I've been incredibly impressed by the writing of secondary characters on The Last of Us (HBO), especially how they're written OUT of the show...Here's a breakdown of one of the more emotional scenes from the show so far.

Sam didnt write "im sorry" ellie did
correct. Ellie writes in all capitals, Sam writes in all lowercase.
still a good video and a great tv show though
she says sorry because she promised she’d stay up with him which obviously she didn’t 😢
@@jocquiwilliams7635 I interpreted it as she felt guilty bc she feels responsible for him and she failed him in the end.
@@peace4myheart Thats what i think, she said her blood was a cure which it wasnt
Yes, was about to comment separately. Of course Ellie wrote that, jeez.
After my dad watched episode 7 he was like "it was good I just wish we could go one episode without it ripping my heart out."
He's going to HATE the intro episodes of season 2 then. If you played the second game, you know what I mean.
@@tcrpgfan Second season is probably going to suck, seeing as they're going with the story of part 2.
@@rafox66 maybe the writers change it up a bit like in the first season. but i don't see them deviating much from the main plot points tbh.
Since you asked, honestly in terms of character differences between the show and game, the biggest difference is Joel and Ellie are more badass in the games. Which sorta makes sense because you have to kill hundreds of people during the story in the game. But I sorta like that they feel a lot more vunerable in the show.
I think this will end up mattering a lot in terms of how the story hits. Ben Corosshaw had this criticism. How can you be happy and satisfied with the "in the end they had peace" ending after you've seen them mow down not just a thousand infected but a few hundred living human beings of varying moral character to boot.
They feel more human to me.
In the games, I felt almost invincible as Joel and sometimes Ellie. In the show, they seem more realistically vulnerable.
Totally, Joel feels way more sad and worn down in the show. But I feel they're telegraphing Ellie's aggressive side from Part 2 more in the show.
i agree with the vulnerability. it's a nice touch and im enjoying Pedro's interpretation of Joel. I do think that the massive amounts of murder you commit in the game was done on purpose though and it's not really about invincibility to me. To me, game Joel and Ellie have to do heinous things to live and it comes back to bite them in the ass several times. We don't get that perspective in the show and that's perfectly cool. But they are two different characterizations of the same characters.
Ellie wrote "I'm Sorry" for failing to cure him. brutal... every episode so far has been that way.
Every time we meet a new character, I find myself being more jaded and less trusting. The show literally makes me think like Joel and Ellie. Brilliant
Quick note! Sorry all, I said Sam wrote the message at the end but as everyone pointed out, Ellie writes in capitals, while Sam writes lowercase, so it's a final message from her.
My bad - blame my shoddy handwriting forensics!
I was gonna tell you don’t read the comments.
Honestly, it's more heartbreaking if Sam did write it.
i thought sam wrote it too
Lmao and also blame your shit media literacy.
Damn, I thought Sam wrote it. In a weird way it makes me feel a little better, because children not knowing how to deal with more complex ideas/things really destroys me. However, from a story telling standpoint I wish Sam had wrote it
So refreshing watching an analysis from the perspective of someone who hasn't played/watched the video game, sometimes we are biased and ignored if other people are enjoying it
I think people who haven't played the games will enjoy it more. Gamers knew what was coming with Sam and Henry, Tess, David and James etc. That said, watching it as a gamer is fun as you compare and contrast characters, dialogue, etc so we get that advantage.
SPOILERS FOR EP. 6
one thing i didnt realize until i watched this video is how Ellie reacted to Sam asking if you would 'still be you inside", considering we now know her best friend/crush became a monster (and presumably ellie had to kill her or leave her for dead), we can see how Ellie is fighting the comfort-the-scared-child who still wants to be around or cope with her own survivors guilt or general guilt over killing her best friend
to add to this. there are many times in the game where you can hear infected saying "i dont wanna" as there attacking you
I loved the match cut with Ellie falling asleep in the car as well. Not just because its funny as shit but because it was used in the very first episode with Sarah falling asleep on Joels lap around 16 minutes into the show. How it is delivered is a little bit more subtle but still almost identical to the one wih Ellie and definitely no coincidence. The details with which the writers enhance the story and add underlying meaning is just so good with this show.
