My theory to how Mario got a castle is simply that Peach was so happy to be back in her castle after being kidnapped that Mario was to be commended with his own estate complete with a castle of his own so the Mario Bros could live in better living conditions. This greatly upset Wario with extreme jealousy and he wanted the kind of glamorous lifestyle Mario had. So while Luigi was on vacation, Wario took over the castle single handedly while Mario was rescuing Daisy. Afterwards Mario learned a valuable lesson about accepting what you have and lived in a nice cozy house instead of a castle. By the time Luigi got back, he was confused but he did get a letter saying he won a free mansion. The rest is history.
Damn right. Daisy being in mainline games and promoted more is a no brainer. We need more of the core four Mario Luigi Peach Daisy! Buying it for this reason only
Super Mario Land 2 was the mario game I played the most as a kid, and it's definitely still one of my favourites. And yeah, when Wonder was announced, it immediately seemed to give off a similar energy, so it’s cool that I wasn't alone in thinking that. Also, I've never seen any of your videos before and this was top-notch!
Me it was DK 94, it just seemed so... high-fidelity for a handheld, it was pretty much an acrobatic platformer like Mario64. And I think the BEST application of teeny tiny mario sprite, just BEAUTIFUL realization of the limited graphics. This is so cathartic, to see these points stressed in a video that people actually published and other people saw. It's a bit surface-level to go on about stuff like Yokoi, but, it actually IS information and not misinformation. Always nice to see the value being put in.
I was hoping Bowser wasn’t going to be the villain in wonder. bowser is always going to be Maria’s main villain but it’s cool to shake it up every once in a while. I was hoping they would make a new villain or bring back wart or Tatanga. But at least they did something new with Bowser by having him literally be the castle

Super Mario Bros 2 takes place in Subcon, 3 in the wider “Mushroom World” with seven distinct Kingdoms with their own rulers separate from the Mushroom Kingdom, Super Mario Land in Sarasaland, Super Mario World in Dinosaur Land, Super Mario Land 2 in Mario Land, Yoshi’s Island in Dinosaur Land again, and then now we have Super Mario Bros Wonder in the Flower Kingdom

Then I feels like we will get a more conventional Mario platfromer with the next system, the true successor to the classic and new super Mario bros games. All foreground asset are now 3D and there is also improvement to the life and timer system.
One thing to note is how similar all the New Super Mario Bros games were from each other. There's quite a lot of variety in the Mario series, and Mario wonder is just a normal part of that, but only if you consider all 4 New Super Mario Bros to be the same game. And also Mario 3D Land is basically just a prototype for Mario 3D World too, and those games are basically 3D versions of the New Super Mario Bros. The real problem is that Nintendo has been stuck with that sub franchise for too long.
To me, Wonder feels like a bit of everything: it's got the enemy designs and behaviours of Mario Land, a moveset and badge gimmicks greatly inspired by Mario World and SMB2 (like the crouch jump and throwing stuff upwards), and the nuanced level design of the New Soup series, making you interact and engage with the level to find secrets rather than just hitting an invisible vine block and calling it a day. And I think that's what makes it so cool, this game has a lil something for all generations of 2D Mario fans, while also managing to largely do its own thing all at the same time.
Mario actually appears in Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land, he's in the ending, after defeating the final boss as wario was about to take the gigant peach statue, Mario flies in his plane, taking it back.
I poured an absurd amount of time into Super Mario Land 2 as a kid. Because of the sprite and sprawling worlds (sprawling for the time) it was the closest I could get to a portable Super Mario World until GBA came out haha

Miyamoto hasn't directed a Mario game since Super Mario 64 and has mostly been hands-off with Mario since the Wii era. Hell, in Super Mario Odyssey, he was credited as "Executive Producer," something only Nintendo presidents are ever credited as. "Executive Producer" basically means "uninvolved." He gave passive input, but has essentially relinquished all authority to Yoshiaki Koizumi and the EPD Tokyo team for the mainline Super Mario games. He's an advisor now, and he's almost completely uninvolved with all game development.
Visually, I always felt that the color scheme of "Fire Mario" and the feather on the hat in SML2 should've been recombined - Fire Mario would have that thing on his hat, despite the coloration of home console graphics.

I always saw Wonder as the new versin of Super Mario World.. stylized and a bit different. With me seeing New Super Mario as being an updated Super Mario, Super Mario U being the updated Mario 3.
Technically speaking, Super Mario World takes place in Dinosaur Land, not the Mushroom Kingdom, it changed the way that the two most iconic enemies, Goombas and Koopas, behaved, so much so for the Goombas that it turning into its own enemy(Galoomba). It also replaced the brick block with the rotating block, and added the spin jump, which you could use to break those blocks. All in all it was also a “very weird game” according to those standards, it’s also one of the most colorful Mario games, especially 2D ones, just like Wonder. So if anything. Super Mario Bros Wonder is actually Super Mario World 2. Or 3, I guess. Even the abbreviations are similar. SMW vs SMBW. It all seems to line up
Strictly speaking, every game of the classics has it's very own characteristics. Having a strictly "Mario Bros Style" came with the introduction of the NSMW series, which were copiing the SMB3 styled gameplay and generally stayed during the 4 titles.

