    Nice job Ian extending the DXCE for 80m. It worked really well for you. I also made contact with Emily a while after you did. What a great show they put on last night. Keep making the videos. I learn a lot from what you do. Thanks de Syd. EI3IEB

    fantastic video, i've got the 'expedition' in storage, hopefully when we come out of lockdown i'll get into Poole harbour with it with the IC-705 - only 5 or 10w there, so will be interesting to see what it can do. I'm amazed and how many contacts you got mobile (and slightly jealous of your comfy surroundings) :)

    as usual Ian another interesting video, i am thinking of treating myself to a dx epedition to start running /p (too much of a faff to keep up/down my dxc),some friends of mine have a static caravan right next to the sea overlooking the iom near sellafield, and the best thing is no mains electric just solar panels, i going to cheat though and do it from inside a warm static, should get out well from there right beside the sea beside the seaside, keep them coming Ian 73's Kevin

      ianxfs i wonder how it would work with the DXC mounted on the caravan A frame and earth bonded to the caravan chassis and no radials ? 🤔

    • @ianxfs
      @ianxfs  3 роки тому +1

      Adam AP I thought about that myself Adam. Not sure how it would fair off the ground, plus it would be super close to the aluminium caravan, so maybe not a good move? 🤔

      ianxfs i purchased a second hand FT991A two weeks ago encouraged by the success you’ve had with yours. Only 5 months old, really pleased. The radio is a great size, not as big as some of the larger HF radios, but bigger than the tiny HF mobile radios. I bet it’s perfect for use in your van. I wonder if it would load on 60m with the ATU ? 👍

      Adam AP Not sure Adam? Not tried 60....if you haven’t already, have a look around my channel as there’s some good HF DX vids on there and VHF/UHF contesting. Love my 991A 👍🏻

    Thanks for the upload Ian.
    Can I ask you a DXC question please? I tried to build mine recently and had a bit of a frustrating experience trying to tune it; but that's spilt milk under the bridge. How can I stop the spreaders twisting as I put the DXC up? I would like my elements to be perfectly straight from top to bottom.
    Thanks,

      Thanks John! Put a bit of tape around the joint the spreader sits on. The plate will then wedge down on it 👍🏻

      Richie Walker You should be able to google it and get to the main page (Log4OM2 is also called ..nextgen). You may get a firewall warning when it comes to the actual download. You need to open up and ignore the warning to proceed....assuming your on the pukka Log4OM page!

    I seem to find the swr is always lower when using low power and as the power increases so does the swr.

    • @ianxfs
      @ianxfs  3 роки тому

      Yes. Once on a frequency, I double-check and generally if near the band edges engage the tuner just to hit the sweet-spot 👍🏻Good point.

  • @ak2b
    @ak2b 3 роки тому +2

    You key your radio then tune around the band checking SWR????

    • @ianxfs
      @ianxfs  3 роки тому

      Yes Tom for this video. Fraction of a second on any one frequency at 5w and about 5 seconds overall across a whole band. Hardly contributing to QRM surely?!

    • @M0RMY
      @M0RMY 3 роки тому +4

      Wow Tom - how, pray, would you (or 99.9%) of all the other hams watching do it when portable? Stop being a keyboard warrior and get on the air and contribute.. 5W for a couple of seconds, to illustrate a point for our education and demonstration purposes? WTH is your point?

    • @ak2b
      @ak2b 3 роки тому

      My point? There are any. Number of ways to check SWR over a band of frequencies than throwing on an AM carrier and swishing your VFO. What’s worse is a new ham seeing this and thinking this is the way you do things. You can buy a cheap analyzer for less than $50. Short of this - listen on any frequency before you transmit - that’s a teaching moment!

    • @ak2b
      @ak2b 3 роки тому

      And, I do contribute. Tom ak2b

    • @ianxfs
      @ianxfs  3 роки тому +2

      Tom Hall Hi Tom, if I’d had my key with me, I would have keyed briefly on a selection of frequencies (again at a mere 5w) to check the antenna tune. Failing that and in the absence of an analyser (I borrow the club’s MFJ, a tool & method I have promoted many times on my channel), I’d whistle, again on a few select frequencies. In this specific scenario, I had neither the MFJ or wanting to whistle-up on a video. Hence, a quick whiz up/down a portion of the band with again 5w. We’re all entitled to our opinions, and in mine this was a very minor discretion and will have been noticed by no-one and similarly caused no distress or QRM as a result. Your comment is on record, so those wishing to invest in an antenna analyser can adopt such a method 👍🏻 73 Ian.
