There are 100s of Horseweed growing on the side of the Highway that I pass every day. I couldn't take it any more. During a low traffic part of the day, I pulled over and grabbed up a couple. Hense the abrupt and impromptu start to the video. Let me show you how I gather, process, dry, and try Horseweed Spindles and Fire Boards for Hand Drill Friction Fire. Kind of interesting also, I let the gentle breeze take the Loblolly Pine Needles tinder bundle to flames. Please follow the LINKs below and SUBSCRIBE. Thank You! That's awesome!! My girlfriend and I walked some train tracks next to the mall yesterday and collected some really good ones. Some were pretty thick. I'm hoping they shrink a little. I always used golden rod. So I'm pretty happy about finally finding the horseweed
Hey nicely done. Does Mullen make a good spindle? Have some in my back yard thinking of harvesting it. Thanks for all your videos and all the work you do to put them out for us.
Here we call this dog fennel and horse weed has long leaves with white blooms. My husky chainsaw needed a filter for the gas tank. It was $10? My old Poulan didn't even have one but it depends on the year. I took a piece of this dog fennel and made the poulan fuel tank air filter. Way cheaper than that husky stuff.
Good Afternoon Mr. West, I have inspired by your hand drill videos and am trying to learn this skill. Like all beginners at this skill, I am running into some problems and am trying to work through them. Your videos are helping guide me through many of these problems. Thank you. I noticed in this video you referenced a thumbnail test in mentioning your hearth board. Can you tell me what that means or where I can find out what that means? Any help would be greatly be appreciated. Thanks.
when can the horseweed, mullein, etc be harvested? only in fall when they naturally dried out or can i pick them in mid-summer and dry it out myself? eventually in both cases i end up with dry spindles, however, i'm not sure whether the time of harvest affects the quality and usability of the spindle.

You make it look easy! Thanks for the video! 👍
Great job, thanks
You give me some "new eyes" for things to look for! Appreciate you, David!
Thanks Tim. Heavy spalting many times indicates wood of the proper density for fire boards?
Thank you for the lesson. I need to find some stamina!! LOL God bless you
Don't we all?
Good video , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Thanks Michael!

Sometimes they'll shrink 25%. Thankfully these only shrunk 10% or there'd have been no video.
Horseweed is my favorite. Works very well on cedar. Cedar roof shakes are very handy, but hard to find these days
That's what I hear.
Theres tons of mullein and horse weed where I work. Very informative video. Just gotta find a good native wood to make a fire board out of.
Any wood that is dry and passes the thumbnail test... the wood will make an impression from thumbnail pressure. See my hand drill playlist.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl there's a lot of softer woods where I'm from. Mainly pine, spruce, cedar, and cottonwood. I'm sure one of those will work well.

Mullein is the best. See my hand drill playlist for those videos.

If you can press on the wood with your thumbnail and leave a mark, it's good for a hand drill fire board.
Thank you so much for your help.

When I harvest green and dry, I wait until the flower head goes to seed.
Will you tell why you put the blade under the ember before transferring it to the bird’s nest? Thanks.
I was scooping peripheral dust and dumping it onto the ember.
Always heard it called mares tail. Or is that a different weed?
Same.