In the game there is the exact same match cut, I've always loved it
I didn’t even consider Sam wrote it. The funny thing is you almost can’t decide what’s more depressing and impactful if Sam or Ellie wrote it. That little Headcannon you can have is nice, ironically
I am so glad HBO added more story to Sam. It broke my heart completely but good at the same time
I'm seeing a lot of people saying that Ellie wrote the note at the end, not Sam. And while that is true, I'm deciding to believe that it was Sam, knowing that I'm 100% wrong. To me that's just so much more depressing.
lol damn
More about Ellie feeling she can save everyone. Survivor guilt.
That is exactly what flat earth people feels
Ellie saying she's sorry that she was wrong about her blood being a cure. She condemned him to die without getting to talk to his brother again. It represents her immense guilt. I think it fits perfectly being from Ellie.
I feel you. It's speculation. The rest of what Sam was trying to say would be "I'm sorry I left you more lonesome. I'm sorry I couldn't go with you." We all saw how devastated he was that this was the end. You finally find a friend at the end of the world and they're torn from you most cruelly. Poor Ellie.
Your video essay’s are so good! Short and to the point filled with great thoughts ❤
Actually, I think Ellie was just trying to comfort Sam because he’s a little kid-she’s seen how adults get when they know it’s all going to end and she doesn’t want an innocent child to go through any of that. So I think she’s trying to give him hope so that he doesn’t have to experience that despair before he… Goes. And maybe the morning after, seeing him still up have her some hope too. For a moment. And that’s why she approached him-I think she wanted to be right. She wanted to have her hope be true for once, because it so often isn’t in this story.
That’s my reading, anyway.
Ellie wrote "I'm Sorry" to Sam...
Welp, it’s been 2 weeks since that episode came out, but I suppose now’s as good a time as any to start sobbing uncontrollably like a baby again.
As a fan of the games I loved this analysis! Good luck avoiding spoilers, I can’t wait to hear your takes on the following seasons!
Great video, I love listening how people who are not familiar with the game appreciate the show
I loved the show so much I decided to play the game lol
@@lkctom2546 that's so cool! It's truly one of the best games I've ever played, hope you like it
@Catalina Martínez F. dude I loved it. My girlfriend and I played it together so it was just a 20/10 experience all around. I love being one of the annoying "that wasn't in the game" people 😂
Those videos are such a labour of love. From delightful puns and jokes to clever editing, carefully integrated clips to go along your narration, it's an endless source of pleasure.
This series is so satisfying so far. Quite clever at integrating the feeling of being in a videogame at specific moments, while making it a drama series as well.
I gotta be honest when Sam and Henry came on I just wanted them to be the main characters for the rest of the series. They were both so endearing 🥹
Yo I love the scriptwriting for this video essay! Keep it up!
Love your presentation style on this
Also just to say, it’s so interesting seeing someone making a video about the series without having any knowledge of the game. Like not in a bad way, just I know what’s gonna happen and stuff and I wonder what your reaction will be
I've never seen a more consistently devastating show. Strange, but almost every episode, I've oddly had something get stuck in my eye and had to wipe my face.
The game is just the same
I'm glad that you found this as devastating as I did. This episode completely gutted me and even after finishing the series was still the most impactful. It was such a cute and wholesome episode and I especially enjoyed Sam as a character, from the deaf representation to how strong and articulate he was as a young kid in this horrible world while still maintaining this childlike innocence. I wish they could have stuck around for longer (; - ;)
The Sam & Ellie story killed me in the videogame. The fact that I knew it was coming and it STILL had me sobbing like a baby for this show...wow.
Sam revealed his wound and then I started crying. And I didn't stop until way after the end credits.
I don't know how you do storytelling better than this.
Its interesting to see how someone who hasn’t played the game views the show. This gives me perspective on how everyone else is receiving the show.
Exactly my same thought.
Thanks for this. Keep em coming.
Great job! You got yourself a new sub
Quality content legend. Cheers heaps
I can confirm as someone who has played the game, the did a fantastic job with it all. It is one of the best tv shows I have watched.
