    Whilst some may complain about a lack of detail to the granular level, I find your reviews refreshing and easily digestable.
    Wishing you continued success.

    It's really a damn shame we don't get either of these wagons in the U.S., but I'm hoping tastes will change soon when the generation being shuttled around in their parents SUV's are old enough to drive and start having kids of their own. Just like my generation wants nothing to do with the mini-vans we rode in as kids of the 90's, I'm hoping today's middle schoolers will discover the coolness of the wagon..and hatchback car as well.

    Where would you place something like a Skoda Superb 206tsi in this pack? I feel like it might have slightly less class than the Passat but the feature set, even on the base model, is a cut above IMO. Whether they do a facelift with active driver display might bring it up to spec with the Passat. But in this segment I'd take the Superb for sure.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  7 років тому +5

      It's a good question Guy. I did consider adding the Superb to this comparison, but I decided to keep it as a simpler two-way test between two more recognised badges, 6 and Passat. Basically, the Superb is a great alternative to the VW if you want (a) to spend a little less and (b) even more room, because the Skoda is massive. Sure, it's not quite as refined as the Passat wagon but it's almost there. As you've pointed out, it's in small things like the Active Info Display that VW deliberately hold back from the Superb that keep the Passat out in front, and allow them to command a higher price for it.

    I own an "old" Subaru Outback 2.5 liter from 2008, despite the low performances of the 2.5 flat four, I am really happy with the car but after 250.000 km, it is time to look for something else. I am not a big fun of the last Outback, their look is a bit too much "SUV" and to have better performances the only choice is the 3.6 liter...which I guess is insane for maintenance costs. So I thought a recent Passat 2.0 TSI 4motion (second hand from 2017-2018) could be a good alternative to my old Subaru. A lot of space, comfort, 4wheel drive, plus performances and a decent style. What do you think? Has the car any problem? I find the mazda not bad as well but since both of them aren't real sport cars but family cars, I prefer to have load of space then a sport feel handling. Thanks for the review.

      This Mazda is the 6 GT petrol wagon ($43,990). For that price in Australia you can get a Passat 132TSI Comfortline wagon ($43,990), though it isn't as well equipped as the Mazda.

      Just compared European (Latvian) prices.
      Top spec Mazda wagon 2.5 192 HP is available for 34 410 €.
      Closest possible configuration for Passat is R line 1.8 TSI 180 HP DSG 7 (R18 rims) - 37 400 €.
      The most expensive Mazda version - 2.2 diesel 175 HP / AT / AWD - 41 000 €.
      Passat Variant R-Line Premium Edition 2.0 TDI SCR 4MOTION 190 HP DSG 7 with almost exactly the same options - 45 553 €.
      So, for similar configuration, the price difference is about 10% in favour of Mazda. Keeping in mind VW reliability issues, it should be opposite.
      I'm driving Subaru Outback now and looking for replacement options, currently Mazda seems to be the best choice.
      Thank you for your review.

      We're actually reviewing the Superb Sportline next week Johnathan, so you'll see our comments on that car soon. Superb is a great alternative to the Passat if you're looking to spend a little less and need even more space - however it's not quite as upmarket inside as the VW.

    Which is 'better', not which is 'best'! (of two) Putting that pet gripe aside, I've just sold a 6 and bought a Passat. The latter is definitely quieter and on a long run, more comfortable. You don't get as many bells & whistles on the VW as standard but I prefer the refinement and sense of quality that it has. The 6 was disappointingly thirsty for a diesel and in the end I went for petrol in the Passat. One other factor is that as you get older and less flexible, the VW is easier to get into and out of! The 6 feels a good bit lower and IMO looks better than the Passat but the 6's tailgate aperture isn't as accommodating for transporting large items.

    Ill be looking at medium-large wagon and sedans before I consider an SUV, many of which are just jacked up hatches of various size. I think wagons are still the best for families especially when you hit the highway to cover 1,500kms. Which for me mean to Darwin or to Adelaide as the close major cities. Or the 2,000kms trip to Townsville I did in July in what is one of my current cars, a Mitsubishi 380 SX.
    The VF Commodore has about 2,000 litres with the seats down which is awesome but I'm unsure what will comes of the new 'Dore after the purchase of Opel by PSV....
    It would be neat to have an Optima wagon in Oz. But hey, both the 6 and Passat are good family and highway haulers.
    And then there are sedans......

