the Bible come from taking literal things metaphorically, and vice verse. This also accounts for many doctrines in the different denominations that this channel describes.
As for darkness, the passages that describe God being surrounded by darkness or dark clouds, this is referring to Him "hiding" which of course, is also metaphor, as He isnt really playing hide and seek. This is about our inability to really "see" (understand, comprehend--and perhaps sometimes visually) Him, its referencing the aspect of Him that is mysterious and covered. This idea also shouldn't be taken with any extreme ideas, because over and over He invites us to seek Him, and we see that He is pursuing us as well.
Though many don't think so, the Bible actually does have a lot that is based on ancient concepts and using ancient literary techniques that don't come naturally if we read from our 21st century mindset. The basics are very clear, but sometimes, as with the question you asked, we just need to understand what the original writers intended, and what it meant to the original audience. The Bible isn't an encyclopedia or a fortune cookie where it is made of unrelated sentences compiled (though some poetry and wisdom books like Psalms or Proverbs contain sections like that) so its important to not only understand the cultural context of any passage but also the context of it in relation to the book that was being written. ALL CHURCHES ARE INDIVIDUALLY RUN. therefore you cannot categorize and condemn any fellowship in this video. that does not mean they may not have problems like all churches. the problem with discernment videos is people tend to want to be "Right" and "smart" instead of in process with the Holy Spirit in humility and extending truth and grace faithfully in relationships. Jesus’s One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, commonly called the Catholic Church is the only true ONE Church. There is no Denominationalism in the Bible.
As long as there is agreement on the major doctrine of Christ, the minor issues are just another flavor.

I've grown up in calvary chapels and have never seen a Charismatic calvary. 🤔
They are all charismatic, which means that they believe that miraculous gifts like speaking in tongues is something that continues to the present. There are no Calvary Chapel churches that are not charismatic. A common misconception is that "charismatic" means that people speak in tongues or do other spiritual gift manifestations during worship, which is not the true definition.
Somebody is wrong the bible says that there is on church established by Christ with His blood. Matt. 16:18, Acts 20:28 established in AD 33 in Jerruslum . None of churches belongs to Christ and are man made teaching for doctrine the commandments of. Men. Matt 15:9

I go to Calvary Chapel and the majority of what he said is correct with the exception of everyone in Calvary Chapel believing that you can lose your salvation. Nothing or no one can snatch you out of God's hand. If you choose to walk away from the church then some of us believe you were never truly saved at all. Once you truly give your life to Christ there is no going back.

I realize that in many ways the Assemblies of God functions as a denomination but they reject that idea altogether, They consider themselves to be a fellowship of churches, (cooperative fellowship). It is divided into two categories, Sovereign churches nationally affiliated and district affiliated that are over seen by a typically state wide board of Elders that provide oversight, The 16 fundamentals are the basis of the fellowship and although they maybe some variance doctrinally speaking but it is small. Each year when my credentials are renewed I must continue to agree with and teach those fundamentals.
It is not correct to say they reject that idea altogether. In fact just the ag.org homepage says they are a denomination. "There are more than 69 million Assemblies of God members worldwide, making the Assemblies of God the world’s largest Pentecostal denomination." ag.org/
@@ReadyToHarvest I have had my credentials with AG for more than 30 years. And there maybe something that says that but I know from personal experience and from conversations with a number of the leadership both locally and Nationally that they are quick to tell you they are not a Denomination

Many in the AG do today accept the AG as being a denomination, enough so that even their US home page says that they are.

Sorry but all these and any other greco roman traditions of men groups are replacement theology.
Jesus founded one Church. St. Paul said to agree on everything. Jesus prayed that His followers be one. There is no Denominationalism in the Bible. All these traditions were founded by men (and women) on their private revelation and private interpretations on what the words of Scripture mean.

I hate to say this but in the last thirty years without looking and realizing they've become pretty much corporate denominationalized and parochial.
They've allowed for a soft Baptistzation cessationist model along with a pretty mainstream Baptist institutionalization to creep in as opposed to the nondenominational Independent Jesus Movement Revival Middle ground Pentecostalism charismatic renewal they were founded on.
Some of it regarding the need for discernment is understandable but in other areas, it's completely, intellectually dishonest.
