5:00 our city opened up our local expo center when COVID hit to the homeless in the area. it took them only about a year to destroy the interior so much (through graffiti, vandalism, literally ripping wires, metal, and pipes off of any source the possibly could, and certain spots of the building were so contaminated from drugs like meth spilling on the floors) that they literally had to tear down the entire structure down to it's support and rebuild it basically from scratch afterwards. Having a place where they were constantly watched emboldened them to OD because someone would be there to apply medicine, actually endangering them.
Even on the less extreme side of just letting people into places (That was constantly supervised also), you have "legitimate" renters who, even if they don't have financial issues, just will NEVER care about a building they're living in if they don't own it. They'll tear down walls, punch holes in them, destroy flooring and pavement, completely repaint walls without asking the owner for permission, and then just leave all the damage for the owner to fix while the rent they paid would never fix the amount of damage they made.
houses being an investment is the problem, it isn't that these people who own the houses and won't do anything with them. If these buildings wouldn't grow in prices for no reason, people wouldn't just sit on them for decades. It would also make housing more affordable if the sellers didn't constantly try to out-price the house more than they bought it for, or force people to sell it at a certain price because "if you sell it for less, that'd decrease the price of the houses nearby|

I would say (going off the top of my head and from what I've seen with my own eyes) that roughly half of those empty homes are not fit for human habitation, and 25% of the other half are just barely passable. And most of the ones that are habitable are priced way out of the price range for those people living paycheck to paycheck.
So, yes, there are more empty homes than there are homeless people, but they are either not fit to live in or cost way more than they should.

There is definitely more than 500K homeless people in America. I wouldn't believe for a second it's under 2 million. 5 million if we're including people who sleep in their cars or have to crash at friends or strangers homes.
That being said I still find it weird how people think giving homeless people homes somehow doesn't fix the homeless part.
They probably need mental help first, not the students etc. But the people who live in the streets due to drugs, mental health etc, or they just end up on the streets again

It's true that we didn't have a lush Forest to play in back when I was growing up but we didn't have natural disasters happening on every 5 Seconds it seems like and people are much more relaxed about letting the kids play outside because they were less afraid of the kids being snatched up by a predator. Even though we had video games when I was growing up as well, we still played outside in the street all the time because we didn't have parks nearby. It was very common to hear a kid shout out car to let all the other kids know that there was a car coming and to get off the road. Same neighborhood, same it is far, far less than we did Growing up. The woman whose bank said she couldn't afford a $950 mortgage didn't factor in all the other expenses that go on top of that mortgage: Taxes and insurance could easily add up to the monthly cost of more than the $1400 she's currently paying in rent, plus regular maintenance and repairs to keep the home in good condition (in case the bank has to foreclose.)