I think the superhero mask drawn on Sam's face was another sad addition. Someone else online said he just wanted to be the hero, and ended up being the monster.
I listen to the podcasts for the show and I think Craig came up with the idea for Sam to be deaf in the show and neil went "damn why didn't I think of that" and they put in it the show. They wanted real representation while also wanting the show to be more quite for a bit because there was so much talking in the show already. they felt putting it in gave it more weight especially because they were hiding so not talking meant it was easier for them to hide. (last bit was what i interrupted but they basically thought it was fantastic idea and they put it in this show). I also highly recommend the podcast for fans of the game and show as they talk bout the small differences and details in the show
man the henry and sam storyline is so fucking sad but when the words "henry shoots henry" popped up I couldn't help but audibly exhale through my nose lmao
oh god this moment is gonna be impossible to not spoil or scream. i can't.
Great video my dude. Easy sub from me!
I think the thing that makes Last of Us so good is how CLOSE it is to the source material.
There's a reason video game movies never do well, the director doesn't give a shit about the game. The director uses the game and universe to sell their OWN vision instead of respecting the SOURCE material.
The Halo TV show's director said he never played the game, and doesn't want to tell a video game story leading to the shittiest shittywood rendition of halo I've ever seen.
The Last of Us is SOO good when staying close to the source material because, wow who would have guessed, video games can have GOOD WRITING.
I was listening to the video and not watching it - so I reminded to see what Sam wrote and now I'm curious as to what the last thing he wrote was
Great video regardless tho
8:57 They chose actors based on the vibe, not accuracy. good moves i say
Now I kind of wish it was Sam who wrote the note(I know it was Ellie). It would just have to read "If I turn into a monster...I'm sorry" with some messy handwriting to hint at him turning.
2:08 made me crack up
I thought Ellie wrote "I'm sorry" at the end
Disclaimer bread does not talk, all driving sequences are performed by professional drivers, and none of the tissue squeezed was actually harmed.
Ah ah ah… most devastating scene *yet*
Ellie wrote I’m sorry, not Sam
Ellie obviously wrote I’m sorry but it not only made me sad because I thought he would live even though I played the game, Sam is shown to be more vulnerable with his disability and age and Ellie really failed to stay awake for him and failed to save him
I wonder if other people will start this trend of one painful scene
Most devastating scene? Every episode is the most devastating scene 😅
The "final thing Sam wrote" is actually written by Ellie, apologizing for not being able to save him. Which is even more tragic.
Joel is a POS through and through. Even though he changes, he still sucks. But his choices makes sense so I can agree he is one of the best written characters.
The show is clearly establishing Ellie is developing survivor guilt.
About the ending of the video. Is it just me or was it not Sam who wrote the "I'm Sorry". It seams quite obviouse acording to me that it was Ellie that wrote it. Becouse of the fact that she feals like it was her fault for him turning. She did not come to thair aid fast enough under the car witch got him bit and her blood could not save him like she hoped it would. I don't understand why people think that it was sam that wrote it, I could be totaly wrong but that seams like the only logical explination to me
I can't wait for the eternal seething that will be season 2 for those that haven't played the games.
your voice 99% match Skill Up's voice
Was looking for this comment Jesus the voice is nearly identical
Wait, this is not the same guy?
I personally like the game scene better then in the show because in my opinion it was more emotional
You’ll care about the end game at the end 😌👌 trust
If Joel is the best written character ever on tv, then he's really just the 2nd best because Joel is basically Mando only written after. It's even the same actor.
oooh boy he is gonna love the end of the show haha
He sounds like skill up
okay your friends may have a point, Joel character is good character because he is flawed as a person and there is some morally grey area with him, idk if he is the best written but he is def my comfort character and he is close to my heart
This show is the next big "Walking Dead" or "Game of Thrones", no doubt!
NO ZOMBIES, ONLY INFECTED
"I've never played the game"
Good one Ralph.
