This was great.....Thank you.....I spent all day trying to learn how to use the printed interfacing......this has really help....so tomorrow I am going to try it.....wish me luck.....
If anyone still watches this - the pattern is still carried- the company sent the wrong pattern - but it’s ok - they are letting me keep the wrong pattern and are sending the correct one AND gave a free sample with it!! How awesome! I can’t wait to make this for my son’s wedding!!
Thanks Rob - got this product and some Cherrywood fabrics to make, but found directions daunting, thank you so much for the video explaining the steps, love your tutorials!!!
I made this in my very first quilt class I ever took about 10 or 12 yrs ago. I really is very easy to do. I and also just matched the colors from the pattern cover. When I am learning a new technique I find not having to think about colors is one less thing to think about. And one of these days I will finish quilting it, lol. Only about 1/4 left to do.
I've always loved the mariner's compass -- maybe this will be incentive to tackle it, finally. Thank you for this and all of your tutorials. I enjoy the non-quilting ones too!
I call it foundation piecing because paper piecing means something different where I am, but I certainly share your sentiment. I like the fact it is see through but it feels like the ironing all the time adds an unnecessary step. Probably more of a beginner level way of introducing someone to this method.
This is soooo very cool. I'm redoing my master bedroom in nautical. I think I can do this in blues, golds, and deep reds and maybe some white. This product makes the pattern not so intimidating. Thanks.
@Joanne Holzen how did it turn out? I'm about to start mine and its in blues, grays/silver, and white. My life partner likes simple color schemes so I left out other colors for now. I'd love to see a picture of how yours turned out (can we do that here?)
I can see how intimidating this pattern could be with all of those curves and bias edges, what a neat product! Does the interfacing start to lose it's stickiness after a few passes with the iron?
I made this several years ago but if I remember correctly there is no stickiness to the interfacing, in other words it's not a fusible type it's more like foundation so you can follow the lines. Hope this helps.
Edrie Cross I was thinking the same thing regarding an applique/travel irons! If he ironed on the other side, he'd have to have a pressing cloth so it wouldn't mess up the interfacing.
Rob is showing one way to accomplish the bonding process - with a full sized iron. Lots of folks only have a full sized iron, so it makes sense he would show us that method. If you want to use a different iron, go for it! There are many ways to accomplish the same goal. Instructors can't show us all of them, but we can use our own creativity and preferences to get it done in ways that work for us.
I am so disappointed that you didn't say anything about the background fabric. I made this Mariners Compass the year it came out but had a hard time figuring out what to do with it once it was done. I just could not find a complementary background fabric.
Why do you appliqué the centre wedges?? Why couldn't you attach them by sewing them together. ?? Would give a better clean finish seeing as though the red and purple and the other pieces were attach by sewing them together and not by appliqué.
I have made this quilt a number of years ago and it was so easy! I did it the way Rob did...one whole panel first, then all the other panels at the same time. Try it! I think you'll love it and be hooked. :-)
I did it!!! The Mariners Compass has long been my white whale! Too much fun!
Thank you Rob you always come to my rescue. May God Bless you. Keep your tutorials coming

@BrendaAnnNickerson, how did it turn out?

Wow! That makes a difficult pattern easy. Thank you Rob for a great video!
It’s paper piecing with interfacing! How cool!
Ditto

Thanks Rob! great job! I love foundation piecing, and this just makes it easier that there is stability and nothing to remove later. :)
You make this look so easy. Great job🎉🎉🎉
Just what I was looking for..my son wants one and this is perfect!!
Much better than paper pieces!!!!
Wish I had a beach to go to! 😎🏄♀️
Rob as usual this is brilliant
Thanks for the nuggets of info for those new to sewing. Nice project!
This is awesome...I love it. Thanks Rob
This is great Rob! I just love your videos. Makes me want to try it
I love your tutorials.
Thank you, rob.
Thank you so much! The facing had me very confused and you explained it well!
Great instructions, terrific product. Thank you.

got that interfacing and it confused me, thanks for clarifying. I have some Cherrywood fabrics to use for it, hoping to begin project soon.

Wouldn’t it be easier to use a travel iron or a sealing iron? What about pressing from the interfacing side instead of the fabric side??

You make this project look like something a confident beginner would love to do😊❤️ Thanks Rob a must do place on my To Do List😍
What I being looking for, trying to make a quilt for a sisters daughters first child who is planed to be born in oct 2018. Thank You so much.
So they also do a Double Wedding Ring pattern, please Rob....... I have always wanted to do one, you might be my inspiration to finally do it.
I always enjoy your videos. About how long did it take to complete this project?
I think is the same way that Jean Truelove made a Lone Star quilt.
Where do get patterns
dO YOU HAVE THE SUPPLIES FOR THE MARINERS COMPass?
Hi I click on the mariners compass to buy and it won't let me. Where do I buy the pattern? Thank you

i HAVE TRIED TO FIND THE PATTERN AND BOOK BUT YOU DON'T SEEM TO HAVE IT?
Why is MSQ Co publishing videos with links to products that aren’t available? This is the second time in the past week or so that this has happened.
always wondered how quiltsmart worked. thx!
Why do you appliqué the centre wedges?? Why couldn't you attach them by sewing them together. ?? Would give a better clean finish seeing as though the red and purple and the other pieces were attach by sewing them together and not by appliqué.
Because that is the way the pattern said to do it. I made this a number of years ago.
There are many ways to accomplish the same goal. If you prefer to sew yours on, go for it! If some prefer to applique it on, that's okay too. :)
I'm bummed. I can't do that. I can barely fix my youngests baby blanket.