We already know that Mario USA was meant to be the actual sequel as Miyamoto has said multiple times that he wanted Mario's sequel to involve vertical scrolling and its unfinished prototype was actually reskinned *into* Doki Doki Panic *for* the dream factory event, hence it had no run button as it was supposed to. The Gameboy essentially did have multiple generations within its own life cycle. Even putting aside the Gameboy color that is often considered a refresh and not actually a successor console (I disagree but Nintendo seems to think this), the Gameboy original was out for long enough that technology had the time to significantly advance during its lifespan so that better chips could be put into the game cartridges allowing developers to make higher quality games on the same console. This is why many games on the Gameboy feel like they belong to a different generation of console from earlier games on the console. Not to mention that the longer a console is out, the better developers get at developing on it anyway so that with a system that lasted as long and was as popular as the GB had plenty of time for game designers to master pushing it to the max even putting aside the moving bar on the technical limitations of the cartridge of the lifespan.

not only is mario wonder not marios first adventure outside of the mushroom kingdom because of super mario land, in mario galaxy mario visits MANY new worlds.
My take for years has been that a way to revitalize 2D Mario would be to say, return to Sarasaland with it’s different locales & weird enemies, hell maybe even bring back Tatanga as the antagonist so it’s not just Bowser again. Or Land-ify it by doing stronger themed worlds ala Mario Land 2, and while the environments themselves don’t scream anything too out of the norm, this is certainly a step in the right direction. Wonder at least has a mostly distinct visual style, enemies that go beyond the staple ones, and wacky power ups, so yeah I’m on board with a spiritual link to the Land games here. Fun way to look at it.
This might actually be New Super Mario World because in the original SMW, the adventure takes place in a place other than the Mushroom Kingdom, which is known as Dinosaur Land. Super Mario Bros Wonder takes place also in a not so distant land just beyond the Mushroom Kingdom, also known as the Flower Kingdom. This supports my point in that Mario Wonder is basically New Super Mario World.
There's actually a pretty good reason for why 1-ups aren't mushrooms here. 1-ups and super mushrooms are usually distinguished by color.. something the Gameboy famously didn't have lol. So instead they gave it a different but easy to understand shape

I wish people would stop with the Mario 2 shit, even as a joke. We already know that Mario USA was meant to be the actual sequel as Miyamoto has said multiple times that he wanted Mario's sequel to involve vertical scrolling and its unfinished prototype was actually reskinned *into* Doki Doki Panic *for* the dream factory event, hence it had no run button as it was supposed to.
Mario Lost Levels has also been stated in multiple interviews to be an alternate take on mario 1 and not canon

The Gameboy essentially did have multiple generations within its own life cycle. Even putting aside the Gameboy color that is often considered a refresh and not actually a successor console (I disagree but Nintendo seems to think this), the Gameboy original was out for long enough that technology had the time to significantly advance during its lifespan so that better chips could be put into the game cartridges allowing developers to make higher quality games on the same console. This is why many games on the Gameboy feel like they belong to a different generation of console from earlier games on the console. Not to mention that the longer a console is out, the better developers get at developing on it anyway so that with a system that lasted as long and was as popular as the GB had plenty of time for game designers to master pushing it to the max even putting aside the moving bar on the technical limitations of the cartridge of the lifespan.

not only is mario wonder not marios first adventure outside of the mushroom kingdom because of super mario land, in mario galaxy mario visits MANY new worlds.
My take for years has been that a way to revitalize 2D Mario would be to say, return to Sarasaland with it’s different locales & weird enemies, hell maybe even bring back Tatanga as the antagonist so it’s not just Bowser again. Or Land-ify it by doing stronger themed worlds ala Mario Land 2, and while the environments themselves don’t scream anything too out of the norm, this is certainly a step in the right direction. Wonder at least has a mostly distinct visual style, enemies that go beyond the staple ones, and wacky power ups, so yeah I’m on board with a spiritual link to the Land games here. Fun way to look at it.

This might actually be New Super Mario World because in the original SMW, the adventure takes place in a place other than the Mushroom Kingdom, which is known as Dinosaur Land. Super Mario Bros Wonder takes place also in a not so distant land just beyond the Mushroom Kingdom, also known as the Flower Kingdom. This supports my point in that Mario Wonder is basically New Super Mario World.

There's actually a pretty good reason for why 1-ups aren't mushrooms here. 1-ups and super mushrooms are usually distinguished by color.. something the Gameboy famously didn't have lol. So instead they gave it a different but easy to understand shape
