    In this video we show you how a bike camper is built.
    The idea and the design is from Paul Elkins. the whole construction plan can be bought on his homepage elkinsdiy.com/.
    my last mobile home weighs 10 tons and is almost 9 meters long. I sold it because the big kids stopped coming. Florian and I are now building a bike camper. a micro camper which is very light and can be easily pulled by bicycle.
    The body is made of polypropylene hollow chamber plates. The material is easy to cut and fold.
    In this video we show you how the interior and the windows are built and how the journey starts with the bicycle camper. We spent two weeks on the road and experienced many beautiful moments. the camper is waterproof and the sleeping climate is very good. thanks to www.polyroly.ch for all trailer drawbar components. We drove many routes on natural roads and the material was heavily used. The weight of my trailer is over 60kg. The trailer of my son Florian is over 40kg fully loaded. My bike had a 500W engine. Florian has no engine and pulls his camper with pure muscular strength. bravo florian for the great performance! I am proud of you.

    This video inspired me to do it too. I even have a very concrete plan. I want to do an even better and lighter version. Currently I am looking into carbon fibre compounds as my building material. Frame and cover made from it with a strong aluminium axle (that I can also do myself as I work as a lathe operator). That way it should be extremely strong and light, hopefully strong enough to even withstand some harsher touring.

    • @DR-bp1yu
      @DR-bp1yu 4 роки тому

      Been considering carbon fiber myself. I hope you do build it and if you do, Please do share your progression with us. I myself have some ideas to improve the design but won't be able to do that for a while yet.

    It's a cool trailer and well made at that. With any camping trailer, I can't imagine towing it when the bike is fully loaded riding on a flat terrain let alone an incline. I would imagine an e-bike to be almost a necessity.

    I watched a video where some young kid built off Paul Elkins design but with his own added ideals too. One ideal he had original i liked, instead of using corrugated plastic for the floor he used lawn chair webbing. I think that is brilliant because it is lighter and stronger. But if you took a minute to rethink the design of the frame for doing the ideal of lawn chair webbing, you would realize you don't want a bar, or a beam in anywhere crossing the bed, which would leave your frame too weak and would never even have enough material to stay square. But that is where my own ideal comes in, you can still use webbing and have no cross braces in your back in the bed, by notching the beams that go across so that they are lower than the side beams. This way the frame is all still there, but eve better it is notched(stronger). And you don't need any foam or air mattress, means less weight again. If you can lay on that lawn chair webbing from head to toe and not be laying on any beams it will be like a cot, very comfortable.
    I recommended to notch the frame together, especially the angle beams that ultimately hook to the tow hitch, because that will add huge strength in keeping integrity of the frame. In layering them in that way and notching them into each other by 3/4" it will be like a wooden tank frame. But that is what it would need without any real sheathing applied n the floor, if we used lawn chair webbing for the bed part of the floor. But that is what i came up with in order to use the webbing and still have a awesome trailer, actually better i think. But you could still use the notch method and also use the cot ideal of no beams directly in your back in the bed, and still use corrugated plastic on the bed floor, it would work the same really, feel like a cot. But you can't have those beams in your back, they are notched and also mounted lower than the sides where the sheathing hooks. This design you can't rely on the sheathing used in this way to hold anything together because it is just in essence a cot. Because for a cot you only want the edges on any beams, but on a floor or to hold a frame together you need it on all the beams and screwed into all the beams. Either you can put more sheathing from the underside this way you can screw to all the beams, or you can notch the entire frame together in which i am doing, or both.