You: "Unpacking The Last of Us' Most Devastating Scene"
Me: "Unpacking The Last of Us' Most Devastating Scene - so far" :P
The Last of Us Part 3: Return of Joel, the vegetable
henry shoots henry
The meat riding your friends are doing for Joel is crazy, “greatest fictional character ever”
Haha 100% agree. He’s fine, but it’s a ridiculous call
No Joel is amazing
@@bl5533 He's good, but not the greatest.
The casting is great. People were complaining about Bella Ramsey because she didn't look like Ellie (some seriously weird as potential-pedophiles were complaining she wasn't pretty enough to be Ellie... a 14 year old character!), but my god does she do Ellie perfectly. She's a fantastic actress and nails the role. Loved her as Lyanna Stark. Love her as Ellie. Everyone's been fantastic in the show so far.

Honestly after the flying miniwheel that plane wreckage is probably the least-well done effect of the series :|
As someone who has played the game multiple times…the show is better in my personal opinion (yes, I said it). Cause they were able to flesh out the backstory and the origins of the pandemic really well (while grounding it in actual real life science and realities such as climate change which makes it more terrifying), they were able to flesh out characters more - characters like Sarah and Sam and Henry (which made their deaths all that more gut wrenching) - the cinematography is amazing, and the writing is superb - especially moments like the long pause after Ellie’s scream of terror when Henry offs himself, its details like these, knowing when not to cut, that makes it that much more impactful.
And most importantly, since this is not a game, they made Joel and Ellie much more vulnerable (physically and emotionally), and it has done wonders. And I feel like Joel and Ellie in the show has much more character thanks to the aforementioned vulnerabilities. And ofc, they got their father-daughter relationship on point.
The season isn’t fully out so this is not true
ha-ha wait until you see the next episode....
HBO is television's A24.
Also play the game so you can see how fuckin awesome Bill is
Flesh out quickly? I'm sure they had some time to write it. And one had to think what if this was z movie
I'm not saying the show is perfect, but as far as video game adaptations go it's probably one of the only ones done right
Best fictional character? I like Joel as a character but your friends have never heard of Arthur Morgan
This is gonna age hilariously
huh?

Is this not skill up
Yup. The narrator sounds exactly like Ralph from Skill Up.
The series isn't done yet and you're labeling the most devastating scene?
Well, I could have called the video “Unpacking The Last of Us’ Most Devastating Scene After Episode 6 But There Might Be A More Devastating Scene Coming” - but that’s not quite as catchy is it?
Don’t you have another channel called Skill up where you review video games and you’ve played the last of us 1 and two?
Please someone UA-cam “skill up last of us” lol
bill and frank arent new characters lol
to someone who's never seen played the game, episode 3 was the first time i'd seen them.
04:06 Joel is actually the villain in this story, you just don't know it yet
bullshit
We wiill miss Joel!
Just here to comment that this video is 9 mins 11 seconds long.
The show feels too fast. The game had you spend MUCH more time with them.
Honestly, the most painful thing about this show is Bella Ramsey being in a scene. Everyone else is great and with the exception of episode 3 everything has been pretty faithful and great. I didn't hate episode 3 it just absolutely was not needed for the story.
No, it wasn't. But it did give depth to some characters which I think added to the story overall. Episode 7 wasn't also technically necessary, but it gave some insane depth
I appreciated episode three for what it was, and that’s a gay love story. Maybe that’s not necessarily for everyone, and I totally get that. But as a gay person, that’s the kind of representation I love to see. Bawled my eyes out.
@@matthewparsons9407 I've played the game 5 times and had to Google Bill... I even text a friend and asked if they remembered Bill and they said "idk doesn't sound familiar." So no it wasn't necessary to the story. If they wanted to make a TLoU universe show then it'd be perfect, but they advertised it as the Joel and Ellie story.
Joel aint the best fictional char wver written. If anyome thinks he is. They dont read books. Or play good games. Lmao. Hes a generic hero.
Name someone better
I'm only watching the first season as I'm expecting it to go full woke-tarded in the second season.
Do you ever look at the words you say and wonder how you got here? Like honestly dude, “woke-tarded?”
You unironically wrote that out and thought “yeah, this word is something I would say. This represents me adequately.” Holy shit.