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  6 років тому

      Agreed. I also find wagons more relaxing (and ultimately more stable) for long-distance cruising. After PSA kill the Insignia in a few years that'll be it for the New Commodore. I doubt there will be a Commodore-sized wagon from Holden after that point because the only wagon on the US market is Buick's version of the Commodore Tourer, which will also die off once PSA flick the switch.
      Good thing Mazda, Volkswagen, Skoda and the premium brands are still fairly committed to us wagons fans.

      Chasing Cars PSV...PSA...I may have mixed up with a football (soccer) team.
      Are yes, Skoda. I think the Skoda Superb has to one of the best things going. I know two people who have Skodas and swear by them. I little more expensive in servicing but very reliable and incredible space in the Superb.

    I live in the US, I wish the market hadn’t excommunicated larger wagons. I grew up with wagons in the 90’s (both wagons we had were from the 80’s) and I’ve always preferred their set up. My whole family is on the taller side and today’s SUV/CUV’s just don’t have decent legroom/cargo unless you get some behemoth vehicle all to offer that pedestaled high seating position. Sedan (or saloon) based wagons have a MUCH better driving experience, are more aerodynamic, and offer more space! I fault American buyer tastes which, for some reason, prefer to have their legs squished so that can sit high up and lean into their window when they take a corner. Seeing these two wagons makes me want to sneak one back to the States, if only it were possible 😢.

  • @PeterJUren

    You didn't make any mention of the 6 speed auto vs the 7 speed DSG which always breaks down, or any mention of the fact that all the extras in the VW add heaps to the price.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  7 років тому +7

      +Peter J. Uren Thanks for adding that. The 6A in the Mazda is pretty flawless. However, the Passat's DSG feels great - these gearboxes have come along way. Both the Passat 140TDI and 206TSI have a wet clutch DSG which isn't problematic, while the dry clutch unit in the 132TSI is a new gearbox that seems so far to be free of the foibles of previous iterations.
      As for options, the Passat you see here has no options apart from metallic paint. At least in Australia, standard kit is generous. In particular, the Passat has more safety kit for less money.

    • @Olliebobalong
      @Olliebobalong 7 років тому +4

      There was one problem regarding oil in the 7 speed DSG, and the wet clutch DSG's had problems when they first came out ..... 14 years ago now. Move on. Double clutch gearboxes are by design more durable than conventional autos as they are more akin to manual transmissions.

      +Mr. Mazda It would be interesting if they tried it. Australia is experiencing something of a wagon comeback, so perhaps the US will too at some point. Alternatively, perhaps wagon-based crossovers are a happy midpoint, like Volkswagen's Alltracks or the Subaru Outback.

    Mazda sounds impressive with the diesel. Boot is smallish for such a large car, though. I think the Skoda Fabia wagon is almost bigger. Also the bonnet is so long it looks like it could have a V10 under there. A bit too much style of substance perhaps. Agree the Passat can look a bit bland, especially in base trim. I'd go Passat because it's so much more practical and refined. Also really enjoy the new DSG gearboxes.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  6 років тому

      That's a good summary. Although the Mazda 6 is a stylish piece of kit (especially in high-spec trim) the Passat just nails the brief better, mostly because of the massive amount of space for people and cargo. And while it's conservative, the Passat is quietly attractive.

    What is Mazda's problem with NVH? People have been screaming at them for decades about this problem which continuously holds them back in the premium market. For F##k sakes Mazda can you fix this already already?

    • @Guvb235
      @Guvb235 7 років тому +2

      Mazda are not a premium brand, they are not BMW, Mercedes or Lexus etc and their NVH levels are far superior in their all new products - the new CX-9 and CX-5 are vastly improved, and genuinely both are the quietest in their class. The 6 is the next Mazda product in line for a generational change (due within the next year) and it's expected to adopt the same NVH changes as its newer brothers - might I add as well, the 6 facelift (not an all-new model) is far quieter and more premium than when this generation 6 was launched.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  7 років тому +1

      I tend to agree, Jake, although I think Mazda have the *potential* to command a Volkswagen-style premium (10-20% more expensive than mainstream brands), and they will realise that potential if the refinements to NVH and interior fitout continue.
